2010 UCLA Student Orientation

ah, i’m from fresno too!
thanks for all the info! it definitely is helping me prepare. i heard that carpe noctum is a lot of fun, so i’m excited for that!

Yah you can skip most of the workshops. They are specific to majors and other programs. Most people go to one or two total for the whole time and the rest is free time.

Orientation counselors and department counselors will give you a ton if information on everything to graduate and what classes to take (GEs, upper division, prep courses for upper division, etc.). You will learn a ton about college at orientation.

And carpe noctum is a lot of fun, but a ton of running. You will be out of breath for pretty much the whole hour or so running up and down hills.

If we plan to change our major, how does that work out at orientation?

@Alex, your OC will file a change of major request for you, they followed up with my roomie the next day.

@Destiny: It’s fine to skip the workshops, you’re kind of just on your own. And I also got a double room as did most of the people in my group. I also didn’t take the MDT because I’m a poli sci major and it’s not required.

Does anyone know if the john wooden center is open during orientation?

@live, So would I be in an orientation group with the original major I chose, or would I be moved to a group of my new major?

So who’s in session 106? :)

@blabla I am :)

did you bring your laptop ? Was it necessary to bring the laptop to choose your courses? or when OC helped you to choose, he/she got a computer? Thanks!

^ if you bring it, you can check our courses on the second night on your own, but I believe that when you actually enroll in courses on the third day, you have to do it on ur OC’s desktop.

@Alex, you would be in a group with the original major you chose, I’m sorry! But from experience, it’s comfortable to be around others in your major, but it wasn’t really helpful. You’ll be okay (:

I just checked the orientation website again, so we’re supposed to be dropped off at parking lot 3 and a shuttle takes us to Rieber Hall? What time do the shuttles start running, I may be arriving early, perhaps around 6:30 or 7.

Everyone needs to chill out… It’s meant to be a fun time together and stuff.

@Alex I don’t know if the shuttles will be there, but I’m fairly certain that they should start around 7 o’clock at least you know… If you get there that early, just have your parents drop you off near Reiber Vista or somewhere near so you can walk over there. Pick up your Dorm Room Card in front of Reiber Vista and make your way over to covel commons and get your stuff (booklets and a backpack to carry stuff will be provided here). This is where you find out who your OC is… and you’ll just turn and look for them. This will take a while… so spend your time wisely and visit other places… maybe go to a cafe if your early or something.

Could someone tell us what we should bring for orientation? just one final check…

@ Blablaboi1

Bring all of the following:

  1. Clothes (Mostly shorts and shirts, but one sweatshirt and one pair of pants)
  2. Towel (To shower)
3 Toothbrush (to brush your ass, nah jk lol teeth)
  3. Toothpaste (I forgot this but I brought the toothbrush :stuck_out_tongue: just used my roommates paste)
  4. Deodorant (just nice to have)
  5. Pencil AND Calculator (To take the MDT and other tests)
  6. Duffle Bag (To carry all your clothes and towels)
  7. Undies and Undershirt (lol)
  8. Bruincard (if you don’t have yours yet, don’t sweat it, they will get you one soon as you get there)
  9. Comfortable Shoes and Flip-Flops (flip flops are nice to wear in your dorm room and stuff)
  10. Money, maybe like just $20 (When they give you you’re Bruincard, it already has $15 on it, so with the 20, you’ll have 35. That’s plenty for food, not to mention dinner and breakfast is free everyday at the dining halls. Bring more money if you want to buy stuff. Like I brought $260 for no damn reason, IDK why)
  11. Laptop (If you have one, it’s not absolutely necessary, but it makes **** hella easier)
  12. Ipod (to listen to music when you get bored, you’ll have plenty of time to just kick it)
  13. Cell Phone!! (But you cannot use it INSIDE the DORMS because you will have absolutlely no *ing signal!!! You have to go outside the dorm building just to get One *ing bar. Yeah I know!! It’s ■■■■■■■■. but bring it anyways if you want to talk to family or even your OC, they will give you their own phone #'s.
  14. UCLA Papers (any forms that you have received from ucla, including orientation reservation and acceptance. you don’t need it, but it’s nice to have)

So that’s about it. Most important to bring are Money and Phone.

Yeah, where exactly on parking lot 3 do we get dropped off? It’s just a parking structure…there’s not really a place that’s open enough to handle lots of people being dropped off lol

omg stop stressing about it. It’ll be alright lol you’re all acting like a bunch of high school freshmen :stuck_out_tongue: take it easyyy. Not everyone goes to Parking Lot 3, it’s your choice; whatever is more convenient. I just happened to take the 405 and ended up on Hilgard Avenue, so we followed the board signs posted around campus in that area and ended up there. It’s like a High School Bus parking lot, like a wide “n” shaped thingy. We parked there and the shuttle was right there in front of me. so don’t sweat it. there wasn’t even anyone there… take it easy… you can always walk over there. They don’t give a **** if you’re late.
YOU CAN SHOW UP AT ANYTIME TO ORIENTATION BEFORE 5 O’CLOCK!!!1

I think my parents are worrying more than me, actually. :stuck_out_tongue: They just want to know EXACTLY where to go. And yes, I do feel like an anxious high school freshman all over again, I’ll admit.

Baller, you seem to be the only one freaking out. From what I’ve read, people just seem to be asking polite and honest questions.

session101 represent!
