so far at ORIENTATION 101 (what happened day one)

so the first day ended... and we did a lot of stuff

i'm gunna talk about it in detail so if you want to be "surprised" at orientation with the activities then stop reading now :)

in the morning when we arrived we found out what room we are in, got our key cards for the rooms, went and put the luggage in the room in RT, and went to sproul. there was a LONGGGGG line for bruin card pickups/photos. people who already had their bruin cards found their counselors and just waited around until the bruin card processing was done. this whole time waiting we had to fill out a long survey. so after that was done everyone met up with their counselors, did some intro stuff, and we went to broad hall and saw a couple speeches by faculty. they were entertaining/funny/engaging and the speeches weren't boring.

we had lunch at 12, using our BruinCards

then back to broad hall for more presentations -- "what it means to be a bruin" and "coping with stress"

at 2:30 our counselors talked with groups about grad requirements, ge's, majors/minors, etc. if anyone is taking the math diagnostic exam it's at 3:30, same time as the music one. if you aren't taking either you have free time -- most people took a nap at the dorm or went around exploring westwood.

at 6 we had a barbeque, and there were a lot of clubs and organizations around the tables with information.

at 7 we went back to broad hall and had four current students speak. they were VERY inspiring stories, about how they dealt with their hardships, indeed HARDSHIPS, stereotypes, that they went through to get where they are now, stuff you don't see happen all the time.

around 9 we had cabaret which was HILARIOUS. i wish i had my camera... wow it was SO FUNNY. seriously don't miss out on this.

that's for day one, i'll post what we do day two tomorrow :)

my roommate is already asleep.... =X

WOW i absolutely love you for doing this.

do you know, for the math placement test thing, if you have to take it even if you passed the ap calc test?

which floor are you on? im on floor 6...

oh and for the above poster, if you got a 5 on your Calc AB or a 4/5 on your Calc BC then you don't need to take the math placement test. Otherwise you do...

savvy! thanks Jeyday :)

wow, thanks! haha you can ignore my facebook comment about how your orientation went :)

Do you notice that most of the people you see there are predominantly [pre]business-economics majors or pre-meds?
Did you notice clique-ish behavior?
Funny that they choose Broad - one of the newest buildings... as opposed to Moore.
Multiple presentations to fill up time... also Bruin-spirit sort've stuff...
Lunch at Covel I'm guessing or misc. locations depending on the cool-ness of your OC

2 years ago.... i was in the same shoes...

Wow time flies. It's a been a year.

Did everyone stay up until 3 or 4 socializing in the RT hallways?

where is broad? lol wow im no lost when it comes to buildings on campus... moore was nice and easy to find lol

Broad is north north campus. It's the art building

i hate broad. so effing far. why did they have psych 100B in that building last winter...?

anyway, just thank your lucky stars you guys aren't at orientation in 115 degree heat. that was me two years ago and even though we didn't have to trudge as far as broad, it sucked...

2nd day:
Wall-it !

OHHHHH...It was wall-it. I thought it was wallet...and I was confused for the whole summer.

Wasn't that 3rd day?

Ah, orientation! We went to Roma for lunch, best idea ever THANK YOU TERRY HEINRICH. I'm perplexed as to why they chose Broad, Moore being used for something else this summer.

calitennis and jey-day whats your facebook

i think wall it was third day during campus tour? I think i have a clue where broad is now... I think the furthest i gone for a class in north campus is bunch... and broad should be more north?

broad is the white building past the sculpture garden, next to YRL, north of Bunche

damn you orientation kids for not bringing your own laptops and taking over the rieber computer lab.

kutibah, i'm on floor 4 =)

mme-lin, that is true actually, most people i've come across are pre-med or business, but i've encountered a lot of social science too. A LOT of people are pre-med though, haha.

yahoooo, i don't know, i went to bed at 1 am =P

okay SECOND DAY STUFF (day hasn't ended completely though)

breakfast was served from 7-9 am this morning at covel. people who are taking french and german placement tests had to take them at 8 am.

okay so throughout this whole day we had a lot of workshops available. first thing we had was "majors, minors, and other programs" that were held three times, 9-10, 9-9:30, and 9:30-10. as you can see these times overlap and there are 10+ workshops to choose from, and you choose depending on your major/what you're interested in. they give you a list for that.

there are some research opportunities workshops from 10 -- i didnt go to this one cuz there was no time.

at 11 we had to meet with our orientation counselors in their dorm room (floors 8 or 9 in RT), and the OCs talk about the registration for classes format and ursa website details, etc. we also signed up to meet with them AGAIN later on in the day to talk about what we chose; you sign up with your own OC on a time sheet, and meet with them at the time you signed up. you sign up TWICE, first time somewhere from 1 pm to 6 pm, to meet with your OC in covel, and the second time, from 7 pm - 11 pm, to meet with him/her in their dorm room.

12 to 1 was lunch at covel. the computer lab in covel is open from 1-6 and open in rieber hall from 6 to 11.

from 2 until 5 there are 10+ workshops ranging from time management, choosing a major tips (i went to this one, very helpful), financial aid resource center, aap presentations, money responsibility, sports, residence halls tips, college honors, etc. choose which ones you want to go to, theyre at different places at different times and they DO overlap so you'll only be able to go to two or three, just like i did.

throughout this time, you will not only have to have fit in/decide the workshops to go to, but also go to the first OC meeting held in covel that you signed up for earlier (1 pm - 6 pm) when you meet at 11.

dinner is from 5 to 7 at covel.

after that you go to your second meeting with your OC, depending on the time you signed up for (7 pm - 11 pm)

then some more presentations you choose to go to from 6 -7 at sproul.
there is also a study list room available for people who can't get access to a computer and look up available classes -- this room has ALL the classes posted on paper all around the room. its open from 1:30 to 6:30 in covel commons 3rd floor, and then moves to the fireside lounge in rieber hall from 6:30 - 11. (i guess its so you'll be closer to the computer lab, because the computer lab changes from covel to rieber as well)

ratatoille is playing right now, it started at 9 pm in the rieber terrace multipurpose room.

at 11:30 is CARPE NOCTEM, it's some sort of scavenger hunt i think, haven't gone to it yet, and each member of the winning team receives a free ucla sweatshirt. i will post how that goes when i come back =)

btw, some info on placement tests:
the math placement test was SO EASY. there was like ONE thing from calculus lol seriously. it's all algebra, geometry, and some math analysis. if you know basic pre calc youll be fine. i didnt study for ONE SECOND cuz i forgot i had to take it lol, i found out that same day i had to take it. you need i think 16 out of 60 questions right to place into math 1, and 36 out of 60 to place into math 3a/31a. i EASILY placed into 3a/31a, haha.

when i found out i had to take it i was sooo worried but seriously, dont be worried AT ALL. i had a calculator with me by chance, but you dont really need that either lol. its basic math

FOR SPANISH PLACEMENT TEST: i needed a spanish placement test, but my counselor told me that if we want to do spanish as a language and didnt test out of it with AP credit, then they will take care of it during the fall. she said they aren't going to do a placement test for spanish if someone wants to TEST OUT OF IT TO BE EXEMPT FROM THE LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT, but they said said instead they're gunna ask us how many years we took spanish, any gap years, and based on the knowledge you know/still remember where you should be placed. its a self-assessment thing, but that can STILL CHANGE...

anyone currently on 7th floor rieber terrace? theres like a bunch of people with laptops here in the hallway so i was wondering :P

i remember that day with all the work shops... i didn't go to any lol but carpe noctum for fun, although a lot of running, my roommate's group won...
