Orientation..

I kno this sounds kinda early but I have several questions. I tried to ask UCLA but they were unhelpful and one of them were actually rude. So I thought I'd come here.

Main thing I'm concerned about is transportation. I'm probably gonna take a flight to LAX (LA airport) so I'm wondering if there's any shuttles that will help out students? I prefer not to take a cab because it will cost like 50 bucks. Is there some sort of cheap transportation that will get me to and fro?

Second, can anyone relate their orientation experiences and what they need to bring for the 3 night stay on campus?

Thanks for any info.

bumpidy bump

sorry to hear about the bad experience so far; its par for the course at a big public, though. You just don't get a lot of hand-holding and need a bit of a thick-skin to get thru it. But you're learning!

as for rides from the airport, Supershuttle http://www.supershuttle.com/ quotes $15 to Hedrick hall.

yeah well i just didnt know campus people would give me an attitude lol. r they on strike or something?? that would explain it!

but anyways how have other ppl not local to LA find their ride to UCLA??

im gonna drive down with my parents, and they will probably drop me off and go visit my uncles/aunts/grandparents while i'm at orientation. either that or they let me drive down myself and i pay the $7/day parking fee...

do the shuttle!
You don't even need to make reservations. From LAX, just follow the signs and there'll be a person there wearing a blue supershuttle shirt. And you can sign up at orientation for a shuttle back.

For orientation...I took the bus from LAX to UCLA, I only spent 1.25, compared to 15 dollars, but the trip took me 4 hours (with pretty much no traffic) and I had to walk from Westwood to Rieber with all my luggage. NOT fun! Never taking the bus again.

Oh, and if you do decide the bus is worth it, just don't take it at night, the airport stop looked kinda scary.

ah thanks jennyucla, ill make a mental note not to arrive in LAX at night.

and out of curiosity, i could understand what LA stands for but wats the X there for? haha

It's because all airports need 3 letters. Ex. JFK airport

Just like SFO and SJC. The third letter doesn't stand for anything.

I don't know how you could spend 4 hours on buses going from LAX to UCLA. Culver City Citybus 6 goes directly from the LAX transit center to UCLA and shouldn't take longer than an hour. When you get to LAX, go to the lower level outside baggage claim and get the shuttle going to parking lot C, which is free. The LAX transit center is right next to lot C.
Timetables here

Waiting for the shuttle at LAX, going to lot C, waiting for the bus, the bus takes longer than an hour, walking up to rieber...it SERIOUSLY took 4 hours. I don't recommend it.

UCLA and LAX are only a few miles apart! How could it possibly take that long?

True waiting can take a while, but I don't think it took me more than 2 and a half hours from West Hollywood to LAX via the 2 bus to Westwood and citybus 6 to LAX. But the same ride on shared ride van would cost $30 each way or parking $5-10 a day so it was worth it to me. Shared ride to UCLA is half that I guess so it might be worth your money to do that. LA public transit is not for the faint of heart, heh. But it will get you where you're going. Eventually.

wow, all of this over a measely 15 bucks? :) Take the shuttle, definitely.....

When I took the Big Blue Bus from LAX to De Neve it took just over an hour (including walking) and cost just $0.25.

"transit is not for the faint of heart"
could u elaborate this? r there hella scary ppl on the bus or something?
can u visibly see guns in ppl's pockets?

No, I mean its not for the faint of heart because it can be a pain. Waiting for the bus, waiting for the bus to get somewhere, transferring between busses, etc... Most of the people on the buses seem to be going to and from work and I've never seen anyone with a gun in public period. No scarier than in the bay area.

I thought the X meant International

no westow, people are quiet safe. it's usually the elderly, working poor, or high school students. not everyone's a gangsta carrying a gun. remember, movies and tv rot yer head.

oh haha i totally got the wrong image. sounds okay then. is there transfering buses from going to LAX to UCLA?

my mom keeps telling me how scary LA is and she told me that there was this one incident where there was shootings in LAX. >_<
