2011 AMC 10B/12B Thread

Hey guys, this coming Wednesday February 23rd the 2nd AMC test date is coming up. Please refrain from discussing questions or the difficulty of the test until the day after, when everyone took the test. It may seem trivial, but there are a LOT of cheaters out there, and you don't know who took it and who didn't, except for your own school...

Are you taking the 12B on Wednesday? I am. I need to try to score over 100 because of my 96 on the 12A.

There may be a chance that 96 is acceptable for the top 5% cut off, but try your best, I got 114 on AMC 10, so am going to try again, since on most tests I score 136, :P

Good luck on that. When I took the AMC 10A last year as a sophomore, I think I got a 90. Lol.

Question: my math teacher apparently signed me up for the AMC 12 being administered Wednesday (I love how he told me tonight in an email…lots of prep time, lol). I had never heard much about it previously. I, do, however, have a debate practice that evening. Basically, I’m wondering if, having no time to prep whatsoever, it’s even worth it for me to take the test? Or should I just head on over to my debate practice :)

^Depends, I am assuming you probably won’t score high, since you may not even know how to tackle many problems, (often times people are searching for entire solution, when you only need part of it, for example, they may ask how many solutions there are to a solution, and some people will actually start listing those solutions, when they can simply use vieta’s formula). It’s an interesting experience, I recommend taking it and trying it, but don’t be disappointed if you don’t get into top 5% :P

Hey I’m taking the 12B test this Wednesday and I’m in calculus. I was planning on studying but I have done nothing, considering the time I have are there any tips on things to study or review. Also what strategy should I take answering the test questions.

This is actually first time for me to not stress out for AMC12 hahaha. But I have to admit it feels weird that it’s gonna be my last AMC test ever! I sure miss the multiple choice style!

Problematical, some advice, if possible, start with the middle choices, since the answers go in increasing order, this way you know to go up or down. Sometimes rather than being smart, do something stupid and see what happens, and feel free to be cheap and plug in some options for your answers to see if it works or not.

For geometry, if you bring a compass and make accurate measurements, you could get a better idea from just creating those measurements, be warned, that on the test itself they wont make things to scale, because of that.

My friend, only knew the first 11, and guessed C straight down for the last 14, and he made enough points to get in, seems to work, :D

Rumors say the cut off was 117 AMC 10 and 93 for AMC 12, :stuck_out_tongue: I can’t verify their veracity, other than its accepted numbers at Stuyvesant High school.

Thanks shushugah, I’m going to try prepping a little today and hope for the best:).

Wait, shushugah? Really? I’d be pumped if the cutoff was 93.

Also, you should spend less time studying for AMC and spend more time getting better at balloono :p

why would you be pumped? Yeah sure, do you talk to kids with less than three digits on their test? lol

does anyone know where i can get good practice questions? preferably from past tests? after looking at this thread i realized that i have the 12B tomorrow, so i need to practice. thanks

^Go on art of problem solving and go to AoPS Wiki- you’ll find some good stuff there (past AMCs, AIMEs, introduction to some helpful topics in combinatorics, and some helpful theorems)

You obviously qualified for AIME, right? Oh wait…

Hahahaha, ****, you had an easier, test,

I dislike aops wiki, I prefer this part of the website, [USA • Art of Problem Solving](http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/Forum/resources.php?c=182&sid=9b65b150f662835ccd204b8fc7f7670a)

where you get a nice printable version of the test, and when you are done, you can click on the “number” of the question, and get better explanations of the solutions.

ugh is it even worth it, though? i mean if you’re good at math wouldn’t your problem solving skills stay the same especially considering that the testing is tomorrow?

well “being good at math” is not the standard A+ students, but rather the creative kids, and hey try it, it will be an interesting experience, :)

taking 12B tomorrow, hope i dont fail.

wahh whatever i’m not studying. i have too much other things to do…
btw is the 12b the only test being administered tomorrow?
