God forbid they could just send out emails -_-

Eek this is so nervewracking. I’m out of state from NJ- has anyone out of state received an invite yet?

How can everyone who is invited to interview get the scholarship, if they interview the top 2% and only have 150 B/K scholars? Do they just count on having a 30% yield?

I found the following info when I was researching UMD 2 years ago for my older daughter. It’s a bit out of date, but still interesting, I think:
http://www.provost.umd.edu/campus_review_2007/Documentation/MeritScholarshipYields.pdf

This is better than some other schools that offer only 100 scholarships and if only 25 accept the other 75 go to waste.

Has anyone on the west coast gotten a letter yet?

hm, around 50% is good considering that these are the people who are juggling Ivy offers.

But a full scholarship at a school like UMD isnt an easy offer to turn down, especially when the bk can set you up for great grad opportunities.

33dmjjm, I very much doubt that people in the west have gotten any letters because the first wave just hit people in MD today.

Got B/K in the mail today. Yes, we live in MD. We are an “upper middle class” family, so we will not be getting any “need based aid.” But that does not mean we have $50,000 extra dollars just sitting around, especially since living here is soooo expensive! We already got the full ride at UMBC, worth $60,000. But b/k is better. Good luck everyone, let’s hear it for merit…

Anyone care to post some quick stats? :]

Why did I expect the perfect storm when I clicked that link?

Lucky you guys dont live in California. State schools in California, except for SLO,
dont compare to state schools elsewhere. There is very very very little merit money in the state of California for he the UCs or state schools. Cal and UCLA’s merit regents scholarship are $2000 a year and then if you show financial need they will kick in some more. Since I dont qualify for need based aid I basically will get $2000/year and a couple of perks. The UC’s are on average $27,000 year and state schools are about $20,000 and totally impacted. That is why I am hoping to get an interview for the B/K scholarship.

Did the admissions lady happen to mention the general time increments for these “waves”? Do you think within 2 weeks would be an accurate time frame?

She didnt, and I have no idea. I would love to think that the rest should be out within a week, but i really dont know =(

at 33dmjjm, good luck!

This scholarship is most likely going to be a deciding factor for me.

However, if I get a similar amount of money to the half through presidents/department scholarships, it’ll be the same thing. It’s still possible to get even full tuition paid off without a B/K.

If I remember correctly, some stats from last year were, 380 offers (about 40% FULL), about 150 enrolled (about 60% FULL) …

Also, ALL B/K scholars (partial and full) receive a little over $1,000/year book allowance.

Edit:
I have several requests for stats. The only stat post I could still find is my epic fail at Harvard :(, post #14.

Plumazul, do you mind giving us a quick rundown of your stats? It might give people a general idea of what to expect :)

what is most important in selection process, just curious

Oh my god… Other than slightly different APs and SATs, And the fact that I’m a guy, we’re the same person. Piano, yes. Hispanic, yes. Jazz combo, yes. Essay subject, yes. This is slightly weird.

Then again, you never know with the bk. I can only hope.

S1 got a full B/K two years ago. 2380, 3.76 UW, 4.56 W, 800 Math II/800 Physics/730 WH, 9 APs, 13 post-APs, several major national awards, NMF, teaching experience and leadership position. Turned it down. Sigh.

S2 graduated last year with a 2290, 3.49 UW, 4.26 W, full IB plus 11 APs, leadership and athletics (and a couple of other interesting activities) and got the President’s Scholarship – $5k/year.

We know several folks with similar stats who took the B/K (half and full), ran with it, and are now interviewing for PhD programs at the top grad schools. Yes, you can be invited to Ivy grad programs from a state school.

i didn’t get anything in the mail today, but people who live around me (different neighborhood though) got theirs. do you think its possible that mine is coming in a different wave ? =/

NOLAhornets23- exact same boat as you!

I got the banneker key letter today. I live in Maryland, 15 minutes from CP. Can I attend a date other than the one my invite says if I’m out of town?

here are my stats:
