2011 Banneker/Key Scholarship

Yeah I heard that some people got Mar 1st also.

from the people at my school who got it, they all had march 1st interviews. im guessing thats the only wave thats been sent yet? unless someone else has another date.

S wore a suit. (He had one; we did not go out and buy one for the occasion.) While some guys went business casual, they all wore ties. Some girls wore suits, others nice sweaters and slacks, skirts and the like. Wear comfortable shoes. Noone changes clothes. It was sunny but chilly outside on the tour.

This is like a job interview for a job that pays pretty darned well. B/K scholars represent the best of what UMD has to offer. You are being invited to be essentially an ambassador for the University. Come neatly dressed, nicely groomed, and be prepared to both listen and talk.

Again–did anyone in northern NJ get one? I know I have good stats, but so-so ECs so I’m pretty worried, and the fact that it seemed like I could have walked to Maryland to get my actual acceptance letter after I received the online decision certainly didn’t help either. I’ll be anxiously checking the mailbox all this week still.

I got my letter inviting me to the March 3 date on Friday.

Stats and location please :)

I’m from Kansas City.

ACT: 34

SAT II’s: 800 US History, 760 Biology M
AP’s: English Language-5, European History-5, US History-5, Biology-5, Calculus BC-5, Psychology-5, Microeconomics-5

4.61 weighted GPA, 4.0 unweighted

1 in both categories in a class of 363

National Merit Commended, AP Scholar with Distinction, various other local honors

National Honor Society President, National History Club President, Debate Captain (state champion, 4-time national qualifier, 2-time national placer, and recipient of a speaker award at 1 national tournament), Spanish National Honor Society, Baseball, Freshman Mentor Program (executive board), various other activities…

Over 300 hours of community service with a number of organizations (mostly the local MS Society)

Spent the last 5 summers studying at Davidson College, Duke University, and Cambridge University

Question for the current B/K Scholars:

To what extent does the B/K designation affect your daily life at the University? I know it’s supposed to be a very prestigious honor, but does anyone know you are a B/K Scholar? Do you walk around like a Star-bellied Sneech, with special recognition and privileges? Or is it really just a nice merit scholarship that comes with a perk or two?

My kid is not that enthused about going to Maryland…she really wanted a smaller school, but applied because, well, hey, it’s her state school and it has the major she wants. She wasn’t expecting the B/K invitation, so really never thought about what that might be like. But as I understand it, if she chooses to enroll at Maryland now, she’s a B/K Scholar for sure, and the only thing to be determined is the level of financial support she’ll receive. (Correct?)

Is there anything about being a B/K scholar that makes the Maryland experience better for you–other than the fact that it costs less?

There are a few B/K get-togethers (especially 1st year), but other than that, there is no big emphasis on who is B/K vs. who is not (or who got partial vs. full B/K). There are a FEW who go out of their way to point out that they are B/K, but they are in the minority). Not only does it cost less if you get FULL B/K, essentially it costs nothing, you are guaranteed on-campus housing all 4 years, and it’s a sweet deal. Since you are in-state, a partial B/K would be nothing to sneeze at, either. Your DD can spend as much (or as little) time with people she went to h.s. as she chooses.

The housing all 4 years is a big perk. I honestly haven’t told many people (my old roommate, my three best friends, and people who are also BK), but I mentioned it to another person recently because she is the third in our housing group (along with a girl who knows) and I said I could pull her in for senior year if we don’t get commons and go for an on campus apartment. At that point she was so glad it would save her money that she didn’t care.

I haven’t been to any BK get-togethers other than two meetings of the iPod pilot program they started my freshman year.

The biggest perk will probably come at graduation though, when I have the option to take a year off because I don’t have to pay back the almost 200,000 in debt I would have accumulated at my original first choice school. (I was full tuition despite my families ability to pay less than 10K back then and ability to pay 0 now).

EDIT: But if she’s BK she’s already in Honors, which depending on the program will create a small community within the school for her. (I can only speak for Gemstone, which basically does.)

All B/K invites have now been sent.

Thank you for that info armmusic77. Did they send the remaining invites on Friday or today?

I don’t know. But I can’t call again right now.

If someone else doesn’t mind calling?

Hi, this is my first time posting on CC, though I have been a long time reader. I just called the office, and was notified that I was not invited for the B/K scholarship, and was under consideration for the other scholarships. I don’t want to sound arrogant or anything, but I was always under the impression that I would have been considered for B/K, and kind of expected receiving it. I am in the top 3% of my class (that I know of), I have a 4.0 GPA (4.72 WGPA), a 1550/1600 SAT, MD Distinguished Scholar Finalist, editor-in-chief of my school newspaper, yet I still was not invited. I was just wondering what could possibly have gone wrong? Although my essays/recs were not stellar, I doubt that they would have been bad enough to hinder my chances.

Do siblings matter? Because I have a sibling who received B/K, with a GPA lower than mine.

I am just worried now because perhaps my application is at fault, and I can’t do anything to change it now.

I’m just honestly shocked that I wasn’t even considered. Just wanted some opinions!

obsessionchick, that is surprising, indeed. Re: siblings, both of our kids were awarded B/K scholarships. Not at all sure if that’s common.

obsessionchick, I’m from NJ but I feel the same way as you do. I’m ranked 2/334 (4.6 weighted out of 4.7) in my class, have a 1530/2330 SAT, several leadership positions in activities such as marching band, and have been at the University of Maryland twice as a qualifier for National History Day. Should I call about the invite or just let it go? I have a wonderful scholarship to Rutgers, but my twin sister is going to Maryland and I sort of want to go to UMd with her :/

@obsessionchick - the only thing i can say is that i think that the majority of the b/k recipients have stats similar to yours. there are tons of 2300+ 4.0 students who don’t receive b/k, so they’re obviously looking for something different

Another benefit to being a B/K scholar is that certain competitive opportunities are easier to land e.g. internships, study abroad, etc. Most B/K scholars that I’ve met rarely mention the honor but most have included the honor on their resumes.

@bandgeek, I would just call them and see, if its not the news you hoped, then you can just let it go and move on!

And i do see what you mean @ricepicker, but it still sucks when we’ve all worked just as hard :(

There’s no point waiting on something that wont come. Just call and put your mind at ease.
