“National Recognition Weekend is tentatively scheduled for June 18-21, 2011. However, these dates are subject to change and will be solidified after U.S. Presidential Scholars are announced.”

I’m starting not to believe the anecdotes of having ten or so in a single school. There are only forty spots per state on average.

Website says there are 3000 nationwide Besides you can look at the list and count them yourself!

As Aniger said, you can check for yourself on the list, but besides that, doesn’t it make sense? Top kids often aggregate at a few schools because the good schools make them top kids and because top kids are often top because they have the resources to go to good schools.

As for my school (which had 9/70 nominated), it hosts an outside SAT prep course which it encourages all students to take, and your financial aid will follow if you take the course (I go to a private school).

@keellota, … the College Board has admitted that the single strongest correlation to high SAT scores is High Family Income. Since these families tend to “cluster”, it would not only be “believable” that many students with high ACT/SAT scores would come from the same schools, it would be EXPECTED …
In my opinion, and with all due respect to the wonderful students named, the persons responsible for this program should probably rethink their criteria, or maybe just eliminate this program in favor of something more inclusive.

Is anyone familiar with the selection of students for the Presidential Scholars Program based on performing arts? The website seems to indicate that these students automatically progress to the semifinalist stage.

The arts nominations come through the YoungArts program–here’s their website:
YoungArts

Yesterday I got an email from GT PSP notifying me of my rejection status. It is hard to say if ‘Performing Arts’ is one of the criteria or not; as a matter of fact, the website is pretty vague in disclosing the selection criteria.

All that I can tell you is that I have an excellent track record, in academics / research /EC, but still didn’t make it. It does not make much difference to me because even if I became a PSP finalist, it was less likely that Georgia Tech would have been my top college choice. Without the PSP, I know for sure that GT is not even a choice for me.

I wish you all the very best luck on your PSP Finalist selection.

@NickSmith I’m pretty sure these folks are talking about the program sponsored by the US Dept of Education, not the school level program at GA Tech.

Is a 1570 CR+M in NC too low for this program (2350 total)? Just wondering what the cut-off was; thanks!

I’m from CA and I haven’t yet received the official letter in the mail although my GC received the school forms already. Should I contact PSP to at least get my login info for the application?

Yes call them. My son never got his letter either and I had to call them to email it

Can anyone post one or all of the essay prompts? I entered the URL given to me in my letter but the link isn’t working on any of my browsers

I just got an email from PSP telling me that they just mailed the application info to all PSP nominees at my school two days ago and that we now have until March 4th to complete our applications because they were late. This happen to anyone else?

lol @NickSmith
this is something TOTALLY different.

For the application, is there any way to list honors (such as National Merit Finalist)? There are sections for school-related activities, special talents, community service, and jobs. The only likely place to put them looks like activities, but because they want dates of participation I’m not sure…

@CranberryOrange, I got the same email.

Son has not received his letter in the mail yet, but was told by his guidance counselor. However, my son probably will not compete in the program, as a very good family friend is getting married that Saturday (June 18) and my son does not want to miss the wedding. In a way, he’s glad he doesn’t feel pressured to complete all that paperwork and write all the essays! (He might feel differently if we had not already been to the White House…)

I have not received my letter in the mail yet, but of course since I live in Montana, the covered wagon could be stuck in the snow somewhere! :)

In Michigan, just got the letter delivered to our home today.
