2007 Presidential Scholars

Yet another application! Woo!

http://www.ed.gov/programs/psp/2007/candidates.html

It's due Feb. 22 for the "lucky" people who made it

Darn, I didn't make the cutoff!

this is for seniors right? and what is the sat score cutoff

Varies by state. Generally above 2350

what are the requirements? how do people generally make it? are they nominated by teachers or is like by SAT scores of something?

Holy crap. I'm a candidate, and I didn't even know about it.

Wait, apparently, I'm supposed to have a user ID and password. And I'm supposed to get a letter of invitation. When do they send those out?

They were mailed Thursday so you'll get them early this week. You can see the MS Word version of the app here:

Pretty straightforward. Like a college application.

My son just recieved the letter. I came on CC to find out about it. I thought maybe it was a scam like Whos Who in HS. What is the story? Is it like National Merit?

I've never heard about it until now, but it looks pretty legitimate (and competitive) just based on the application. It's not a scholarship, though. You get recognition and a chance to spend a week in D.C. doing cool stuff. That's the impression I got from the website.

I think it is legitimate as well. I remember only one kid in my county was a presidential scholar, and he had perfect SAT and ACT scores. He got accepted to Harvard.

Oo, it seems like they considered writing this year. Would this be the first year they've done so? I had a 800/800 for M/V and a 750 for the writing, and I wasn't high enough for my state, so does that mean everyone on the list had 2360+?

It's very prestigious... I'm so jealous, I missed the cutoff by 10 points in my state. =(

Is being a candidate prestigious? Like NM semifinalist?

where do you get your ID and password so you can access the application?

I'm almost positive it is more prestigious than NMS. There are alot less presidential scholars chosen than there are NM semifinalists.

Tinmom: It's even better!

tintinmom, this is legitimate. I am excited to apply, and good luck to your child as well :)

I think it may have been 2370+...I had 2360 and didn't make it...ah well, no big.

Last year it was based on Math and Verbal scores only, and Writing was not included even though all the students had taken the new SAT. Not sure how they did it this year.

Found on-line that in 2001 there were 587 students who scored a perfect 1600 on the old SAT (Math + Verbal), and that number is probably about the same today. So if they have 2600 candidates, then most (approx. 2000) have almost, but not perfect scores.

Of course, this favors students from less populous states. Cutoff is probably around 1550 there.

mochamaven - If the cutoff is the same nationwide, then I think candidacy was based on math and CR scores only. Because I had a 2360 too.
