2011 prop and wings

The process is random. I will receive a random base from either the east coast or overseas. I should find out in April which base I will be at.

Falcon I remember tapping the back of her head a few times while waiting for chinese take out. I would tap her and say "your slow"....Third time she turned put me in a wrist lock and brought me to my knees...your probably right she wouldn't like it but it still is fun.

Hope everyone gets their P&W and a really cool OPS assignment. G4C, Ramius, Eagle where do you want to go?

Do you get to request..."dream sheet"?

I remember being at Elmendorf and cadets being there during the summer. I bet they didn't realize how blessed they were, because every AD flyer has that as their number 1. Just imagine the last tee time is @ 11 at night in the summer. Elemendorf was our very favorite assignment ever! If anyone gets that just be prepared to go fishing and camping...every squdaron clears out by 3 on Friday. Typically, the squadron will post where they will be for the weekend and it is just one big party for 3 days. They also have Cope Thunder

We have no ability to request at all. 100% random. Unfortunate when some of the WORST cadets get someplace like Aviano (resulting in drunk people changing both cadet policy and requiring a formal apology to both the wing commander and the Italian people....) while some of the best get places like Whiteman or Barksdale.

Aviano is a great base also! I guess Hickham would also be somwhere cadet would jump for joy when they got their orders. I think Cannon, Almogordo, and Minot would be in the realm of Barksdale... Mountain Home, the hub of Elmore County and 1 McDonalds would go in that pile. Although Boise and the Snake River could be great diversions. SJ isn't much better, the town rejoiced only a couple of years ago when we got a Logan's and a Chilies. Frightening thought Applebees and Outback only opened here @ 10 yrs ago.

Yeah Nellis doesn't have much to offer either. 118 degree summers. Nothing but desert all around. Bad water so hard it comes out of the tap solid. Oh wait that is Edwards...We have Casinos, Nightlife, every concievable place to eat you can imagine.

For those who are gung ho into test piloting and r&d would Edwards be a lot of fun?

Uhh Edwards middle of the desert. Went there for a Tae Kwon Do tournement, and stayed at the TLF (Think small apartment) was like something out of the old Lucille Ball show. The base is a typical base, but feels as isolated as some small overseas bases. But yes they do have lots of fun stuff going on, and some real BAMF Pilots...gotta be to do what they do.

I'm doing AETC at Lackland this summer...hurray for little sleep and 15 hour work days!

We drove through Edwards once on our way for a PCS. I remember saying to Bullet that the AF should consider that assignment a remote. As we were planning our route, he asked if I wanted to stop over at Cannon. I told him I would be happy if I died and never had to go to Cannon :D.

Now if I was cadet, I think I would be hoping for Eglin, you have a fighter test squadron, great beaches (even the military has their own private beach) and great restaurants...of course you might have to be hurrivac if you go in July. Andrews would also be cool. Langley of course should be any young pilot hopefuls dream spot (F-22). I think the 90th at Elmendorf is closed now for the conversion, but it might be starting up by the summer

Lakenheath would probably be a bummer, since it is known as Little AMerica and London is a haul to get to.

Told my wife I am eternally greatfull the AF never sent me to Edwards. I woould have gotten out then and there. I worked with a guy who couldn't wait to go back to Edwards so it is all perspective. I know the Clinic Commander there now and he actually like the place too.

As for Cannon my wife spent some of her early years there. In the sixties it was one of the Base the AF would allow members with Asian spouses to be assigned. There were bases they tried very hard to avoid sending people.

Wow, you would never think of the AF assigning people because of their spouse. I guess maybe that is why Fayetteville is also known as Fayettenam.

I place Edwards as the same as SJ...I can't wait to get out of here (I am a city girl), but I can't count on both of my hands how many retirees are here from the flying world. We know 6 guys applying for contractor jobs on the base as their first choice, and at least another 6 who are airline pilots. I think the difference in all of these cases, the parents took remotes (a couple did at least 2) to stay here. One of our friends' ds is graduating with our ds. They have known ea other since 3rd grade. He considers himself a townie, since he never moved again, meanwhile our DS has lived in 4 more homes.

Some spouses also enjoy the small town atmosphere, as a Realtor in No. VA, I get alot of wives who state emphatically, place us out of the beltway, I don't care if he has to travel an hr. each way, I just never want to be on 95. The traffic scares me :(

born at seymour johnson (don't remember anyhting)

lived at elmendorf = awesome (dad made igloos, sledding with dogs, watched start of iditarod, lots of planes and sonic booms)

lived at edwards = not great. flying part would be cool, but as far as things to do, its nearly an hour from "real civilization"

lived at Eglin = most amazing place ever. the private militray beach is quite nice (although the huricanes keep destroying the buildings and playground there). but awesome surroundings.

that's my input from the bases just mentioned i've lived at (and that's from a kids perspective, so take from it what you want)

I take it you have gold wings or are getting them soon

What yr were you at Elmendorf?

eagle is a fellow 2010er pima. ;)

I think he has gold if I'm not mistaken.

so hornet lets hear your story! We know you probably have a texan drawl, but are you like every other texan and have the flag somewhere in your room...what is it with evryone from Texas, they always have a flag...I have even seen dog houses painted like the flag. Let me guess Texas is G*d's country, or at least that's what they always tell me ;)

Wrong person to be asking. I have no flags in my room nor do I care when people here bash Texas. ;) Haven't lived there all my life, so I don't have an accent (besides saying y'all) nor do I think of it as "God's country" (maybe bible belt?!) :)

My life then:
1988-1991 = Victoria and Port Arther, TX
1991-1995 = Anaheim, CA
1995-1999 = Houston, TX
1999-2002 = Tokyo, Japan
2002-2006 = Houston, TX (back to the old house)
2006-present = USAFA! :)

Well you will fit in at SJ, Y'all is a part of every sentence ;)

elmendorf from 1991 - 1994 i think.

yes i have gold for either 20+ years, serving in combat, or great-grandpa in army air corps. take your pick

Ahh the Family Tree, I never cease to be amazed by the family stories. You find out the parents, aunt's and uncle's, grandparents all served.
