2012/13 Spring Transfer Thread

Thank you for sharing hoopking92. I tried to call this morning, no one answered. So I emailed one of the admission officers, he told me that they would try to send out all the decisions by the end of this month. GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
I am new here, below is my stats:
Applying to: CNS(Mathematics)
GPA: 3.66
Hours: 56 (will be 63 after this semester)
not so much EC
1 year of university background in China, decent essays, a couple of recommendations, Phi Theta Kappa member

Hey hoopking, don’t toss and turn over what one admissions office phone operator said. Honestly when I was calling to make sure my transcript was in order (because I turned it in out of an envelope, etc; etc;) one person told me that I had an incomplete on my record and it would hurt my admission and a second person told me that I didn’t have an incomplete and that I actually had a note about AP credits that was a red flag (?!) and a third person checked everything out and said everything was in order.

I know this is a different issue but I think there are a lot of people in that office and there are also a lot of frantic calls around decision times. It seems like admissions employees sometimes just want to get you off the phone with a ‘concrete’ answer when there isn’t one. Try to push it out of your mind, I’m confident that GPAs are not the only determinate of an admittance. Besides, if it makes you feel better, the person you spoke to did say that the low GPAs had ‘already been denied.’

@khaled what was your GPA?

Hi everyone, besides what I posted above(3.66 GPA etc), I have gotten all A’s in my math courses, and the highest level I took was Calculus 3. What are my chances to get into Math major? Thanks a lot! I seriously need to be patient…have been so frustrated…

@rolfz

I have a lower GPA than most on here, 3.49

Just an update on my situation:

I’m completing the 30 hours for admission this semester. Therefore, I won’t hear back until January after I submit my transcript from the current semester. As I said before, I predicted I would have a 3.44-ish GPA (I’m aware that this is on the low end). That GPA looks to become a reality as I have all As in my courses currently.

I’m applying to COLA Economics and CNS Math. I’ve taken both Macro and Micro Econ and gotten As in both.

I feel like there won’t be any spots available in January since all of the spots are being offered right now to transfer students that already had their 30 hours completed. Will there be any left?

Do I have any shot at all? It feels like a lost cause. If I don’t get in for the spring, I would apply for fall 2013. However, I’d be applying with the same GPA. So if I don’t get in now, I doubt I’d get in for the fall. I’d have to wait and apply for the spring 2014.

Any response is appreciated!

Hey Lakehorn15, I know how stressful it is, hang in there.
I applied for CNS Math for the spring semester with 3.66 and A’s on all 3 Calculus classes. I just got rejected the day before Thanksgiving. I am going to call them after holiday jus to find out why I didn’t get in again (second time…)
I do think you have a shot for COLA, but CNS could be harder to get in. No matter what don’t give up! good luck~ :D

@kha1ed

Could you say your stats, and what you applied to, please? I’m applying in the Spring but my GPA will be around the same as yours. Thank you!

I just want everybody to know that I got into UT UGS with a 3.41. If you havent gotten accepted yet or are still waiting do not be discouraged. I look forward to seeing all of you at orientation.

@Olivia532 - That’s really surprising. Usually a 3.66 is enough for CNS or COLA. Are you an out-of-state or international student?

@Olivia532 Wow. I can’t believe you didn’t get in with a 3.66. That makes me feel like I have no hope. What was your second choice major? And why didn’t you get into UGS if they consider that as a third option?

Also, I read on the UT website that if you don’t get accepted to your first choice or second choice major, then they see if you are considered for admission to the UGS. Is this true? Because hoopking92 got into UGS with a lower GPA than me. As of now, I just want to get in.

@kbp7794 I am in-state student, and I am from China 4 years ago but Im not considered as international student. I was kinda surprised too…what’s worse is that this is my second time got rejected. So I am going to call them to see why. I actually got into A&M Math major, but I don’t want to leave Austin and give up my job, so I will try again for fall semseter. I may end up applying for COLA.

@lakehorn15 hey, don’t lose hope, I think there could be something I am missing that I don’t know, that’s why Im going to call.
My second choice was UGS… I am not sure if they consider you for your second choice …obvious it didn’t happen to me…

@Olivia: Third times a charm! What was your second choice major? Mine was Philosophy.

Ooops, didnt read that. Still, is that better than COLA?

I think it is easier to get into UGS than COLA,not sure though, I need to look into that.

■When you apply to UT Austin, you’ll be instructed to select both a first-choice major and a second-choice major. Initially you’ll be considered for admission to your first-choice major. If you aren’t admitted to that major, you’ll be considered for your second-choice major.
■Students who do not qualify for admission to either of their major choices are considered for a third option: admission to the “Undeclared” major in the School of Undergraduate Studies. Many students are admitted to UT Austin but not to their requested majors. (International first-year applicants are considered only for their first- and second-choice majors.)

This is off of UT’s website. What does this mean? Does it really mean that if you aren’t accepted to your first two majors, then they consider you for UGS? That doesn’t seem right because if it were, then there would be a lot more people getting accepted into UGS. What does everyone think?

@Nadia102

3.49, 37 hours(46 including this semester), Bs in calc 1, 2 and physics 1,2. Positive trend, good essays and a decent resume with some volunteer work and phi theta kappa. Applied for Gov-COLA and UGS.

@hoopking92

Could you tell me your stats and what you applied to, please? You and kha1ed are giving me hope that I’ll have a chance. Thank you!

By the way, does anyone know if it’s harder to apply in the fall/spring? Because it seems like the GPAs for accepted Spring transfers (more specifically COLA) are lower than that of Fall transfers.

@hoopking, glad to hear you got in after much worrying!

Does anyone know if it is necessary to accept our admission? From the website it looks like we do not go through that process…no deposit…no accept or deny admission mechanism…but I want to make sure. I haven’t gotten my larger snail mail packet yet so maybe that will be enlightening.

Also does anyone know if the more popular classes open up more spots for transfers during registration? I am mainly looking at M314 (I think that’s it…Elem. Statistics). I am pretty sure I need to take it this spring or else my entire 4 year graduation plan is f%cked, but I’m not a math major so I know I’m not ‘guaranteed’ a spot.

@austonian I believe they give you about a month to accept your admission and pay your deposit, you should see the deadline date on your mystatus page. & When I got in this fall, I didn’t get a package it was just a letter.

&A couple spots might open up, but they will be very few so you have to make sure you register for them the second they open up.
