2012 - 2013 calendar, quesitons!

Hey there! I’m currently a senior in HS and will apply for both, Cal Poly SLO and Pomona, but I don’t know how the quarter system works, when would school begin for me?

According to this website

[2012-13 ACADEMIC CALENDAR - Office of the Registrar - Cal Poly](http://www.ess.calpoly.edu/_records/acad_cal/2012_13cal.html)

School starts on June 18 2012, but I dont know if that applies for new freshman? Also, I’ve read that it’s hard to get into classes so how long do you think it would take me to graduate if I wanna study an industrial engineering major?

P.S: in your opinion, what’s better quarters or semesters? and why?

Thank you!

The new academic year starts in June, but unless you’re taking summer classes, school doesn’t start until mid to late September. Quarters move at a quicker pace than Semesters, which can be good and bad. Good, since if you hate a class you get it over with fast, bad because if you are struggling you’re more likely to fall behind. And you don’t get to know people in your classes as well usually. Classes can be difficult to get, but if you’re smart about it, you shouldn’t have a problem getting out of here on time, even if it means taking a few 7 am’s. I personally like the quarter system. I didn’t really have any trouble adjusting to it either.

Thank you for the reply NTKS17, I think the quarter system is better than the semester system as well. I’m kinda worried about the crowded classes since I dont want to graduate in 6 or 5 years instead of in 4. Do you think the breaks between each quarter are good enough? Also, are the classes harder in quarters since you are learning the topics at a much faster rate than you would if you were in a semester system?

Thanks!
