Main concerns: affirmative action, SAT II Spanish score, no big academic achievements (USAMO, Siemens), too well-rounded

Thanks very much in advance!!

lol why are you even posting here, you know your chances.

amazing scores. spanish wont hurt you, yale only looks at the top two SAT subject tests.

and your location will probably help, while your ethnicity wont.

lack of leadership positions however...

but great chances!

Dude!
I'm asian!
I play alto sax!
I got basically the same SAT and SAT2 Subjects!
I got the same ACT!
I got regional finalist in Siemens!
I don't have all those fancy awards!
I'm applying to Yale EA!

Woah the world is smaller than I thought. Well, if you don't make it, I certainly wont.

do you think talking w/ the yale fencing coach would help my chances at all? i think it's kinda to late to get recruited, but my coach told me yale is having trouble getting fencers.

as for lack of leadership positions, nobody has ever said dat to me before. section leader of 3 different bands + miscellaneous clubs seemed pretty good leadership w/ most other ppl i asked. now dat someone said i lack leadership, i'm kinda worried...

I'm no expert, but I'm told that in fencing an "A" rating will get you recruited, a "B" will arouse interest, and a "C" will get you an interview. I've also been told that the Yale coach is not much of an advocate for less than stellar prospects.

Your academic credentials look good, but I wouldn't count on fencing helping you out. Good luck.

Just a few comments:

I am a fencer who is also a senior applying to colleges. I am an A07, (earned it as a sophomore), on the Junior points list, and compete internationally. I am posting this to say two things; I have heard that stereotype above of which coaches recruit which ratings, etc, and I can say that it is not as true as one may think. Although an A would indeed be more attractive than a B, etc, the recruitment process depends on many other factors such as how badly they need experienced fencers and what kind of scores you have.

Therefore, I wholeheartedly recommend contacting the fencing coach. You have nothing to lose, especially since Yale is not exactly known as a powerhouse fencing school. I am no expert at all, but in my view, the worst that could happen is that the coach says he is not interested, and you still have your strong application to present to the adcom. If he says that he could use somebody with a few years experience who is willing to work hard, then he might write a recommendation letter, etc and that could really help your chances.

So yeah, in case you didn't read that heap of verbal mess above, contact the coach-you have nothing to lose.

I wish you the best of luck.

(Fencers, FTW!!!)

In...............

good chance
