2012 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

I really want to, but I’m not sure whether my parents will let me. But seriously, I’ve been pumped up for the contest since when I found out about it like April last year.

submitting in writing (maybe some art, depending on how some ongoing projects turn out)
-poetry
-short story
-flash fiction

and thassit :)

@thedegraded
I read in the forum from last years contest that they just want a synopsis. Some of the people literally went chapter by chapter and explained what was going to happen in their story.

Yes, I plan on submitting an art portfolio and a short story.
I submitted a short story last year and won a gold key.

Does anyone know about the submission fee?

It says on the registration thing that it’s $5, but I remember reading in last year’s Art and Writing thread that it’s $10.

Pretty sure it depends on your region? Check your school’s zip code to see where you fall. I know my region (Midwest At Large) is 5.

@sumobats
Thanks. I’m actually one of the people that did the chapter-by-chapter business. Woops. A synopsis would be easier for me, so I guess that’s good news.

By the way, where’s this “forum” that you’re talking about? Is it on the actually awards website?

I’ve never heard of this before. I tried Google, but have failed. Does anyone have a link?

Sorry, I made a silly error in my Google search :-)

I’m part of the western region at-large for writing. I’m actually really excited. Does the work submitted have to have been created this year?

Nope. It can be however new or old as you want.

Glorious. Definitely submitting for journalism and probably others.

figured i’d ask on this thread, rather than start a whole new thread, but does anyone know of any other writing contests/competitions where pretty much any American student can submit work to?

I tried doing a google search, but it’s hard to sort through ones that don’t seem legitimate or are actually worth submitting to.

I’m ALREADY getting impatient for the results D:

Check out the literary magazines The Claremont Review, Polyphony HS, and Cicada. Those are all legit and focused entirely on teen writing-- Cicada and The Claremont Review pay if they select your piece, and The Claremont Review and Polyphony HS have annual contests with sizable cash prizes. For Polyphony HS, you can also be an editor/reader (it’s fun!) which shows further dedication to writing, if you want something to put on applications.

Writer’s Digest hosts a lot of contests, but you’ll be going up against adults. And then if you check duotrope.com you can find directories for a billion litmags, but again, not geared specifically towards high schoolers.

This thread kinda already exists.

@emeraldEvi thank you!! very helpful info (:
