Scholastic Art and Writing Awards

Didn't see a thread on this...hope I'm not replicating a thread that's somewhere else?

Anyone entering the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards? If so, what are you entering?

It's my second year - last year I entered a flash fiction, a short story, and two poetry collections. I was in the middle school category and won three regional gold keys, a silver key, and an American Voices Nomination. I'm not counting on doing that well this year, haha, though I'd love to win a national award this year. Not getting my hopes up. This year I'm entering 3 poetry collections, 2 flash fictions, and 2 memoirs. I think I'll be entering a sculpture and a mixed media piece, too, depending on whether or not I can get my cheap camera to take good pictures of them.

this is my 2nd year too. I submitted 2 pieces and got a regional silver key on one. though now that I look back on it, it was pretty bad. :stuck_out_tongue: I just started writing back then so I’ve gotten a lot better since last year.

I think I’m just going to enter a senior portfolio. the money would be nice. besides entering things in my portfolio into other categories too, I don’t think I’ll do anything

This is my second year as well. Last year I entered a necklace on a whim and won a gold key. The year I am submitting three glass platters and a few paintings/drawings (I only want to submit one, but my family has two more that they want me to submit, so we will see).

This is going to be my first year.
Last year I was going to but I had some emotional chaos going on so I missed the deadline. I will probably enter Photography, Design, and Writing (novel!). It’s really convenient because I can just use my NaNoWriMo…

This is going to be my first year as well. I am submitting a humor piece. I hope it goes well. Aiming for a gold key!

What is this? I’ve never heard of it before, but it sounds like something I would love to do! Do you have the link for it?

This is my third year. I am going to work hard on my journalism story. I expect good results :)

is anyone else behind on their pieces?

Nope, I’m actually basically done with my application. I finished photographing on Thursday, I just need to pick my favorite photos (stupid glass/ceramics only allows four photos) and send in my application form.

I’ve written a couple poems and a flash fiction but they kind of suck and I wish I had someone to look them over and tell me whether they’re worth submitting at all. I feel sort of awkward asking my English teacher.

When is the deadline for submissions? I spent like 5 minutes on the website and couldn’t find it, but then again I only spent 5 minutes.

It varies by region/category, the deadline has already passed for some regions. You need to make an account, select what category you are entering and then it will tell you the deadline.

Ah I see. It’s probably too late then. And I’m a junior so doing it next year probably wouldn’t help out on an application.

What category/where do you live? I know the general arts category for my region has a deadline that is like two weeks away. The earliest deadline was December 15th…

Mailed a form for a collection of poems on Thursday. I seriously hope they made it in time, seeing as I missed the original deadline and they were probably postmarked the same day as the extended deadline. >_>

@ArtsyGirl well I don’t have anything to submit even if it wasn’t past the deadline. I’m just hearing about this and it’s something I’m interested in.

But Iive in the Midwest and I’d probably submit either a flash fiction or a short story, and possibly poetry/song lyrics.

@efeens44 Register and see what your deadline is. You can always write something over winter break. It is absurdly competitive to get the highest honors, but great on your resume if you do (I am hoping to this year, since I made it to the national level last year but did not win). Good luck/let me know if you have any more questions.

I’ve always wanted to do this, but don’t you have to pay to submit?

Never mind, the Georgia deadline is passed… sigh
