reddit copyright!! Just kidding. How many units do they require you to take a semester? Are the classes ridiculously difficult?

@hopingtoxfer

Full-time status is set at 13 sem. units.

I don’t want to scare people but honestly I felt that classes here were much more difficult than at my CC.

The midterms are cumulative with some classes having 2-3 midterms throughout the semester, and are all free response (at least the classes I took were). The final exams were quite long and difficult, reflecting why all Berkeley finals are 3 hours long.

My only warning to transfer students is that you should be prepared to not be prepared. By this I mean that even though you might be one of the top students at your CC, they do not prepare you for schools like Cal (at least in my case and many other transfers that I’ve met).

What type of housing did you choose? If dorms, what can you tell us about them? How was it meeting people? What would you say the general age of the transfers were?

@ucbhopeful16

I’m living in an off-campus apartment so I couldn’t tell you the specifics of dorm life. All I’ve heard is that many of the dorms are pretty old and nothing special.

Meeting people is actually really easy, this is mostly due to required discussion classes for every lecture called “section”. These are smaller classes of students that a GSI from the department runs.

There’s also many organizations/events where you can meet more people. Students from clubs/organizations will go to the classrooms every morning and write on the chalk boards details about their upcoming events. Also there are tons of things going on at Sather gate everyday.

Most transfers I’ve met are around 21-24.

I’m a Mol Bio major at UCSD finishing up my first quarter. Did you take any labs this quarter? I just finished my first UD bio lab here at UCSD and I’m sweating bullets because I was right at 90% prior to the final and now I’m just waiting for the grades to be posted. What was your schedule this semester?

Do you get fin aid?

Are the girls hot??

How many hours per week do you study at Cal? Is it significantly higher than your time at a cc?

Did you take any labs this quarter? What was your schedule this semester?

I only had one lab and it was for lower division physics. I’ll have two labs next semester. Schedule was physics/bio/ac requirement/random one unit lecture class.

Do you get fin aid?

Yea I have financial aid.

Are the girls hot??

Depends on what your into. My honest opinion is that really hot girls are pretty rare. Lot’s of cute asian girls though.

How many hours per week do you study at Cal? Is it significantly higher than your time at a cc?

Hard to say really because after the first round of midterms the exam dates were split so I would only study for whatever midterm was coming up. But it’s definitely a lot more than at my CC with all of the reading/projects/essays/physics hw etc.

Some students here are really intense and study A LOT with very little sleep for 5-6 days a week then catch up on sleep the 7th. Just like any other school though there’s a lot of procrastination, especially since at Cal the 15th week is called dead week and you get the whole week off to study for finals.

Do you consider free respons exams to be harder than multiple choice? Any idea why they would make it free response?

I hope I didn’t skim over this answer already but how many units did you take? Just curious because of the semester system.

Do you consider free response exams to be harder than multiple choice?

Definitely.

Any idea why they would make it free response?

Because they are trying to make you apply information, not regurgitate it. Sometimes the answer to a question is “I don’t know” and then you would explain what information you would need to know the answer.

I hope I didn’t skim over this answer already but how many units did you take? Just curious because of the semester system.

I took 13 units my first semester. I’m registered for 16 units for spring.

thanks for the answer kamelred. I’m going to ucla and all my exams have been free response as well. It’s definitely harder I saw the student store selling scantrons so I hope not all my classes will be the same test wise lol

@philosoup

Np and yes there is definitely MC courses at Cal, but I didn’t have any during my first semester.
