@ cJm2009: Welcome to the forum, fellow comm major =].

I got accepted a few weeks back. 3.49 gpa, no tag. I’m not sure if comm is impacted at SB but I only had 1 of the 4 prereqs finished.

that is fine. regardless of what else blue and gold is for, it is in fact for kids like myself who don’t easily qualify for calgrant because my parents both have their graduate degrees. when i read the specs for blue and gold it stated that you must apply for calgrant to qualify for blue and gold. i did not say that blue and gold was NEVER for anything, or anyone else. the student said he was from out of state and the point of my post was to make sure that he was in the calgrant system with a GPA listed. which he responded he was, so whatever your trouble is, it resolved that immediate issue. and if you feel the need to add to my posted information, by all means you are welcome. this is a forum for that purpose, not for acting like you are the authority. which in fact, is what you seem to be doing. everyone is on here trying to help each other, so just chill dude. hope we all get accepted into the schools of our choice. good luck.

Thank you & congratulations on your acceptance We’ll see what happens in these upcoming weeks. For now, I’ll enjoy the weekend and TRY to ignore the waiting game.

A little confusion over the Blue and Gold and my part. I am only eligible for a competitive Calgrant currently. I will probably not get one because after talking to a calgrant rep on the phone, it seems that my gpa will be a tad low. So, at this point I am qualified for the BAG program i believe and my unofficial letter states it on the top that I am eligible. Since these BAG grants take effect later in the year, how does that affect enrollment, finance disbursements, and living off campus? I was hoping to get some help with a deposit and first months rent, but It doesnt seem likely. My EFC is 3011, the amount of grant/scholarship award is 17900 with loans taking up another 10k or so per year. Any ideas, advice, or comments? Thanks!

^ if you are most concerned about a deposit (do they require one at UCSB for kids who are really poor?) then i would definitely email the financial aid office at the school. i sent them a note last week and they responded immediately. at my current school we are allowed to defer all the fees until our aid arrives providing that we qualify. they just deduct the fees before issuing checks. not sure how it will work with the deposit at UCSB if they require one. i had planned on using my current financial aid money for Spring 2012 to pay any required depsits. so i can imagine that you are concerned. the good news is you qualify for blue and gold!

UCSC noted a deposit in my admissions packet, but i do not see any deposit requirement listed on my UCSB page. do you know if there is a deposit required with the SIR? and how much it is? good luck!

Northbeach, thanks for the response, in a deposit I mean living off campus, getting situated and what not. I will just start getting it ready now. It’s just hard to save for a deposit on an apartment while youre paying rent and everything else. I suppose it can be done, I will just need to tighten the belt a little.

Just received my unofficial award letter from UCSB and I have to say that it is looking very nice. It is definitely a plus for UCSB towards my uc decision!

I’m assuming all the people here talking about Financial Aid applied awhile ago?

@ cJm2009: Thanks! Yeah, the best thing to do at this point for everyone is to not worry so much. It will all be over in about 2 weeks.lol. I’m sure you’re still in the running for SB since the pre-reqs don’t seem to matter that much. My gpa wasn’t great either so yeah.

@ People looking for off-campus housing:
I was searching for apartments on craigslist last night. I have to say that Davis looks awesome! The apartments there are soooo cheap! I found many 2 bdrm ~800sqft for less than $900! The extra room would make a great office/work space. And my gf said there are a lot of job opportunities for her in Sac town. I’m really hoping that I get accepted to Davis now =]. I looked for places in Goleta too and SB is just very expensive. The cheapest place I found were 1bdrms still in the 1100-1200 range. I’m still weighing the pros and cons of Davis and SB. And those places in Davis are like a mile away from campus too!

@ Iamsocal: Did you not apply for financial aid? I think the deadline was like March-ish. Did you fill out a FAFSA?

fafsa was done as soon it could be filed. gpa was sent the day it was due by my cc. I am waiting on a calgrant to determine, but I will most likely SIR to UCSB if I dont get into UCLA. I may have a place to live rent free or minimal rent in LA, so that would be great. Other than that, barring any surprise acceptances from super reach schools, I will be in SB this fall.

Has anyone found out why our financial aid award shows off campus when we put down on campus in our fafsa application?

@norcaltransfer
no kidding! the school i attend now gives us half of our financial aid four weeks before the semester is over. it is so stressful and my parents have been good about helping me, but what about kids with no parents? or parents who don’t help them at all? money is such an important component of going to school and getting good grades. oh well, at least we have calgrant, blue and gold, and the amazing UC system. otherwise i would be in big trouble. really tired of starving while attending classes. oh, and when i checked with the school board in 2009 i was informed that technically the schools can release funds to students ten days before school starts, and legally must release funds before the last day of school. but my school releases funds the second day of school (after it starts!) and then again four weeks before the semester ends.

@philosoup
someone posted on one of these forums that financial aid defaults to ‘off campus’ and switches to ‘on campus’ later, after the award is official. not sure if that is true for everyone, but the poster said they had called the school about it. i have sent them emails (UCSB financial aid) and they sent me a really speedy and nice response.

@northbeach thank you. I’m deaf so I can’t call them myself.

@ Philosoup: Yeah, northbeach is right and Chelz was the one who called. But if you look at the top of the page, it says that it is an “unnoficial financial aid” award. So it won’t be finalized until you SIR.

iDizzle, nah, I didn’t apply for any financial aid.

@idizzle oh okay. thanks dude

Who else is at ucsb open house?

how is it?

Its chill, I got a tour, lecture, and free stuff. Eating at ucenn now
