didn’t recognize any questions from past tests. i only looked through a couple past exams though

Does anyone have an Answer Key to this year’s 2012 Open test (even if “unofficial”, perhaps done by a past finalist?) If so, I would greatly appreciate if you could either post or pm it to me. I know that all the results have now been sent.

rupnok?
cadaeibfed? (you said you earned a 37 before scores ever went out so surely you must have had some sort of version of an ans. key)
oldguy33?
james584?
NightShadeQueen?

Anyone???

Thanks!

^ the answers are put together by me a few (or more) pages back based on answers compiled in this thread.

Just a request. I’m looking for the answer key for 2009 semi-final.

Thanks.

BTW, after the semi-final, I will give anyone any test that I have and they want, as my S will be finished with the USABO. I will not give it prior to then, so please wait :-)

im also looking for semifinal answer keys. i have all past opens and all past semifinals pm me

Hi, Crazymomster, I am new here and so happy to see your offer. I am looking for semi and open tests. Could you send me a cope of what you have?

emblem101…is a ■■■■■…the comments made should not be trusted

last year, we agreed to trade for the 2011 semifinal exam. i upheld my end of the bargain, except emblem101 never followed through. this is a public courtesy announcement: do not listen or trade with emblem101. this person also attempted to get test answers from others last year before having taken the test. just goes to show you that you should refrain from discussing the test with anyone until at least 2 weeks after 3/31 (last year my school took it after the official cutoff due to mandatory state testing).

pm me if you have any semifinal answer keys or the 2011 semifinal exam

I’m a usabo enthusiast who’d like to find out if just read the campbell book for bio honors would help do well on the usabo olympiad ( first round ) ? Please let me know.

ccer222 is a liar. I refused to trade last year’s semifinal exam to him and now he is making stuff up in some odd sense of revenge and justice. Last year, I actually discussed the semifinal exam with ccer222 without any problems, I can provide the transcripts of the conversations if need be, though that would cause needless furor in this thread. I took the test on the 1st day this year and early in the exam period last year since my school’s spring break is earlier than most states since I live down south. If anybody wants to discuss this year’s semi, I can prove that I took the test.

@ numbersense

For the open exam and even the semifinal exam, Campbell’s Biology is enough. However, it all depends on how much information you absorb through your reading of Campbell, your understanding of the text. People have made Finals while in biology honors or no biology course at all. It depends on how much work you are willing to put into this competition.

all,

i take back what i mentioned earlier (somewhat hotheadedly) about emblem101. this morning he did indeed uphold his end of the deal, and is someone that can be trusted.

good luck to everyone on the semis!

(note that we should still refrain from discussing until at least 2 weeks after the deadline for mailing in exams. please also limit your private discussions so as not to give anyone an undue advantage).

To everyone in the thread, please ignore the above exchange between ccer222 and myself. There was a misunderstanding that is now resolved.

hey guys,

i was looking at a grad school course test, and one of the questions i couldn’t get is listed below:

Which of the following is NOT an example of operant conditioning?
Choose one answer.

a. Food is presented to starved pigeons every 15 seconds regardless of their actions. One pigeon was found to be constantly turning clockwise. Another was found to constantly stick its head through the upper corners of the cage.

b. A light switch in a room no longer works. A toddler no longer flips the switch when entering the room.

c. Food drops into a cage when a lever is pushed. A rat continuously pushes on the lever.

d. A nurse says to a toddler, Now this wont hurt a bit just before giving him a shot. The toddler recoils the next time he hears This wont hurt.

e. Cows avoid electric fences after being shocked.

does anyone know the answer?

The answer would be (A) because it is rewarding them regardless of their actions instead of conditioning them to present a certain action due to a certain stimulus

I agree with emblem101. Operant is when certain behavior is modified due to consequences, and all of them show that except for A, in which food is presented regardless of what the pigeons do.

This post is for michaelzhu93 (though something tells me I might not get a reply) but just wondering - why do you offer to help people with no apparent attempt to follow through? I mean, I take people at their word (or at “face value”) just as I try to be true to my word. And you posted offers to help so I took the time to write you DETAILED and very polite requests (one a week ago, one yesterday) asking if you can help in the way you offered in your posts, but although I see you were on CC as recently as 2 hours ago, I have not received any reply from you. I would pm you again, but figure you seem to prefer public posts. I still hold out hope that you will eventually reply back to me even if it’s just to say that you are “too busy right now, but will follow through as soon as you are able”. That would be most appreciated. Thanks. (My apologies to anyone else reading, though if this posts helps others to only offer help they are willing to follow through with, then maybe I saved others a lot of grief and effort).

Also, can others please pm if this poster helped you, or if you were similarly hoping for a reply which never came? Again, PM is preferred in this case.

Oh, by all means, if michaelzhu93 does pm me positively and follows through, I will certainly update my public posts to reveal such. :-)

for those of you who have already taken the semi this year, is 2 hours enough time or did you feel some time crunch? any speculation on how much time to allot for section C?

Everyone is given the same amount of time for the exam. Make use of it as best you can.
Time management is an important skill, particularly once you reach IBO.
