2012 USABO Thread

Interested to know what questions were seen as poorly written.
I thought this exam was also far too easy, but I’ve been wrong once this year.

Yeh sorry about that heyitstony. The only reason that I asked about those two madeup questions is because sandsoftime PMed me them to me. I wasn’t sure about them being on the test since I took it more than a week ago but I asked you about them anyway.

To all, if anybody PM’s you asking to discuss the the semifinal exam and they provide either a mitochondrial gene question or a glucose transport question as proof, don’t listen to them. Two people that have done this are sandsoftime and nairs02. Both have few or no posts and they have only recently registered.

I don’t know if you can call them poorly written but some where definitely almost ambiguous, weirdly not poorly written.

i don’t know about far too easy, but i thought it wasn’t bad. However, it was def much harder than previous years imo. def some ambiguous q’s

lol, this test, was like hard. A lot of guessing for me.

Agree with darksigma, much, much harder than last year, but probably a more appropriate difficulty level for a semi exam. Some questions were ambiguous, but I’d say the test as a whole was more coherent than, say, two years ago.

Does anyone know the approximate time results should come out? When did they come out last year, and is everyone notified or only those that moved on?

Yeah, I just took the exam yesterday, pretty late. Overall it was pretty difficult (especially the beginning of part A i think) but then it leveled out for the rest of the test. Anyone who read beyond Campbell’s has a fair shot. Results might be out on the 21st, with finalists notified beforehand.

According to the USABO website, scores and cutoffs will be posted to the website on April 23.

^ frequently dates get changed however, so don’t be surprised if the date is later.

About when does CEE contact the finalists?

per the calendar… about april 23rd… but don’t count on that date.

Looking at past years USABO finalists have usually been notified about one week before results come out per the CEE scheduled release date. So for this year it should be around April 16 if you made Finals.

Hmm looks like last year the finalists got emails about a week before the official results came out… this is just from looking at last year’s thread. i would review previous year’s comments (especially NightShadeQueen an IBO gold medalist) to gather some knowledge from experienced people.

how much was part C worth and is it possible to do well without doing part C? I thought I did reasonably on the multiple choice and finished the multiple choice but ran out of time after that…

Okay, thanks emblem and tigertwist!

I both want and don’t want to see the results sooner… Last year’s cutoff was 93 out of 150 possible points, correct?

Wait so that means Part C was worth 30 points? Also, I remember reading on the instructions this year that Part B problems would be worth 2 points, don’t know if they’ll actually do it though.

I think I remember it was out of 150 last year, but I’m not sure.

I’m almost certain that last year’s exam was out of 160 points. Last year, part A and B were both worth 1 point each, and part C was worth 40 points total.

Do you think this year’s part C will be worth 40 points? Any predictions for the cutoff score?

Well according to the USABO instructions this year Part A was worth 1 point per question so a total of 60 points. Part B was 2 points a question so 120 total points. And it said that Part C was worth a variable number of points. So the total points could be anywhere above 180 depending on how much Part C was worth.
