2013-2014 Applicants and their parents.....

D submitted her app on 6/24 after spring grades came in. So she may not be verified until August at this rate.

It would be nice if she could get some interviews in during September before fall quarter starts around 9/23.

Quarters go fast anyway and to take 3 days out during a week for one interview in the east or midwest is going to be hard.

This is 4 years old (and an MD/PhD applicant so no idea if it’s different for secondaries - i know the interview/acceptance timelines are different) but thanks to the wonders of gmail’s large storage I figured i’d post my timeline for those curious to see one. I’m not going to name the schools I applied to (other than UCSF since I already mentioned it):

AMCAS Submission notification: 6/29 7:01pm
1st secondary received: 6/30 10:21am (not even 15.5 hours later, doubt they read anything on my AMCAS)
2nd received: 7/01
3rd: 7/01
4th: 7/07
5th: 7/14
AMCAS Processed: 7/20 4:27pm
6th: 7/20 7:05pm
UCSF’s notification of pre-screening: 7/21
7th: 7/21
8th: 7/21
9th: 7/21
10th: 7/21
11th: 7/21
12th: 7/21
13th: 7/21
14th: 7/21
I don’t think all the above schools coincidentally read my application within 24 hours of it being processed
The ones below that took 1 week or more probably actually looked at it - whether or not it’s truly “screened” I don’t know.
15th: 7/28
16th: 7/28
17th: 7/28
18th: 7/29
19th: 7/30
20th: 8/4
21st: 8/5
22nd: 8/11
23rd (sort of, they actually had no secondary so this was just notification of receipt of all materials): 8/26

My son got 2 more secondaries today and he is not verified yet. I think AMCAS did things differently this year by transmitting some of the applicants’ information to schools before verification, to make up for the lost time because of their “technical” difficulties.

PS: Based on IWBB’s post above, I guess it is “business as usual” with AMCAS.

DD submitted on 6/10 in the morning but her transcript was not marked as received until 6/12. Not verified yet and said that AMCAS states they are still working on those from 6/10. Who knows when to expect it to verified.

Receiving secondaries before being verified is normal. Per AMCAS’ Facebook page:

“Some of you may have received a secondary application (or two!) before your AMCAS application has completed verification. As of June 28th, medical schools have contact information for applicants who’ve submitted their AMCAS application even if it hasn’t been verified. Some schools don’t screen applicants before sending secondary applications.”

The last known AMCAS verification, according to that other site, is **Submitted 6/11/13 10:33:14 AM ET, Transcripts Received 5/28/13, Verified 7/1 2:00 p.m.
**. Your daughter is not that far off…

How does this early transmission without verification impact the screening process at some schools?

In reviewing this chart that was posted on another thread, I noticed that there are several schools that have an exceptionally low percentage of female applicants and/or matriculants. I wonder if it would be strategic for D to submit her app to a couple of these schools:

https://www.aamc.org/download/321442/data/2012factstable1.pdf

Only if she fits in with the mission of the school and would be happy to attend if accepted.

I mean if she wouldn’t want to attend–why waste her money on applying?

She (or you) would also need to check to see if there are other factors in play. For example, many of the schools that seem to have the lowest number of female applicants/matriculants (Nevada, Hawaii-Burns, Alabama, Kentucky, UCLA, GA-Mercer, LSU etc) also have very strong in-state preferences.

Agree, WOWM, and she would only apply if she liked it. It was pointed out on the other site that UT Houston has about the same number of female applicants as the other TX publics yet has an unusually low number of female matriclants in comparison to the others. (I have no clue what the percentage of females who apply are actually accepted.). I wonder why?

Based on the numbers, I would say more are going to Baylor or Southwestern since the numbers going there are 5% more than the applicants.

Personally, I think UT Houston might be on par or superior to both those schools but the rank does not reflect it.

D just received her first II! WooHoo! She was assigned Aug. 2nd – the very first day. At least she’ll still be home and not back at school so she can drive rather than having to fly across country.

I assume this is an interview? Congrats!

Yes, texaspg, she got an interview invite! It’s in our home state. I’d love for her to come back home. She’s been far away for college, and I miss her. We’ll see where God leads her. :)

When does her college start? Someone last year finished 5 or 6 interviews in tx by Sept 20th before college started.

Congratulations! What you once thought hysteria, can morph into excitement, can’t it? Hopefully the early bird gets …

She has to be back around the 12th, I think. I’m doubtful she’ll have any more between the 2nd and 12th, but it’d be nice. She’s arranged her school schedule where she has M and F off this fall and doesn’t have class until later on Tues so she can travel. How on earth she’s going to do this while cheering is beyond me. The good news, I suppose, is that she won’t have to go to all the away games.

Thanks, kal123!

Congratulations to your D on the II!

Now the craziness really begins… (Hang on tight. It’s a real roller coaster ride!)

That is going to be hard if she is leaving on 12th. It sounds like she is not that close to home which means she may need to make several trips back?

From what I heard, TX schools pick different days to interview so they don’t invite someone on the same day. I am not certain if no one does it on days between Monday and Friday.
