2013-2014 Applicants and their parents.....

"He will have completed 4 interviews before Oct 15th. It would make it a lot easier to plan the rest, if he ends up with an acceptance or two on Oct 15th. "
-Let’s hope for the best here. D’s 2 interviews before Oct 15th resulted in 2 acceptances on Oct. 16 (the funny part was that one interview was literally couple days before acceptance). D. has applied to 7 schools. None beyond 5.5 hours driving distance, she never stayed in hotels either, always with the Med. student host, we did not spend whole lot at all.
Good luck to everyone interviewing or…not yet, it is still pretty early and some schools seem to wait for acceptances by others to invite to interview (this was the feeling when my D. got acceptances that seem to trigger aditional interviews)

I thought the other schools didn’t know where an applicant has been accepted until sometime in the spring, when AAMCAS opens up this information. (I suppose so the schools can decide to which candidates they want to award scholarships or grants, seeing which candidates other schools want and for whom they’ll have to sweeten the pot).

D has three interviews before classes start and the rest scheduled for either a Monday or Friday, days she purposely left free on her schedule of classes.

But yes, an acceptance or two on Oct. 15 and then she could withdraw from schools she’s less interested in.

…no scholarships, no grants, there are PhDs, lawyers, Masters of Science from the top programs…etc. in front of mere Summa Cum Laudes freshly graduated from UG…

Reading SDN and MDApps, I’ve seen many students who won scholarships to several big name medical schools. Usually they are not full scholarships but they are significant.

D1 (UG degree only) received two scholarship offers last year, both substantial (full IS tuition; OOS tuition brought down to IS level) and several need based grants. She also knew people that got significant scholarships to schools like UChicago & Penn w/o advanced degrees.

Yes, and UCLA has the new Geffen scholarships. 33 recipients of full tuition scholarships based on merit.

I believe Penn has 35 full tuition scholarships. I am assuming these are mostly for medical schools.

Well, for all those in the trenches, or about to be, hang in there. My kid is on the other side of the game this year and has a newfound respect for the work, dedication, and commitment of adcom members. ;)

Wow, curm is back!

I’m never that far away. I’m like the NSA. ;)

Last time we talked, you were on deathbed. No one responded when I asked for an address to check on you!

D’s Med. School Adcom called her pre-med advisor expressing their desire to have her and her classmate (who eventually has chosen another Med. School) as their MS1 and apologised for not offerring Merit awards because of very high caliber of incoming MS1 in that year. Another Med. School (state public) offerred Merit award but it was so insignificant, that it did not make any dent in D’s decision choosing her Med. School.
Congrats to all of those who got Merit awards at Med. School. We did not expect any and it was enough that D’s UG was tuition free, so we urged her not based her decision on a price tag, we felt that she deserved to be where she truly wanted to be.

MrP might be DrP soon enough. I had a very positive first interview and feel real giddy.

Best of luck to all those who have interviews coming up soon!

^ Good for you, mrpenguin. Congratulations on a good interview. I hope you will hear the good news on Oct 15th.

Cornell interview invite came in for my son. If anybody else is waiting on Cornell, don’t be concerned. They still have plenty of dates open in October, including Oct 1st. That’s yet another indication that the season is still young and no reason to lose hope just yet.

ooh la la. Now we have finally reached name dropping territory Mr. Kal. No where to go but up!

Hello Dr. Penguin.

Congrats on the Cornell interview kal! Was one of son’s top choices a few years back, he loved it after his interview…fantastic facilities! One of the best anatomy labs (if not the best) he saw during his interview trips (in his mind better than H’s).

And yippee for all the interviews rolling in, it is so very exciting! Son is in the middle of his sub-i of infectious disease and is tired, early in, late out.

Good luck!

Kat

Tex, I’m a little superstitious and don’t want to count my eggs before they’ve hatched, but I had such a positive experience. (The only negative was the lingering smell of formaldehyde on my suit from our brief foray into the anatomy lab.) Here’s to good news in a few weeks!

Congrats on Cornell invite to Kal’s S!

D is at her third interview today. She has one in-state interview coming up, silence from the other six in-state schools.

If I’d thrown darts at her list, those throws would have been as good as my guesses as to where she’d get interviews. It just seems so random. The two rejections have been from schools that have lower average stats than hers, so I suppose that’s no surprise.

29 schools, 7 interviews, 2 rejections, 20 - silence.

Congrats to all.

I had an interesting interview week- had a long interview day ( 45-50 minutes 3 interviewers) at one place- At the end of the day I was dazed, and tired , not sure how I answered .

The next one was MMI type- interesting ,unique and long .

My other (high ranking schools) interviews are coming next couple of weeks - glad to get the interviews and very realistic about my chances of getting accepted…
