2013/2014 Audition day review

@halflokum There is definitely something to be learned from every experience an actor has, I think.

@halflokum I donā€™t object to juries, hurdles, grades, whatever you want to call them. What I objected to with Emersonā€™s old system was that it seemed to be based on a quota - they could only move forward a certain number, so you could have no idea that you were in danger and all of a sudden just be asked not to continue. U of Arizona seems to operate this way as well. Seems like MT is hard enough without just making it a numbers game. Iā€™d like to know that if S is doing the work and making progress he wouldnā€™t land out in the cold. I agree that juries are a fine thing in letting you know how you stand, just like exams and final papers, and if you canā€™t pass muster that is a very different thing than them knowing that they have to cut 6 people regardless of how talented and hard working they are.

Just a quick Alert!! Son just finished Otterbein audition. Have sheet music with you! Though music is provided by student with MP3, the auditior (s)? asked for a copy of the sheet music of one of his songs to work with him on it. Iā€™m back home at work on my lunch break when husband let me know how the audition went. Luckily I packed sheet music too and son had it available to him. Son enjoyed the audition according to my brief text correspondence.

@zebrarunner, I donā€™t disagree about the quota thing. Thatā€™s a whole different animal. Glad that Emerson eliminated it.

Yes @entertainersmom! One of my students was asked for a 3rd song from his book at CCM unifieds which one of the faculty members played for him. He was so upset because he thought he forgot it but he checked his bag and it was there!

Yes! I emailed Otterbein and asked if they had an accompanist. I was told, yes, in case they ask for more but rƩcorded accompaniment to start. Thanks for the CCM heads up!

D did BoCo songs/monologues this morning (Chicago Unifieds) and is doing the dance call right now. This was her slow day with only one school scheduled. Sheā€™s doing auditions 5 days straight and today is the middle day, so we keep the schedule light today to save her voice and also to leave room for a walk-in if she wants to do one.

Her songs/monologues went great and she spent about 15 minutes with the BoCo adjudicator. Adjudicator was busy typing much of the time but when D introduced her second song the woman grinned and said ā€œBoy, I havenā€™t heard that one in a LONG time.ā€ She seemed pleased. They chatted a little bit about Dā€™s resume and training. It was more of an information-driven short interview rather than the casual ā€œtell me something unique about yourselfā€ kind of interview that NYU did yesterday. My D loved the adjudicator ā€“ very nice woman (I neglected to note her name but D probably remembers it.)

One thing fun about Unifieds is seeing some of the same students over and over again. Makes me wonder where everyone will end up, you know? At Roosevelt the other day one of the current students who was helping out said she and another one of the students in the room actually met last year at their audition and were so excited to discover they were both headed to the same place. Makes me smile and wonder about how these young men and womenā€™s lives will connect in the future ā€“ whether in college or in a production someday. This is such a wonderful beginning place and Iā€™m sure my D and so many others will look back at this audition experience with nostalgia someday. And I think the parents will too. I think it was @MTMajorCook who said that after the first few auditions, things calm down a bit. We are finally feeling that, and it feels really good. Two more days to go, and then itā€™s over for us! It will be nice to focus on other things in life again while we wait for results.

Entertainersmomā€¦ Iā€™m almost positive now that I saw your S and H. My D auditioned 2 after your S, and I remembering him asking for his book from the room. (Based on that, my D took the whole book in). However, instead of more songs, they asked her for some stylized dance from a bullet on her resume!

Kategrizz, I bet you did see them! I was in contact via text message during my lunch. I was so surprised as I was the master planner and had no idea there might be an accompanist when they are instructed to bring their own music device. Phew that they had the bag with all the essentials. Son really, really enjoyed the audition.

@MTMajorCook and @entertainersmom - any idea how many straight acting auditioners there were at Otterbein auditions? My D auditioned there for straight acting in December and also fell in love with Dr John and the program. She loves that the acting and MT programs work so well together.

AMothersLove - I want to say 10 or less at this Saturdays on campus audition. The list I have is MT only and there are 28 on it. Acting checked in a hour later and it definitely wasnā€™t a full room like it was at 8. I wanted to ask about stats but ran out of time at the meeting.

I am so behind on the audition reviews! Obviously things are a bit crazy at Unifieds, but I am going to do a quick update on UCF, which was 2/1 (seems like ages ago).
Audition starts early (7:30-8) with check-in and paperwork. Heads up for those auditioning on 2/22, D was asked for song that contrasted with what she sent in via accepted on the prescreen. Since UCF only requires one song for prescreen, we could not remember which one she sent inā€¦there is no way to pull it up on accepted once it has been submitted. They did not ask for a monologue for the on campus audition. So basically, you are in the room singing 16 bars and you are out. She felt the dance call was well within her abilities and dance is not her strength. She was done for the day by 12:30. There was an information session and students available to do tours or answer questions.
Unified updates to comeā€¦we are having a blast- but last night she started coming down with a coldā€¦Eeeeek!

@frazzled35 - sending good thoughts your way that your D gets through the rest of auditions without getting too sick. These kids encounter so many different germs traveling to auditions itā€™s almost impossible to stay healthy through the whole process. We have Airborne and tea stockpiled at our house! lol

Oh no, frazzled!! Sending healthy vibes! Why have I not seen you?? Oh yeah, itā€™s crazy here and Iā€™m holed up in the roomā€¦

Healing thoughts to your D Frazzled!!

Hoping your D feels better soon, frazzled!!

Have your D take Zicam RapidMelts immediately! Thereā€™s a CVS across the street. Hopefully thatā€™ll help. Do your best not to touch your face, kids. Itā€™ll help tremendously.

Day 4 in Chicago: Reporting on BoCo dance call, CMU, and Ithaca.

BoCo dance call was Dā€™s favorite part of auditions to date. She absolutely loved every part of it. And while weā€™ve heard it was quite intense, it was not too difficult. D canā€™t say enough about how awesome it was.

The Carnegie Mellon audition took the full 4 hours for my D, though there was a lot of waiting. I think they call kids in based on the order in which they check in at the desk that day, so get there early if you want to be done in 3 hours rather than 4.

As far as the audition was concerned, D was first called into the singing portion with Gary. He listened to her two song choices and then asked if she knew another random song. D kind of knew it and gave it a try (the accompanist Mark is amazing and he shouted out the lines and indicated how the melody went) and D made the best of it and really had a blast with that even though she didnā€™t really know the song well. Gary said ā€œI think the acting team is going to find you very interestingā€ and he sent her to Barbara. Barbara listened to Dā€™s 2 monologues, asked for a third, and then asked her to sing something a capella. D chose her belt song and Barbara like that. They chatted a bit, then Barbara wanted Kaf to hear D, so D went to see Kaf. Kaf read the notes from Gary and Barbara, then asked for a couple specific things from D for her to perform (one song and monologue number 3). They chatted a bit too.

They were all absolutely lovely and wonderful and very affirming. Barbara told D that she was a wonderful actor and that is something that D will take with her forever, no matter what happens.

D was almost late to Ithaca because of being held late at CMU, so things were a little frazzled there, unfortunately, and D was scheduled to be the first one for Ithaca, so there was no time to reprogram before having to be ā€œonā€ again. It was an unfortunate timing situation and these things just happen sometimes. D was a bit frazzled but did her best. Afterward she lamented that she didnā€™t feel like she was able to show them who she really was, so that was not the greatest, but she did her best under the circumstances. She was sad because she really loved our visit to Ithaca, but thatā€™s the way the cards fell on this one. I think she probably did just fine and managed to hide the fact that she was in a bit of a panic at the moment. Hoping so. And trying to remember that she will love the school that loves her.

I will go into detail about my Dā€™s auditions later, but I wanted to add that my D also loved the BoCo dance call. She said you could really tell that the dance instructor loved her job. She made the dance call a lot of fun.

D had two final auditions today ā€“ the last of ten. Penn State and Pace. Both went really well. Both had fun dance calls. Both had quick singing/acting portions. D felt great about them both. Penn State loved her boots and talked about them during the monologue, which only threw D for a split second. Paceā€™s Amy Rogers said they got 900+ prescreens and said no to about 200, so theyā€™re seeing 700 in person auditions. Pace didnā€™t have them do monologues because of time pressures, but Amy assured the students that they can see the acting ability in the songs.

And now we are done. I am so proud of my kid! And she canā€™t wait to eat dairy at breakfast again. We fly home tomorrow. I have a feeling this place will be a ghost town tonight.
