Harvard Is Monday!

wow yeah just realized all the biosciences at Harvard are due soon… what do you guys think about this year’s graduate admission process compared to the previous years’?

I’m going to just about make the deadlines, got to pressurize a few faculty members to send in their LOR’s. But my transcripts are going to reach them late! Is that ok? Because I’ve already uploaded the transcripts. What do you guys think?

I have another doubt. I nominated 4 universities when I wrote the GRE, TOEFL back in June, 2012 (the 4 free recipients you’re allowed). I have completed their applications now and am wondering if I have to do some follow-up. Do I have to contact ETS or the universities regarding this? Clueless about this.

hsp104: you should contact the schools, just to make sure that everything is received by the schools.

If you’ve already submitted your applications, most schools will state whether or not they have received your official gre scores on the application website if you log onto your account. Otherwise I would call them.

You can check your application status online.

All of my schools had the 1/3rd December deadline. And one is still showing GRE not received. The ETS website says that this last one got sent 11/23 so I hope they wouldn’t blame me if it got there a little late…
This school says they want to receive all materials, including the mailed ones before deadline, though.
Good luck everyone with the wrap-up!

I think schools are generally not upset if they get your GRE scores and recommendations past the deadline. You can call and ask, though. Maybe some schools actually throw out applications after the deadline. I would doubt it, though.

Thanks CSCmeta! I heard from them about a week after submitting my app

@hsp104. I sent my transcripts 2 weeks ago and most of the schools have not confirmed whether or not they have received them. I called the schools today and most of them have so much mail coming in they haven’t had time to sort through everything. I’m sure if you have it post-marked before the deadline you should be fine. You could also check to see how your transcripts are sent out- mine is USPS first class mail and gets to its destination by 3 days. Many of the schools won’t have time to go through all of the mail before the deadline so I wouldn’t worry!

I sent all my GRE scores almost 2months ago, and some schools still show not received. That worries me a lot.

FWIW MicroB, I had GRE scores sent two weeks ago, and it took until yesterday for some schools to register.

I have heard anecdotally that GRE scores are simply made available to the schools electronically once you “send” them, and that delays are just tied to them matching them with the application. I am surprised you have more than one school in this boat.

Either way, I think that many schools will be okay with your self-reported score if the GRE scores are still being matched or delayed; obviously it is still worth checking with the school first, and then ETS if needed.

BeakerBreaker:If they dont match my files on time, I dont think it is a good sign. it’s prob considered as incomplete even I have self-reported my scores and they would prob throw my files into the trash can immediately after the deadline.

@MicroB2012, you seem very worried about that. Why don’t you email the schools and see what they say?

BambooPanda: I called some schools, and also emailed some other schools. most of them does not respond to my Emails. When I called, they said they couldn’t tell me because there were too many similar inquiries. What can I do?

@MicroB2012, I’m not sure. I wish I knew the answer to that one.

There is no program that will throw your application in the trash immediately after the deadline if it’s not complete.

You must complete the online portion of the application by the deadline. You should also send your scores and transcripts, and encourage your letter-writers to submit on time. But your application is not required to be complete by the deadline – the deadline is a submission/postmark deadline. It will take programs a few weeks to sort through the pile of application material.

Many programs that have early December application deadlines will not distribute applications to faculty readers until the week between Christmas and New Year’s or later.

The year I applied, I had trouble with my GRE scores not getting to one program, and one of my LORs not getting to another (both early December deadlines). In the first case, the program extended me an interview offer based on my self-reported scores, and just asked that I send another score report before I came for the interview weekend in late January. In the second, the program contacted my recommender and asked that he get his letter in by Jan 3, and he faxed another copy of the letter.

Check to ensure that your materials have arrived at schools, for sure, but don’t panic if it’s mid-December and some of the application pieces haven’t arrived yet.

molliebatmit: Thanks a lot. your information def gives me a great relief. So far I can tell that my online application, three ref letters and transcripts are received. It is just the GRE scores that are bothering me now. According to some programs, they actually said that incomplete application files will not be reviewed. I don’t if it is true. I am sure these programs get a lot of application files, do you think maybe they will only look at the app files that are completed?

@biotechstudent: Yeah, I think that transcripts and GRE scores reaching a little late are alright. I was concerned because some scores must have been sent in June! Those colleges will probably have to be prompted to match my application with the score they must have received a long time back.
