2013 Dartmouth Transfers - Accepted and Going

@CrawfishRicky, @notmeantforivy
sent you guys the link!

no news for anyone, right? I figure that they (like seemingly most years ) already have spaces, but aren’t going to start perusing the 30 person waitlist until after some extension-given students officially accept their offers (e.g. tornado victims/abroad) and they’re totally done with the reg d waitlist. so prolly this week they start.

Does anyone know how frequently they use the transfer waitlist?

Has it been used in previous years?

I went over this pretty in depth. They use it pretty much every year except once or twice in the last 7 years. They don’t do any form of academically ranked waitlist, the ones who get off seem to be the ones with unique majors (e.g. a student got off a couple years ago even after Dartmouth “officially” said that they werent using the waitlist, and he was an Asian Studies major) or students who pursued accordingly before the deadline or had some hook (e.g. Dartmouth Department Chair rec, key alumnus, etc)

My mother asked last week, they’re using it barring extraneous circumstances. So…if you did the right things, you should have a good shot. Keep in mind probably 15/30 of the waitlist didn’t actually do anything other than press yes.

Thanks for the response! In those years, do you happen to know roughly how many waitlisted candidates were admitted?

I don’t think that’s accessible info, nor is it relevant. I’d hazard a guess at 3, with some years taking more (e.g. This year).
Honestly, with a waitlist size of 30 students its clear you already have a good shot, but if you don’t have that x-factor you probably have no chance. Ad you can definitely make your own defining factor…just, you had to d it a couple weeks ago, no?
Gl, let us know. I’d expect a response this week.

Nvm we won’t know for at least another full week I guess. Also, here’s a fun trick- the number of waitlist acceptees seems to be directly correlated with the number of students taken off the waitlist that spring, something backed up by a report from admissions last year. The only year they didn’t take anyone off one waitlist was the year they didn’t use the other waitlist.

They’re taking more students this spring waitlist than any other waitlist in a long while, so I’d remain calm and optimistic I’d you have reasons for doing so. It also appears from reports of accepted students off the transfer waitlist that it is largely done by intended major (as reported by a student a couple years ago), which makes sense at a school that small.
And like I said, given past years there’s little chance we hear back this week but who knows, deff not till later

freefly I called admissions last week and the lady told me that people were given extensions till the end of last week so if they decide to use the wait list, we will not hear back till the END of June.

There are already available spaces, so you are correct. They will begin looking at all the available candidates for admission, starting today (Monday), and we should start hearing back inten days or so. I think you’re putting a little too much stock in the equality of the process- they will have a clear idea of frontrunners (based on major and nonracial hooks) after their first read through.

With that being said, a few years ago the only two acceptances were given out in the last week of June, but that was a peculiar year for admissions (see '08 newsletters for more info)

Quick q- I guess you also were told that they do not start the process until they hear back from everyone? I was told that this is because they have enough on their hands with all the RD waitlist eyes that keeping count of the transfer list becomes impossible, so they just wait I hear back from everyone first

Yeah the lady said they wait to hear back from everyone. Also I called a couple weeks ago and talked to another guy who had said they were taking 50 kids off the freshman waitlist which had like 1000 kids on it. Not sure how relevant that is. Anyway, probably won’t get off the waitlist because I’m not at a peer school/no hooks but hopefully they give us all an answer in 2-3 weeks.

Yeah they’re taking 50 kids off the waitlist which is a HUGE number by their standards (I.e. 50 as opposed to 30 or 0 I mean). It’s very relevant, as they have a lot of flexibility in deciding on the transfer waitlist due to its small size. If they have space for students (logistically I mean, given dorms and Greek accommodations), they certainly can and will take a student off the t waitlist simply because they like him (see two years ago).
Like I’ve been saying, all signs point to a good haul for the transfers. So now we know that not having heard back anything is normal haha

And no I’m not crazy or unsocial just on bed rest after a big op :/

On, and did she give any hints as to the use of the waitlist? I recently called and was told it will most likely be used. Did you get a similar feeling?

She didn’t give any hints at all. She did make it seem that no one got off the waitlist last year though. Do you think we will hear back by June 15th? And also, do they notify you if you are not taken off the waitlist? I know some schools don’t even bother notifying.

Even if it is used but they only decide to take 1-3 kids off I don’t like the odds. If they decide however to take off 20 kids that’s a different story and i would have some real hope

@toofast the individual counselors have no clue as to how many students were taken off the waitlist any given year, unfortunately. It must have just been her tone; it looks like no transfers were taken two years ago and around 2 were taken last year.

I’m so hungry right now this is awful

If they take at least one I feel fairly comfortable (as that means I have a shot), any more and I feel confident. I’m fairly sure it’ll be around 5.

I’d like you to know that you’re dead wrong regarding the use of the waitlist given that I just received this as a response to the question, “As a currently waitlisted transfer hopeful, I was wondering if Dartmouth could provide an update on the likelihood that the transfer waitlist is utilized this year.”

Response:

“It is looking very doubtful that we will need to use our transfer waiting list. We should hopefully know for sure this week. We will keep you updated by email as soon as we have additional information to share with all of the students on our waiting list.”

Called and asked the same, was told that they’ll probably peruse the waitlist to take a couple students.
Maybe it’s that they don’t “need” to take more?
Who knows, we’ll know better in a few days

Also, my father just called (haha) and was told that they’re now debating whether or not to take any, and they currently have spaces open but they won’t know for sure for at least a week and offers will go out at the end of this month. I’m not sure who you talked
