2014-15 Season announced

Answering a parent’s question over in the drama forum:

The O’Malley Theater is not a black box theatre, that is the Miller Theatre. “The Theatre Conservatory’s Mainstage performance space is the O’Malley Theatre, a semi-thrust 210-seat venue presenting six productions and the Graduating Students Showcase each season. With a raised platform stage and vaulted seating, the theatre is equipped with a technical grid, catwalk, production booth, and optional elevated orchestra pit.”

The kids worship the set designer, Michael Lasswell, and Steven Kruse who do magical things with stagecraft.

They just announced their 2012-15 productions:
Putnam County Spelling Bee
Assassins
As You Like It
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
You Can’t Take It With You
Wild Party
and a few showcases, one of which is upper classmen-written short plays performed by the freshman acting students.
Not sure if there are other straight plays.

Freshman participate in a fall and spring showcase, then as sophomores and up all students are required to audition for all productions. CCPA has guaranteed casting per semester. And as upper classmen (with prior permission) they can audition in the Chicago community and the school actively seeks to get the students into internships in Chicago.

And yes, the showcase VIVID is performed in the gorgeous Roosevelt Auditorium and includes both Music Conservatory voice/opera major performances and Theatre Conservatory MT majors

Left one off: Picnic!

AND School for Scandal and Circle of Chalk. Sorry, D wasn’t very thorough with her list!

I think what the original poster meant was that the O’Malley Theatre is small, and yes, it is small compared to the main stage theatres we have seen at other universities. We are here at CCPA now and for those who visit, don’t expect to blown away by the size of the O’Malley theatre. One mom of a junior on our tour yesterday was almost downright rude on commenting about the size of the O’Malley. That being said, my D will pick her college based on the strength of the curriculum, the nuturing environment, the rigors of the training, the quality of the instructors, and the ability to make professional connections/have real world experience. She will not pick her school based on the size of the main stage theatre. But in all fairness to the original poster, O’Malley could be looked at as a EXTREMELY large black box if your black box holds 250 people. It’s painted black which gives it a black box feel. But since the training one gets at CCPA is intense and the people are wonderful, I wouldn’t judge a program by the size of its mainstage theatre.
