^But you are doing a wonderful job, ROCKFISHDG!

I second Hoggirl. Thanks to ROCKFISHDG (and others) who are taking this on.

Still waiting in North Texas…sigh…mail was just delivered no envelope here yet.

^^ Thanks guys!

To Hoggirl (sorry, I can’t message),
The college I’m talking about is Hendrix. They match and then some the Gov. Dist. Scholarship. I’ve heard the rumors about the # of GDS’s going doing too. Hope it’s not true. Still haven’t heard anything on the cutoff, but probably wouldn’t get a call from DS.
Thanks, realchk and everyone. I appreciate these forums so much!

Thanks again MDmom14…you are so kind! I keep watching for other Maryland posts. I’m wondering if MD cutoff could be 230? Amazing!!! Did your principal have any other info??? I couldn’t help but check, and saw that last year was a 219…could MD have jumped from 219 to 230???

Aaagh… just saw post on other thread that pa cutoff was 217. mine had 216. Already knew yesterday kid did not make it but one point… Anyone got some more salt for me to rub in this wound?? Tending to agree with other mom wishing kid had scored a 209 now (so long as SAT was still around 2160:)) Would have saved a lot of angst on my end not to mention wasted research on which generous national merit schools would have been good matches…

I hear ya ctl987. I have a feeling I am going to be in the same narrow-miss boat. We’ll see. I sure have learned a lot about the college admissions process in the past 6 months or so, though!

When my D took the PSAT, I thought it was purely a practice test. I had no idea that it was the NMSF qualifying test (or for that matter, what the real significance of being a Merit Scholar meant). Fortunately, she got a 2270 on the SAT. So, we’ve got that going for us.

ctl987 - Ughh. One measly point.

I was prepared for the worst after watching the upward trend this year and had pretty much convinced myself that a 217 wouldn’t make it. I think I’ve sprouted a few (more) gray hairs just today. I’m sure your child will do just fine and there are plenty of other opportunities out there for merit money.

But, yeah, one point stinks.

thanks everyone. Needed to vent and congrats to your kid chiro! My venting was in no way directed at the kids who did make it. Knowing you had a rough day today too chiro with the scores being so close and what we thought were relatively safe until the scores started rolling in well, my initial prediction was right. Kid was either going to just make it or just miss it. Which I figured out the first week in Dec., a period of well less than nine months. Maybe I should run tables next year on the scores and make some money on the side… ;)

19 kids at my S school made NMSF out of 240± … pretty amazing as it doubled from class of 2012

@univbound I think the only reason the go told me was because I specifically asked. She said their schools normal policy is to not announce until the press release goes out and won’t even officially tell any nmsf until 9/11. I can’t imagine the cutoff would jump so high though… Looks like the most any state jumped from last year on the other thread so far was +4 so I’d say worst case would be 223 for us. If say to give gc a call tomorrow and see if they give you any info if no other md posters provide any additional data between now and then. I noticed some counties seemed to post semi finalist info on their pages before press release last year but didn’t see any yet. What county are you in if you don’t mind sharing? You can email me at mdmom914@********** if you’d prefer.

Glad to see the score of 207 is good for AR. Gives me a little hope for DS’s 205. I’m taking some of the stress off by declaring I get a grande iced mocha–with real sugar!–for every day I don’t know the outcome by 3:00. Just had Mocha #2, and it was good!
Hoggirl, message me your email if you’d like and I can reply that way. I"m Class of '87!
This is a cool forum. I’m going to check out the rest of it in between 2-minute refreshes.
Thanks, y’all!

ctl987, we are right there with you - missed it by one doggone point! DS did the same two years ago too - ugh. Another similarity with your child is that as a soph, DD took it cold and scored 208, high enough to make it last year if she’d been eligible. This year, with preparation, she scored 209. We expected that she’d score much better as a junior between the prep and natural advancement. Ugh - now we are hoping the other stats (35 ACT) compensate when it comes to merit aid. At some point when the sting wears off, knowing that our kiddos are in the nation’s top 3% should sooth our souls!

Congrats to all those on the other side of the cut-offs!

Congratulations to all that made it. DD just missed. My rant: What makes it tough is though she is still eligible for company scholarship, first they look at the NMSF, which means some that scored lower than her will get first consideration, and if any openings are left over, then she will get consideration. We will see how it plays out. Fortunately, all other factors SAT, GPA are strong, so maybe it will all work out in the end.

Congratulations to those who made the cut!

sorry goherky. Think 35 will be very helpful for competitive aid. and padad. DEF frustrating situation for your family… and congrats to our known NMSF in the most competitive year either!!! looking forward to more scores coming in and more GOOD news.

KCTaxguy, that is impressive! Our school of 150/grade hasn’t had a NMSF in years, though we have had a few commended. NY historically has somewhat high cutoffs, but still. We’re hopeful that DD has done it this year, if the <=219 holds.

yeah, KC, that is amazing. Public or private if you’re up for sharing? And in one of the hardest years to make it. Very impressive. Is your son among the 19?
