Eeep I use facebook too much lol!
Chair2 makes a good point. However, it’s always safe to keep your facebook clean! I know my friend had her alumni interviewed facebook friend her lol. It’s not a big deal but it’s good to keep that in mind :]

^MEE TOOO. hahah. it’s a good form of communication though =] Honestly, most people I communicate with are people who live far away and people I don’t know THAT well. Like…I rarely talk with my best friends on facebook…I’d just pick up the phone and call/text them ya know?

I think they only check facebook if the applicant looks a little fishy/suspicious or something. Or if they’re just really really curious? haha. I’m sure it’s not commonly done. But yeah, keep your facebook clean is probably the best way to go.

Haha I heard about Princeton doing that too chair2…on CC I think! hahah

Harvard–Applying to a lot of the same schools are you are (not MIT or Harvard though)! But those are definitely my reaches haha. I’d say my list right now is mostly reaches just because I got a good safety and a few good matches that I really like.

I like Stanford’s supplement too…and Princeton’s! And of course Yale’s! UChicago’s is …interesting haha goodness knows how I’m gonna write an essay with those topics. We’ll see.

I looked up some of the school’s supplements from last year and I DO like UPenn’s 300 pg autobio essay question (pretty sure it’s on the supplement every year) and some of NYU’s short questions.

Most of the other supplements are pretty much the same…nothing special.

Ahhh I’m really excited to get started on all my essays/short answer things. Which reminds me, I’m gonna work on some essays today while I lay out by my friend’s pool…haha that’s probably a better use of my time than just chatting about anything and everything. I really want a rough draft of all my essays by the end of this summer (only 3 and a half weeks left…yikes!) so that way I can just edit edit and edit some more during the school year. I really don’t want to write any essays (unless I just come up with an amazing new idea) because there’ll be SO much going on senior year…

i’m so excited to be a senior! At the same time, though, i’m not too thrilled that high school is ending. i just don’t see myself s that old yet! lol
Anyone considering taking a gap year?

Hmm that’s an interesting question Harvard. I don’t really have that issue because most things I started in freshman/sophomore year, but personally I wouldn’t risk it. Sure I think the chances of them looking it up are very very small but what if for some reason they do? If someone caught you lying that would completely jeopardize your chances. I dk what your friend’s ECs are but who knows, maybe it would look suspicious? At any rate if I were in their position, I’d think I’ve worked too hard to potentially jeopardize my acceptance. Plus an extra year of yearbook or whatever can’t matter much right?

Anyway, done preaching! Hopefully that made sense, I got my wisdom teeth out this morning and the drugs haven’t completely worn off…

chair2- I disagree with Harvard1009. As my D (Yale class of 2013) will attest, gap year can be a wonderful way to clear focus after the helter skelter of college application. Indeed, after RD decisions are out, Yale sends out an inquiry to each admittee as to whether he/she wants to take a gap year.

The effect of a gap year depends on the person. You can’t really generalize.

I absolutely love the research I do. I don’t think I can write an essay about it, because I’m not sure how to go about making it interesting, haha, but I love it.

What would you get a PhD in, in addition to MD? You’ll be in school forever regardless or whether or not you want a gap year, with degrees like that…

Yeah, I know what you mean. I’ve worked with a bunch of PhD students this past year, all about to get their degrees, and it’s really intense. Their lives are literally consumed by the experiments and the work they have to do. It’s like that for pretty much every science PhD, so, something to consider.

krm–what did your daughter do for her gap year? i read in a yale article that the gap year students have an easier adjustment but find it a little harder to relate to students since they’ve already experienced the away-from-home maturing time a year before.

i’m seriously considering a gap year though, harvard1009! i really want to go abroad for a semester or so (i don’t think i’d last a whole year in a foreign country) to perfect my language skills, then maybe work near/around home or volunteer. basically, i just want a year to do what i want without homework, haha. only problem is to finance it and make sure i’m around other students so i don’t wilt away in isolation lol.

a few years ago i thought i’d be in school forever (i just see myself learning forever) so i figured i’d do some graduate degree program. now i’m rethinking it… thinking about being out in the real world seems kind of exciting (at least for now).

//\She worked at a school located abroad (don’t want to get more specific to preserve her privacy) for a year. She was self supporting, earning enough to pay for traveling in the region where she was located. She feels that living and traveling abroad for a year was a transforming experience.

yay! another scea yale from canada…
god i’m soooo nervous, i don’t know why i’m even hoping, i’m not neeearrrly as brilliant as the ppl i see on the site

crawls into a corner and sulks

sigh…

Yeah, I considered a gap year but I’m excited about college haha. I actually really want to go to college, so no gap year for me!

solittletime–CC is not a very accurate picture of all the applicants. Thaaank goodness. It’s definitely intimidating at first! I just don’t even think about it anymore. (love your name! soo true haha)

Man, I’ve been telling myself to work on those essays but so far, I don’t really have anything done. AHHHHH. Whenever I try to start, I find myself looking for dreses online. How’s everyone else doing on their essays?

WOOOOOOOOWWW, i just read/skimmed this entire thread in one sitting. Smile, Harvard, rocker, emily, chair, demitasse, u guys all seem like really nice really, and from the looks of it u guys ALL deserve to get in

smile -haha i know, i was like ya…there is no username more appropriate for this site really…
i like your username too, and u seem like a really nice and smiley chick; and oh em geee i totally understand not being able to stop thinking about clothes, fashion, shoes, it always distracts me, sooooooo doesnt help when i’m trying to focus on academics and unis

ya going to yale would just be a dream come true as i’m sure it is for the rest of us. i dont expect to get in, which is why its dumb for me to even apply at all cuz i really really don’t think i’m good enough, but i just feel like i’ll hate myself if i don’t even try, u know?

i really can’t believe how fast highschool is going by, anyone else feel like elementary school just went on foooorrrevver and highschool went by in the blink of an eye? :(

solittletime–welcome!!
And yes, it seems like high school’s gone by so fast. but i think elementary school and junior went by fast also, though i do agree it felt a little slower.

about essays, i’m kind of slacking on those, except for last night at two AM i did manage to type up a nice artist statement (on my phone), lol! i’m not even sure an art supplement requires one but i’m jamming it into it anyways.

i just want the yale supplement to come out already! i’ve been thinking about it based on last year’s questions and i’ve been somewhat successful in coming up with topics. i looked at UChicago’s, though, and the essays look fun even though i’m not too interested in it.

Solittletime–ahhhhh you’re so sweet! <3
It’s difficult for anyone to expect to get in, but you definitely should apply: no regrets! A Yale acceptance or not, by the time spring rolls around, I’m sure there will be a sense of closure with all the college notifications coming in :] And I have faith in the admissions process; we’ll end up where we were meant to be! Also, even if we don’t get in, there’s always transfer/grad school lol! :P

I totally know what you mean about high school flying by, I don’t feel like a senior at all! I really enjoy being a high schooler and even though colleges sounds exciting, personally, high school is pretty comfy and I have fun!

Oh, and Smile—I totally did the same thing today! I decided I would go onto DeviantArt to find some creative college essays (all those artsy folk!) and I saw this ribbon flower picture that reminded me of J.Crew’s new collection of rosette tanks so it was all downhill (…uphill?) from there lol!
p.s. I usually wear pretty girly/slightly boho clothes but all of the sudden, with applications approaching and such, I’ve had a sudden obsession with really cute preppy/collegiate-esque clothes like the Gossip Girl clothes lol! Mmm online store browsing :P

Maybe it’s just me but on my Common App, the Yale supplement isn’t up yet?

haha, SAME!! The essay questions are so interesting and really let you be creative. It makes me want to apply, but the rational part of me tells me not to get carried away
@h00dr1chh, nope, the yale supplement is not up for anyone.
high school did go by fast, but I’m kind of glad. I am reaallly excited for college, I just want a change. But it is sad at the same time…

I wrote two essays but they’re sugarcoated and not “me”. I hate this. I’m having so much trouble putting everything together, and still leaving room for myself to be creative with my writing.

I love the first 125 words of one of them, and that’s all I can get to be perfect. I’ve wrote about 6 different versions of the paragraph following that one, and I don’t like any of them.

Demitasse - love love love gossip girl (made me love yale even more sigh…). Guilford CT, is it close to yale? if it is, hows the shopping there?
