currently I am in a community college and planning to apply for transfer to UCLA in this fall, I am planning to transfer as an econ major, but my gpa will only be 3.85...

is it better for me to choose a different major? or....should I stick with it? I am kinda freaking out right now since I got an B in macroeconomics......

Average GPA admitted for 2012 was 3.92. I don’t know how you can know your GPA right now when there’s still two more semesters (and 6 quarters?) left for you to go before you transfer. Any way you can get that GPA up a few more points?

Haha I’m looking into sociology as an alternative. I definitely looked into econ and business econ too. It’s definitely less impacted than comm.

I sorta calculated assuming i will have all A’s in fall, since UCLA wont look at spring grades, I pretty much only have one more semester left unless I stay for another year, which is very unlikely

But, if i DO apply this fall, i will only have roughly 70 ish Units, but if I stay for another year, I would most likely to raise my gpa for a bit if I take more classes…

@Foreversmileys My oringla intention is comm, but my 3.85 is way to low to even reach the door…I dont know what else I can do to raise it

I’m in the same situation. I think i’m going with sociology; the pre-req’s are very similar.

I’ve heard if get admitted, you have a good chance to change your major if you get good grades once you’re there. Wishing you all the best. I follow a lot of your threads. KIT.

haha, yea but its very difficult to nearly impossible to change your major once you get admitted, especially if you want to change to some majors that are impacted. Are you also applying this fall?

BTW, sociology is also very impacted, but somehow one of my friends got accepted with 3.6 ish…it truly surprised me

Haha, I hear lots of different things everywhere, but ill definitely keep that in mind.

I am applying this fall. I’m in central california, so I only have TAG, no TAP. My GPA is like 3.5, have potential for about a 3.8-3.9 with all A’s this fall, so gonna work my ass off. I do oddball things, I dance, I’m on an independent winterguard team, I work at school (work study), I’m going to be on a forensics team at school this year, and I do lots of nonprofit work with a youth organization that works to build healthy communities and advocates social issues since high school. I think my involvement with them is going to be the highlight of my personal statement. However, I have no internships or anything specific to comm or even soc for that matter, and nothing really to make me stand out, considering my not so great GPA. I’m gonna try though.

Wow you are putting yourself into doing a lot of activities. TAG is only for the UC’s other than Cal and UCLA, and even with TAP, it still doesn’t guarantee anything, since the purpose of it is only giving you an alternative major. You mentioned you only have 3.5 but if you get all A’s in the fall you will have 3.8-3.9? How many units have you completed so far? As far as I know even with 15 units it wouldn’t raise GPA by that much unless you are still low in units o_O …usually it would only increase it by like .0x ish

Go ahead and apply. Your GPA is fine, but make sure you get an A in Microecon and all of the other pre-reqs to make up for the B you got in Macroecon.
The key thing is that you finish ALL of the pre-reqs.

I applied to UCLA last fall as an Business Econ major and got rejected because I was missing the Managerial Accounting pre-req. I had a 3.95 GPA, and the only B I ever got was in Calculus 1.

So just make sure everything is completed by the time you apply (if not, make sure it is taken in the spring semester before transfer).

Thanks so much for replying, actually I am in similar situation as how you have described. I won’t be finishing up all of the pre-reqs by the time I apply (fall 2013) since I still have two more classes to take (Managerial Accounting and Calculus 2), would that really hurt me? Or is it actually ok to finish ALL of the pre-req by spring 2014?

I got in last year as a Sociology major at UCLA but decided to attend UCR Business School. My GPA was 3.85 at the time of transfer. If anyone is interested in UCR Business School, PM me. I also got into Berkeley Political Economy. I am currently taking classes at UCR for summer session and I can tell you the classes are much tougher than community college. I had a 4.0 in CCC and a 3.2 from out of state college

I want to take the CPA exam and they require certain number of accounting units and business credits. UCR is the only place to offer me both. I don’t regret coming here to Riverside. Campus is small, people are nice. Weather gets hot at times but it’s time to let go of your pride and prestige! 10 years from now, it’s not going to be others that you impress, it’s going to be where you’re headed with your career and personal goals. Who gives a _ about where you went to school, especially if you want to pursue an MBA a few years down the road. UCR is still a UC and it aint easy here.

You should finish ALL the pre-reqs by Spring 2014.
I would take Calc 2 and Managerial Accounting in Spring 2014 (or earlier, it’s your choice) and let UCLA know that by putting that under “Planned Courses” on the application.

@ Exzerone: Are you TAP certified? It may help but Biz econ and Comm transfers are usually right at that 3.9 level. My brother is a Business Econ major at UCLA. However, his situation doesn’t really apply. He had a 3.78 with TAP cert. and got denied for Psychology but got accepted for Japanese. He was doing work study but due to no jobs at that time, he got a job working at Anderson. The job was actually meant for grad students but they gave it to him. He got to know the dean and the dean allowed him to switch to business econ. This would probably never ever happen to anyone else ever again. LOL.

So if you are set on UCLA you may want to try another major. IMO, the opportunities through UCLA outweigh whether you get your major of choice or not. I applied to all the UC’s and got accepted to all of them except for Cal and UCSD(waitlisted) as either Anthropology or Communications as the major.

I had to decide whether I wanted to go to any other UC or CSU for comm studies or go to UCLA for Anthro/Global Studies for the “name brand”. I chose UCLA and don’t regret it at all. I interned at an advertising firm over the summer. Don’t let the major constrain you! UCLA has huge firms that come to campus for recruitment.

You can minor in accounting if you want or take management classes.

Also, UCLA has a summer program called BASE where you go to Cal and study business at Haas for 6 weeks. The program is designed for non-business majors and you also get a Berkeley transcript. Not a bad deal. Just letting you know that you have options. Good luck!

@iDizzle thanks so much for your response sorry i didnt see your reply until like now…and it’s december already haha…

Anyways, I have already applied. I actually applied for sociology…since I dropped the calculus course and with all A’s this semester i would be having a 3.83. Although I have finished all the pre-req for comm, I still feel my chance is slim.
Well, whatever I have to say, the application date has passed. Let’s hope for the best for all of us :D

@ Exzerone: No problem. Best of luck to you! Hope you get in. I remember when I first got accepted to UCLA, it was great. The 2 years after you transfer go by so quickly. So make the best of it! I still can’t believe I’ll be graduating this Spring. lol
