2015 Spring Semester Parent's Discussion

Looks like another Ice Storm Warning before the weekend warm-up.

My D said campus was still pretty slippery yesterday.

My girls have said that many of the sidewalks were impossible to walk on, so they just stomped through the grass. My oldest has my duck boots that I had in college 25 years ago, LOL. The weather is still AWFUL here. We had snow, then freezing rain all night. Now it is POURING on top of it. I’ve seen friends posting who had to work today, that the roads are worse than ever. It’s supposed to keep raining all day, and warming up… and now the flood warnings are coming. UGH. I’m supposed to go take the dog for a visit and bring them suitcases for spring break… but not sure I’ll make it!

Definitely can second @moonpie‌ that the situation is just as bad if not worse than ever. It’s warmer temp-wise, but the rain and slush/ice/snow makes it seem like nothing’s improved. But it is what it is, that’s certainly not going to stop me from being horribly underdressed and going out there, haha!

We’re flying to Nashville on Wednesday. I haven’t been able to use my ski clothes this year in California, but I bringing them to Tennessee. We have ticket to a baseball game on Friday. I can’t imagine watching a game with the temperature at freezing. It’s just not right.

@Go9ersjrh‌ we are supposed to get some more snow tonight and wednesday!!! Officially over it. The girls are flying out with the Harry Potter class to England on Thursday. Hoping weather does not delay flights!

Well …D got he first choice for housing next year at McGill.

I’m thrilled for her but admittedly don’t understand McGill at all!

Any word on Mayfield decisions?

My daughter got her Mayfield!

I’m worried a bit about the possible government shutdown on Friday. DD flies home on Friday at around 6 pm. I imagine if this happens, the airports will be crazy. Even with the regular amount of TSA agents, sometimes it is not enough. Did anyone travel and experience a problem during the last shutdown?

On my way to Nashville. Thought we would get an early start on Spring Break plus we’ll get to go to a Women’s Basketball game Thursday night and see S playing in the pep band. It will be great to see him.

I don’t believe that a shutdown would affect airports. The TSA airport people have been designated as essential employees who will not be furloughed.

DS will be flying home on Friday, too. It’s good to know that airport will not be affected by the shutdown. I can’t wait to see him. This will be the first time home for him this semester and he came home nearly every month last semester.

DS is trying to line up an interview next week for a possible summer internship. I am sure he has also lined up to see old friends.

What are everyone’s son/daughter planned for spring break?

My D also got her Mayfield! Found out last night at 9pm.

She is going home with a friend from Alabama for spring break. They plan to visit the Gulf Coast, New Orleans, and just relax! Although she did have a midterm rescheduled for after spring break due to the snow days, so she will have some studying to do…

Safe travels @go9ersjrh. I’m sure you’ll have a great visit! Hopefully the weather will turn around. We went down during my other kids winter break because my son won’t be coming home for spring break and we wouldn’t see him until summer break. My HS junior stayed with him in the dorm one night and got a great taste of what’s ahead for him. (Unfortunately not at Vanderbilt though) We had a great visit.

@4beardolls‌ my son is going to Mexico for the week with his fraternity. Last year he came home and only overlapped the last weekend with some of his friends from here so this year he made plans. I can’t believe he will be in his third year already next year. The time has flown. They say high school goes by quickly but this is lightening speed. I’m sure you’ll enjoy your time with your son over the break. Safe travels to him too…

@MImama‌ is that the Calc test that kept getting postponed?

S will be going to Little Rock, Arkansas with the pep band for the Women’s SEC tournament. He’ll either leave Wednesday or Thursday depending on where the team is seeded. We’re hoping it’s Thursday so that we’ll get to visit with him longer.

Last year he came home for Spring Break, but none of his friends have the same week off. So this year when the opportunity to travel with the band was an option he jumped on it. And it just gave us a reason to head to Nashville. We will go to the Atlanta area with him for a few days so that he can visit with his grandparents.

S applied to Warren / Moore this year. I figure it’s a long shot since there will probably be only be a few rooms open up. He’ll find out on Friday whether he and his friends were sucessful. His next choice is the 3 person apartment. I’m hoping for a room with a kitchen. He does not use all his meals on his meal plan and would be better off being able to fix things in his room. He tends to eat dinner late and tells us that Rand is closed.

I agree the college years are flying by.

I win!

My D will be having a biopsy for celiac!

:frowning:

Yuck, @KaMaMom‌ !! That stinks! My daughters roomate has it. She’s lived with us during breaks the last 3 years, I r gotten pretty good at cooking GF. Campus has a GF group, FYI and events. commons has the best GF selections as far as food service goes. (According to DAD - Dear Almost Daughter). She’ll be graduating with my oldest in May. She did not get any meal plan her last year and a half, though… Just preferred to make her own food instead of walking to commons. They live in Towers, so have a kitchen. It would be harder if she was in new dorms for sure, which is why they wanted to stay in towers. let us know how it goes…

@Momthreeboys: Not the Calc midterm. It’s a poli sci class that only meets on Monday’s, so they are a bit behind with MLK Day and the Snow Day.

. @moonpie … she’s been eating GF since the blood work came back positive over Christmas break - biopsy will just confirm. (And then apparently, we can get U of Chgo to send us a big ol’ GL giftbasket as a welcome to the club gift! lol) Anyway, for anyone reading this with a child w/ food issues, VANDERBILT IS AWESOME! I feel like they’ve bent over backwards for her when in all actuality, it’s probably just an average day for them! D will email the chefs in the morning w/ her meal requests and when/where she’ll be and they’ll have it ready for her.

(For the last two weeks she’s been eating gluten though - she has to for the biopsy to be accurate.)

This break will be the first time she’ll be home where I’ll have to make cooking adjustments - she pretty much tested positive over break and got on the plane for Nashville.
