Anyone have any current feedback about the summer MT program at Steinhardt? The other thread hasn’t been posted in since 2011. What’s the buzz? My D was accepted and has some decisions to make for the summer. She’s most interested in getting a feel for the school and faculty. Being a rising senior, it’s her last summer to get some top notch instruction, feedback and coaching prior to college auditions…is this the place for her? Also curious about how many kids they admit to the program!?
@deelight - my daughter did the Steinhardt Classical Voice Intensive program last summer and loved it. One of her classmates did the musical theatre program and he loved that as well. From what I heard, he has been offered a big scholarship for MT at temple without having to audition.
D did the summer program several years ago and then attended NYU graduating with a BM in VP (MT) in 2012 The program and classes are run by their full time faculty (same people who will sit on at auditions) and very much mirrors classes they will take as an undergraduate. I highly recommend the experience. D is in touch with many in the department, so this info is up to date. The program ends with a showcase which is very similar in format to their freshman showcase.
Thank you @CollegeDadofTwo. And, thank you @uskoolfish…I stumbled on some of your other posts in one of the summer program threads and/or NYU threads and I really appreciate your insight to the Steinhardt MT track. THANK YOU for sharing your experiences. My D had a few nice options this summer, but accepted NYU today!
@deelight You’re welcome. Feel free to contact me with questions. My older D is currently at NYU as a studio art major.
@uskoolfish Do you recall if the majority of students stayed on campus vs. commuter. We live in another state, but have some family a few blocks away.
Both my daughters did summer programs at NYU before senior year. One did MT, the other did art. Most of the students did stay on campus. There may have been some exceptions, but for me, I wanted D’s to experience life at NYU without parents-- in order to determine if NYU was where they wanted to attend college. We live on Long Island, so D’s knew the city, but it is a very different experience to be there on your own. The program offers a good mix of supervised and escorted activities and time on their own to explore the city. The kids really got to bond because they lived together. If you can swing it financially, I would let her dorm.
That’s exactly what I was thinking, plus I want her to be able to build relationships with the others and much of that happens outside of the ‘classroom’ and at meals, etc! Great - thanks again!
D is a bridesmaid in the upcoming wedding for one of the girls she met at the summer program. They were randomly placed as roommates that summer. Two of her suitemates through senior year were from the program. About 8 students did the summer program together and were accepted as undergraduates.
Amazing. I love the way these kids stick together. My D made some great friends at the program she attended last summer & reconnected with several on a recent trip to NYC. We will see what the future holds, like many - D would love to attend NYU, but still not sure about BA, BFA, BM. Another reason this is the right choice for summer - last summer was a BFA program.
