2015 UCLA Transfer Regents

I did get it last year, but not this year. I figured/knew I wouldn’t because I went from a 4.0 to 3.95. I didn’t have any kind of EC listed on my app last year, so I do wonder what the criteria is myself. I thought they just sent it to all 4.0’s and I’m curious if ucla considers anyone under.

The UCB regents page says merit and then they determine holistically, so probably UCLA does something similar. I have heard comments in the past about it possibly used as an enticement if they think someone might SIR somewhere else. It would just be nice to have an idea of the protocol. It’s a nice add to the resume, and it can help with housing and registration.

So @zettasyntax are you a student at UCLA? I thought it was guaranteed for two years unless you go below, I don’t know, 3.7 or something. Or are you reapplying?

And you got it last year with no ECs?

I’ve thought for a year now that while it’s prestigious, it’s kind of hard to get worked up about it because it is just so random. Same with alumni scholarships.

I have a 3.98 GPA and didn’t get it, so I guess the cutoff was within the 4.0s. Also, I feel that UCLA knows I am almost definitely going to SIR to Berkeley Haas as my personal statement about my major was explicitly tailored towards business administration with zero mention of business economics at all. At least UCLA was nice enough to look past that personal statement and to still accept me.

@lindyk8 The second one, I re-applied to UCLA this year after getting rejected last year. I didn’t put anything down for ECs and I didn’t work, so it was pretty much blank. The only thing I can think of after seeing spencey’s post was that I did mention UCLA at least twice in my statements last year, but I don’t think that would really matter to them. So it is just making me guess that they go solely by GPA - that if you have a 4.0, you get it. If your daughter didn’t receive an invitation though, that does kinda mess with that theory though.

I got it. I have a 4.0 and my ECs and my PS were clearly focused towards my future career ambitions–Law. Also my while I could have put a lot of ECs which I half asses, I chose not to and to only include the ones that I put a lot of time and effort into including my internship and President of club. Maybe they aim for extremely focused applications that tie in well altogether. There are quite a few 4.0s so you have to find something that separates from the rest. Just my opinion.

Yes, I was going to suggest essays. My daughters didn’t really delve into things they might like to see re scholarships. And now @persianstudent7, I’m definitely seeing it with your essay.

I think my daughter’s EC were good (2 internships related to her field), but the essay… I have another daughter coming up the ranks, so this is all good to know.

Congrats! And good luck!

Didn’t get it, but I received another (unrelated) email from UCLA which made my heart skip a beat when I checked it (the email was for a Southeast Asian Group invitation, and the first few words of the subject were literally “Invitation to UCLA…” so as you can imagine haha!). Wasn’t highly expecting it with a sub 4.0 GPA + few ECs but would have been nice. Congrats to everyone who did!! And good luck in the process!

I dont know if this helps but i also received the invitation and my stats follows as: I applied with a 4.0GPA, transfer updated with a 3.92GPA. I have a lot of ECs related to my field (comp sci), i work as an IT for several places, and i also tutor at my CC for almost all the subjects. my essays were definitely good, i talked about life as an immigrant and government aids helped my family so much and i just want to become successful and pay back to the community…etc. i think the immigrant part, essays, and gpa played a good role for me to get invited i suppose.

@bearly, My daughter got the Filipino invite (she’s half Filipina), although they spell it Pilipino.

I had like three Mexican/Hispanic themed emails, but I don’t think any of them really invited me to join anything :frowning: :stuck_out_tongue:

Just informational I guess.

For those who received a regents invite from UCLA, did you also get offered regents at other campuses?

@lindyk8 I have a transferable 4.0. I think that my papers as well as all of my extracurriculars were clearly relevant to my field/major (Psych). I was very active in many things on campus/community, but I think the strongest aspect of my application is that my paper tied everything together. My personal statements made it really clear how all of the experiences that I listed on the app were relevant to my major and why I chose to go into psych.

Thx @giraffinyoucrazy. That makes sense. And I saw your other post in the main UCLA thread. Yeah, they would calculate the GPA based on transferable.
Congrats and good luck!

I got the invite yesterday from UCLA. I got another invite to apply to the Regents Scholarship at UCSC on Monday. For stats purposes I’m a one year transfer (graduated high school June 2014) and started CC classes in summer term. I have a 4.0 GPA.
My thoughts on the selection criteria: I think it’s safe to say academic achievement has a huge say in invites but I also think what helped me was the fact that I was insanely focused on only a few ECs that strongly connected to both the major and career I’m pursuing.

Congrats @kindfine !

@giraffinyoucrazy I also recieved regents at UCI and UCSD. I don’t know if I’m even admitted to Cal until Friday night

Just to clarify…if you do not qualify for need based aid, will they still be given full ride through the regents scholarship? or will you get 2k and the other perks like priority registration? thanks to anyone who can answer! I’ve read over their site quite a few times and I’m worried because it seems like the latter  (WHICHHH is still awesome)

@giraffinyoucrazy it would only be the 2k. the full-ride is only for those who need it (according to fafsa)

Yes, just the $2000, plus perks.

This might clarify the selection criteria: http://financialaid.ucla.edu/LeftNavUndergraduate/Scholarships#10669480-ucla-regents-scholarship

It says: “Regents Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and exceptional promise. Although the Financial Aid and Scholarships office administers the Regents Scholarship Program on the UCLA campus, financial need is not used as a criterion in the selection process.”

Meaning students invited to apply don’t all necessarily have financial need. It still doesn’t clarify how some people with 4.0s got invited and others didn’t but it seems this is as much info as you get from UCLA… LOL.
