@davitbar
You seem like a good applicant. Your GPA seems good I’m pretty sure with you essays and a good expanded resume you can get it.
You seem like a good candidate also. I’m not sure how competitive @ut888888
Anyone know how competitive transfer into COLA is? Like average GPA?
Please, will someone answer this. Is a 3.77 enough? ^^^^
awesome application! Kudos and hats off to you!
Also, does anyone here know what “open majors” are? I have heard the term getting tossed around but don’t know exactly what they are.
So I’m an engineering major (at CC) that now wants to apply as a Math Major transfer, and a second choice as a Philosophy major. Either one of these will be fine for me, however for my second choice, Philosophy, the only class I have taken is intro to philosophy. Would taking only one Philosophy course have a large impact on my chances of getting in as a Phil major?
I’m currently debating between Anthropology and Philosophy, as someone who has primarily taken engineering based courses (Calc1-3, DiffEq, LinAl, UniPhys1&2, Chem 1&2, Orgo 1&2), which one would you recommend as a second choice?
GPA is a 3.53
Doubt it would have any impact. People transfer majors all the time. The only thing I can think of is that once you’re admitted, you may have to play “catch up” with some core courses that are required for your major that you didn’t have to take for engineering. Best of luck as always!

Hi, I plan to transfer to UT Austin Fall of 2017. I’m currently doing my application and I’d like to here what y’all think my chances are. Here is some info:
Applying to College of Liberal Arts to major in government.
GPA- 4.0
Credits- 15 (30 at the end of this semester)
Classes completed: History I, Composition I, Macroeconomics, Public Speaking, and College Algebra
Classes taking: History II, Federal Government, Art Appreciation, Contemporary Mathematics, General Psychology
My essays are unique for sure, something that they will not expect. I think that they are decent but everyone will say that.
EC’s: Elected to an elite group in high school and also gave a graduation speech this past week. Football team up until 11th grade
I have volunteered a TON. My job experience is lacking honestly as well.
I also have two letters of recommendation; one from my English professor and one from my former principal at my early graduation high school (I graduated a year early).
@krisstory99
It’s COLA your fine, cap get it’s in with a 3.2 gpa. Your a definite lock as long as you have 30 hours by the end of this semester and keep the 4.0 .
If I were you, I would start looking into apartments in Austin they get rented out quickly.
P.S. - make sure your essays are gooooddddd, being a transfer to COLA it will affect your application.
How about average GPA for COLA for non-cap students? @utcswannabe
@wickedwarrior777 for regular transfer students, the average acceptance GPA is a 3.58 or a 3.62 I don’t remember which, but either way the avg. is about 3.6.
hey guys! I am having a little bit of trouble with my app so I was wondering if you guys could give me advice/chance me. COLA/Govt degree
I had a pretty good GPA (3.75) my freshman year of college. my first semester sophomore year really screwed me over, and I was dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety about the future. on top of that my fam was going through some hardships and, overall the mix of me not enjoying my classes and my path alongside the family stress i was dealing with I opted to leave STEM (which i discovered I had no real passion for) and opted for a political science degree, which is something i really enjoy. anyways, my stem courses last sem brought me down to a 3.65.
i wouldnt be too worried about my GPA had partaken more in ECs in college! I was never able to join clubs because, the majority of times, i couldnt afford the fees. I was always out of luck when finding a job. I feel like because my ECs are really weak, and the only thing i have going for me are memberships to 2 clubs and high ranking positions in my high school journalism dept. i feel my hope for acceptance slowly dwindling I feel pretty hopeless because I feel like I dont belong in my current campus… if I dont really have a chance then i might as well save the economic strain of applying, right? please help guys, i need advice!
tldr: my gpa is smack in the average gpa for COLA but my ECs suck. help? thank you!
Hey there @foreverago! I am sorry you feel this way, but I definitely don’t think you should give up! Might as well fail trying than not even trying at all–which to me seems like more of a failure because you never know what could have been! As long as your GPA is in that range, you should be fine in that department. For really feeling confident in getting accepted, you just need some killer essays. And hey, all that stuff you wrote about family hardships and failure to join a club due to money…? That is what you need to tell the UT admissions in your essays! Explain your extenuating circumstances to them, they want to know! Don’t feel hopeless, use the information and circumstances you have to your advantage! I hope this helped
Hey Guys! I currently attend Texas Tech University and have applied to transfer to UT for the fall of 2017. I currently have 16 Hours of actual college credit and 9 hours from AP classes in high school. Im doing 16 more hours this semester. Im applying for COLA (Psychology) and I’m currently (and will be) Pre-Med.
GPA: 4.0
AP Classes: CALC I, Statistics, and ENG I
College Classes Completed: Gen CHEM I, CHEM I Lab, Intro to psychology, Politcal Science, College Alg and US Hist I.
Current Classes: Gen CHEM II, CHEM II Lab, Intro to sociology, CFAS (public speaking), Intro to Cinema, and US Hist II.
Extra Curricular High school: Tons of club soccer and high school soccer, member of 2 clubs in highschool, National Honors Society, and worked a job as well.
Extra Curricular College: Member of Beta Upsilon Chi, and volunteer at a Children’s hospital 4 hours a week (didn’t have time to do much else due to pledging a fraternity last semester).
My essays are decent (I only wrote the two required because I haven’t really had any outstanding hardships in my life)
Two letters of recommendation: History Professor and Psychology professor.
What are my chances??
@dancer1998 thank you for your advice, it really helped a lot! guess i might as well give it my all on these essays
@foreverago I’m in the same spot for my extra-curriculars, but I have a 4.0. But truthfully, for both of us the most important part will be the essays. If you want to get in, you must write some really good essays because 3.65 is dead average and without really good ECs its gonna be more difficult. I don’t have any college ECs, but I did give a graduation speech at my old high school recently.
@futbol411 lol you look like a lock.
Hey guys, I thought I’d post and see what ya’ll think of my chances into getting int COLA (Psych).
I have a 3.51 w/ 35 credit hours. I’m confident I’ll have a 3.66 w/ 56 credit hours by the end of the semester.
Was hoping to get a chance for me
3.53 gpa with 80+ hours will have 3.6 by end of the semester
2 letter of recommendation from my Math and Physics professors
Applying into Math and Philosophy as a second choice
I dropped out of high school senior year because my father become seriously ill, and I had to support my family financially. Because of this I was unable to complete high school until four years later. I began college immediately after and went through the most difficult courses I could find at the college. I’ll definitely be writing about my struggles throughout those four years in my essays.
