2016/2017 UT Austin Transfer Thread

Is a 3.78 a competitive GPA for COLA? I’m looking to have atleast a 3.78 when I apply. Any comments welcome and as always, all the best to you all.

@wickedwarrior777 yes its competitive, average acceptance GPA is a 3.6 for COLA

@krisstory99 glad to know someones in the same boat as me! at least your GPA is really good. do you mind me asking what college/major you’re trying to get into?

Government COLA @foreverago

Hello! I am a freshman at a San Antonio community college and was wondering if anybody could chance me for acceptance as a transfer student in the fall of 2016.

-I am a Hispanic, female.
-My current major at my school is Radio and TV Broadcasting.
-I am looking to transfer into Moody School of Communications as either an RTF major or a journalism major. For my second choice I am applying to COLA Undeclared.
-I withdrew from 1 class after realizing that it would not transfer.
-I expect to have a 3.8, maybe 3.7 when my second semester ends in May, but as of right now I have a 3.33.
-I have letter of recommendations from a high school principal, a public speaking professor, the Austin Community Colleges president, a high school secretary, and a former employer.

-In high school I was a principal’s aide and assistant, a book club member, involved in theater, and a trainer on the football team.

-I have volunteered at various homeless shelters, participated in setting up a cancer charity fundraising event 3 years in a row, children’s centers, and churches.

-English is my strong suit so I do not expect my essays to be a problem. I am taking 24 hours this semester, and still need to register for two classes (taking two 8 week classes) so any suggestions for classes that would look good would be a great help. Any help and/or tips at all would be greatly appreciated, if somebody could please chance me! Thank you

@courtney463

I think with a 3.7+, your application would be pretty competitive. Not sure how competitive Moody is for external transfers. Do your best this semester for sure. Also, does anyone know what an “open major” is? As always, all the best to you all!

@courtney463

For last year, the journalism major let in people with majors of 3.4+ for people that reported it during last year’s transfer thread. But for the RFTV program, pretty much everyone that got in had a 3.9 with a 3.8 and 3.9 being denied! It seems that program is pretty competitive but you have a great shot even now to get into journalism!

Guys! I’m super nervous about getting in! I have been checking this thread daily for anything that can calm my nerves. I want nothing more than to move to Austin. Hoping for COLA!

@nerdygirl2100

Same here! COLA all the way! I’m applying with atleast a 3.73+ so I think we should both be good since our GPAs are higher than the average acceptances. Idk ur extracurriculars but I’m sure you have good ones. Hopefully, we’re both a lock. All the best to you all,

ww777

My extracurriculars are pretty good :slight_smile: I am only a semester into college right now, but had lots of AP credit. So i have national speech and debate association, congressional debate, a german exchange program, german historian, national thespian society, and AP scholar with Honor from high school. In college, I have gymnastics, a political club, honors college, and American Marketing Association. Along with several jobs and volunteer work opportunities. I think thats enough, but some of what I see on here makes me think it is inadequate. Some of these applicants are truly amazing.

@nerdygirl2100 you are for sure in lmao. You make me nervous, someone with lacking extra-curriculars but a 4.0, very nervous.

Aside from in-school organizations, do internships count as extracurriculars as well? Outside of school so far I have done:

Radiation Oncology Internship (summer 2015 and 2016)
Cardiology Internship at a Charity Clinic (since April 2016)
Doctors Without Borders Internship in India for about 50 + days at once. Doing again this summer.

Any opinions welcome. Best of luck to you all!

ww777

Yes internships count.

I actually have an academic honor as doing a high school graduation speech. Do you think that’d help in the selection process? I thought it was a pretty good academic honor to have on there.

Gosh, with the amount of people commenting here with phenomenal ECs I really am starting to doubt my chances of acceptance even though I have a 4.0…

Someone chance me again…?

4.0 GPA - 15 credits - currently enrolled with 15 more - applied for COLA government
ECs aren’t too extensive - Member of elite group in high school and on football team for a couple years, and church youth group which idk if that even counts

I have done tons of volunteer work with church and other organizations.

My essays are about how I use stress to my advantage and an inspirational story my teacher told me, so pretty unique essays.

My academic honors include: 1-year early graduate, distinguished degree, beacon essay award winner, and graduation speaker at a high school graduation.

Two letters of recommendation - one from high school principal who is the one who asked me to do the address to graduates, and also my English professor in college.

What are my chances…?

I’m pretty sure with a 4.0, you’ll get into COLA easy even without ECs. ECs help most if you’ve got a competitive GPA and want to set yourself apart (like me). With a 4.0 tho, you should be set as long as essays are good

There are a lot of people on here applying for COLA Government. That is what I applied for as well!

Hello,

Freshman at UT Dallas here. I have a 4.00 and am looking to get into McCombs for fall 2017. When does UT generally make fall transfer decisions?

Hey yall, does anyone know if the chances of getting into COLA or social work is better? i was just told School of Social work but previously thought that COLA was easier.

Can someone chance me please?
Current freshman at UTD, after this spring semester I will have 32 transferable credits in mechanical engineering.
Current GPA: 3.975 (I hope to get similar after the current semester)
First choice: Mechanical engineering
Second: Civil Engineering
ECs: Lots of clubs in hs with leadership positions (treasurer of student council for 3 years, VP of NHS for 3 years) started a mentorship program with an elementary school with my hs, and participated for 2 years. At UTD I am a member in both American Society of Mechanical engineers and Society of Women Engineers, although I’m not too active in them.
Essays: Average (if admission only counted on essays my chance are low)
Resume: I worked as a construction intern at anight animal science center for 6 months as well as a grocery store for a year. Numerous engineering academic projects and proficient skills in all microsft/adobe applications and fluent in 3 CS languages.
Letters of Rec: currently I don’t have any, should I try to get one do I have a good chance without one? I don’t think my current professors know me well enough to write me one, would a hs counselor be ok?

I know engineering is hard to get into, should I put my second choice at another school and hope to transfer internally or do I have a good chance to get in as is? It’s my dream to go to UT. I really appreciate your opinions, thank you in advance.

You should hear June 15th or May 25th at the earliest. See here:
