2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

So as far as the letter of recommendation, it would better to get it from my econ professor if I want to transfer as an econ major right? Because I’m currently a music major and im not sure getting my rec from my violin prof will have much weight, but on the other hand, he will know me the best because I have one on one lessons with him.
Thanks

Can you submit one from both? I think that if it’s between a glowing and personalized rec from a violin prof, and a vague and impersonal rec from an Econ prof, I would go with the professor who knows you.

Does USC look at our overall GPA or our GPA that only consists of courses that are transferable to USC? I found out not all of my courses are transferable, so I was just wondering.

@gottastudy54 from what I know they’ll look at two recs if you send two, so get one from an important class that you’re doing well in (Econ for you) and another from a professor that can say more about you on a personal level (violin for you I assume)

@mjstewart1224 @penntousc thanks for the help guys!

sup guys im back. Many of you won’t remember me but I was a transfer applicant for the last cycle and didn’t get in. Hope I’ll have a better chance for fall 2017

I see that a lot of ppl are freaking out about letter of recs. dont be. USC specifically focus on your college courses and your grades. I’ve talked to them during a college fair at my school and they rudely told me they only look at grades/ essays and don’t put much emphasis on ec or letter of rec. Talk about being “holistic” in their admission process lol

@smileesarefree yes, they only look at courses that are transferrable to calculate your gpa.

@whostolemycookie depending on your major focus on your prereq and GE, get MOST of your GE done if you’re planning to transfer to usc at a sophomore level. USC tends to accept students who completed a lot of GE because they prefer you to take major prereqs at their school.

@awalksonman You wrote that we need economics 1 and econ 2 to transfer micro/macro…where did you read this?
I thought its only 1 of them?

@zettasyntax If you don’t mind sharing, what were your stats for transferring? I am trying to get an idea of where I stand.

@gatsby22 look at the previous conversations many people have posted stats already

Does anyone know if USC cares that you applied as freshman? How do they look at it?

@pomeranian4rich May be onto something regarding letters of recommendation. The first year, I had only asked my English professor to send one for me since she seemed really fond of my writing and I took two classes with her, but she never sent in a letter =| The second time I applied, I asked my linguistic anthropology professor and she also forgot to send in a letter for me, lol. So both years, I had no letters of recommendation and I got in the second time =\

@gatsby22 Sure thing.

1st attempt: 4.0 GPA - a little over 40 units by time I sent in my application
First major choice: Undecided/Dornsife
Second Major: Computer Science/Games - (I knew I had no chance at all with this one)

Received an SGR around April 20-something. Wound up with 5 A’s and 1 B (the B was in my transferable math course). Rejected. I didn’t have much major prep completed, per se, and that’s why I applied as Undecided. I technically had 63 units after my 21 unit spring semester, so I would have still been a sophomore (especially since some of the classes most certainly did not transfer). I was also lacking 1 of the GE courses (I believe it was the science).

2nd attempt: 3.9 GPA (after that pesky B, but it was also joined by my first W)
First major choice: Anthropology (with the intention of switching into linguistics)
Second major choice: Sociology

I had about 4 or 5 anthro courses completed (including linguistic anthro) and for sociology, I had only 1 course. I get accepted for the spring semester and for sociology. I’ve always found this very odd as I clearly had more of an interest and was better prepped for anthro. It really made me question the whole importance of major prep. Also, I finished that last GE course and wound up with 100 units having spent an extra year at CC. I’m now a computational linguistics major and think I’m finally finding my way here after a rocky start. I absolutely love my Human Language as Computation course that I’m taking this semester

@zettasyntax wow crazy, I really believe that the only reason your sophomore year you were rejected was cause of lack of major prep and then your junior year is just confusing since you clearly had a big interest in anthropology and took major preps for it.

@Pantafootball A working theory I had is that they seriously considered me more for the CS/Games major and when I got a B in an “easy” math class, that was enough for them to reject me lol =\ Interestingly, I had the sociology class completed as a sophomore, so who knows if I might have gotten in had I put sociology my first go around?

@zettasyntax what math was it if you don’t mind me asking

@Pantafootball It was either statistics or pre-calc. I can’t remember (I do remember taking both and dropping one that led to my first W during my second transfer attempt), but it was basically the bare minimum (one class after intermediate algebra) that transferred for credit.

@zettasyntax damn I got a C in pre calc now I’m worried haha my only C ever

Hey everyone! Prospective Marshall cc transfer here. I have roughly 60 units, but I’ll be missing 2 GEs (I’m going to try and get them done during the winter or spring or summer). I have a 4.0. If I’m not able to get the 2 GEs, do you think USC will admit me for spring 2018?
