2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

@Cisco524 It would count for both categories.

@dogsAREsocool199 Awesome thanks!

Another question is it necessary to have all my 30 units in the GE requirements or can I take courses that transfer but are not in the GE requirement. If I can take any transferable units should I take more credits from the GE requirements or does that not really matter?

Also can I take both courses from the same category at my CC or does it have to be one at my CC and the other at USC? I’m asking because last year I heard that you could not take the both courses at a CC.

I’m still debating on what to put as my first major. I want to study international business (global business) and at USC you can achieve that through two routes: double-majoring through Dornsife and it being International Relations with an emphasis in Business Administration -OR- double-majoring through Marshall and it being Business Administration with an emphasis in International Relations. Although I know that they are basically the same major, which would be a better outcome for me and provide better benefits? Putting Marshall as my first choice or putting Dornsife instead?

I’m currently taking an honors course in business math. I’ve contacted USC and I’m not sure if it will even transfer over for Marshall, despite being more difficult than my school’s equivalent of business calculus. Will they look at a mediocre grade in this course (B-) and think of it as roughly the same as my other courses despite it possibly not even counting towards 30 credits?

does anyone know if you have to take a science class before or after you transfer as marshall applicant??

and also if i were to drop one of my courses this semester and make it up by taking an additional class spring semester how much will it hurt me?

@adkjnsf If you’re getting a W then I don’t think it’ll hurt you that much. I’ve seen a few people with a W be accepted for this year. Just as long as you’re a full-time student for at least a year and you’re doing well then you should be fine. But there’s risks with both choices. Admissions particularly don’t like too many W’s. It’s better than failing though. Also, if you decide to take the additional course Spring semester and you can’t handle it then it might mess up your GPA. It’s your choice though.

@USC4lyfe Oh! I asked admissions a similar question about finishing the last of GEs before transfer. She told me it shouldn’t affect your chances of acceptance, and as long as it’s shown on your transcript that you’re finishing up your GEs then it should be fine. However, there’s always a chance you’ll be SGR’d. It’s just not likely that it’s because of that scenario.

I’ve always wanted to go to USC since I was a kid due to the fact that I have a family member who went there. But the thing is I haven’t been as good in school as him. I’m currently at a CC, it’s my sixth year there…mostly bc I didn’t know what I wanted to major in. Now I’ve decided it’s business. My GPA has gone down to a 3.09 and I have 7 Ws, most of which have been for math courses and I’ve retaken and passed. At this point I feel very down Bc I feel I don’t have a chance at getting in to USC or any other UC…not sure what to do or where to start. My cc counsellors aren’t very helpful many of them have just suggested for me to go to UCLA or other schools, and I would be highly embarrassed to speak to an SC counselor being that I have taken so long and that my GPA is low. Any advice? Tips? Anything? Thanks

@thegreatkay I’d say just got for it. Apply, write some amazing essays and hope for the best. You can write about how it been a struggle trying to find your true calling and you finally found it. With your GPA I believe you can still apply, to some UCs, if not all of them. It’s worth a shot, and if that doesn’t work you can definitely get into some CSUs, which may not be as well known, but are still quality schools. A 3.1 and 7W isn’t the end of the world.

I kinda was in a similar place. I had a 3.3 going into this semester and at this point I’ll be lucky to get a C or B in my classes, which will drop me down to around a 3.0, but I’m still applying and trying to write great essays, and really just hoping for the best. And if nothing goes my way I have a back up school in mind. Just remember that you can be really successful at any school, whether its a lower tier CSU or UCLA or USC, its all about applying yourself. Of course going to a place like USC may benefit you more than a CSU, but in some ways its more about what you did during college than what college you went to. If you end up going to a place that less known just try to stand out, try to be one of the best and it won’t go unnoticed. Sometimes its best to be a big fish in a small pond. I hope this helped.

Someone who I consider a mentor once told me something along the lines of “If you have a goal, something to look forward to, and you know you want it, never feel down. This life will be filled with obstacles, but never let that stop you from becoming who you want to be. Fight for what you truly want.” (rough translation)

I thought i read that soph transfers can declare Undecided as their major but I don’t see the option to, so is that not true or am I missing something?

Hi! I’m kinda new at this. I’m a student from Malaysia and I was hoping if I can reach out to any prospective Malaysian candidates through this thread. That aside, I really hope I can learn a few things from you guys through this thread.

Im so excited/ anxious to apply!!

Anybody know how to go about obtaining recommendations? I mentioned it to one of my professors tonight and he agreed to write one for me, but said he would do so as long as there’s some sort of format to the recommendation, but I’m not too sure how to get a formatted recommendation sheet considering my high school teachers wrote simple open ended recommendations.

@penntousc When you send them a request through the Common App website it may be accompanied by a prompt.

Does anyone know if there is a maximum number of units someone could take at a 4 year to still be allowed to be admitted to USC as a transfer? I know they wont transfer more than 64 units but will they prevent you from being admitted if you have more than 64 units (from another 4 year) and not yet have a bachelors.

Hey everybody, I’m an out of state (MA) CC student, any opinions on my chances?

3.89 GPA right now and worse case scenario I’m down to like 3.75 after this semester. More likely it stays around 3.8 though.

I have more than 30 units so HS grades won’t matter. I’ve taken overloaded semesters, am doing two associates degrees in two years (one business one liberal arts). ECs are student government (I have some responsibilities but not an officer) and theater. Have a job teaching at the YMCA. Have won some scholarships, but nothing spectacular. Applying to the Price School.

@GeneralGoat If you’re first year, you have really good stats with alot of courseload. If you’ve taken or will take calculus 1, you’ll probably get accepted. Or w/e the math prerequsite is for the Price school is

Thanks for the feedback @silvermansachs , it’s actually my second year (in other words I’m in my third semester) but I have Calc 1 done and I’m taking Calc 2 now.
