@arteest1 I’ll have the grades to get in and almost the entire GE curriculum completed, but I won’t have the foreign language because my CC doesn’t have any that transfer to USC. However, since I’ll only be a sophomore, I don’t see them having a problem with that because I’d have my entire sophomore year to complete a foreign language and any other necessary courses. If I decide to apply to Annenberg, it’d either be for Communications or Journalism because I’m very, very big into sports (specifically football) so getting a job in sports media would be perfect for me. I’ll also be getting at least one letter of recommendation which would be from my Composition professor, and that’d look good since there’s a considerable amount of writing involved in either of those majors. Thank you for the info, that definitely does help because I thought I was for sure going to apply to Marshall and had focused solely on that, but now it’s up in the air so it’s good to have as much info as possible.
@penntousc No problem! Good luck deciding
@penntousc I’ll throw in my two cents. USC offers two job/internship portals: one for all USC students and one specifically for Marshall students. Browsing the Marshall portal for spring entertainment internships I’ve seen quite a few openings for sports media internships at several media companies (including NBC which is one of my dream companies). By applying through Marshall you’d automatically be up against a much smaller pool of competition. Not to mention there are so many job and academic resources only open to Marshall students. Plus Marshall has an open 30-credit curriculum meaning you could minor/ take 30 credits of pure comm classes and still get a business degree. My point is that I think Marshall offers more perks and flexibility as far as getting the most out of your degree.
But of course the decision is up to you, good luck!
@awalksonman that actually completely changed my perspective, I will DEFINITELY be applying to Marshall after seeing that. A separate portal for only the business school isn’t too common, so that definitely sounds like the way to go, plus I won’t have to take a foreign language. For the record, my dream job would likely be working within the NFL, or working within a specific team’s organization, so that sounds like a great way to eventually get to those places. Thank you very much for that insight!
Hmm, so just randomly popping in, I met with my advisor and he said I can participate in the upcoming commencement! I didn’t think I would be able to do so since I was a spring admit and my projected graduation date was 12/2017, but apparently I’ve moved up that date by tackling too much (which I regret to some degree) and would just need to take 1 course in the summer. It all seems a bit rushed, so I hope I can still do some summer research or something since my GPA definitely isn’t up to par for grad school sadly.
Hey guys! I’m thinking of applying to Marshall but I have a dilemma/question. So I started community college back in 2014, did so ugly the first two semesters. I failed four classes. I’ve gotten it together since then, managing two semesters and two intercessions of all A’s and three B’s in total. I retook two failed for A’s and did this thing called academic renewal for the other two. I’ve read around and from what I gather USC does not count the retakes or renewal. If this is true, how screwed am I? All four of those classes are unfortunately transferable GE’s. However, I’ve also taken other classes that count for these GE’s as well. Sorry that this is long and confusing, I would really LOVE to attend USC, I’m just conflicted as whether or not I’d be eligible because of my first year mess up.
@khanam0 I mean the fact that you retook them will show good on your part but those four failed classes are still going to be a part of your gpa. The transferable gpa is 3.7 btw.
According to my portal I have about a 3.6 but it doesn’t count the failed classes in there. I also have 4 W’s which I know is probably bad. I’m hoping the upward grade trend and the personal statement will help my chances, still not very confident though lol.
@khanam0 @Pantafootball USC does not have a minimum GPA requirement although their average is around
a 3.75. Showing major improvement and having the upward grade trend will improve your chances.
Hey everyone!
I want to apply to the Marshal School of Business as a Business Administration major, however I also want to apply to the USC school of cinematic arts for Screen and Television writing. Can that be done? Can I possibly apply for both as a double major? I’ve always been interested in film though I never pursued it in high school and now that I’m in college I really want to try it. That being said do you have to have recognition to apply/be considered for that major?
I’ve been thinking about applying to USC as a sophomore transfer lately but I’m not sure if I’m wasting my time / $70. I’m currently a Com Sci major, if I apply as a Soph do I need to have all of Com Sci math requirements done like the Calc 1,2,3 etc completed?
I currently have a 4.0 UC Transferable GPA with about 29 Units taken.
However I might take a W in Precal this semester and just retake it in the Winter (will be my first W, and I’m not at risk of failing I just don’t want to take a C). Which means I’ll barely be in Calc 1 in the spring. Is there any point in me applying?
@Twenmi I’ve got a similar question, (is it required to complete all GE requirements before transferring?), would love to know the answer to both!
@Twenmi You’re definitely not wasting your time, but you’re putting yourself in a definite SGR situation. Calc 1 is pretty much the expected math course that you need to have completed, so if you can’t take it until the spring, your admission will basically depend upon whether or not you actually complete the course as planned. However, you’re always free to apply for a backup major and if you wind up not getting in for CS, you can try to declare the major afterwards Although, you will pretty much need a B average in the intro classes to do so. CS at USC has been very difficult for me - however, I’m not a CS major, so that’s likely why I’m not as competitive as a lot of the other students (nor do I have as strong of a mathematical background).
@doihaveashot2016 Certainly not. In fact, I still have 1 GE pending. It just makes you a stronger applicant to have all possible GE courses completed. I’m unsure of the new GE course pattern, but the old plan made it so you had to take a GE course at USC (Science and Its Significance being one such category), so it was 100% impossible to actually have completed all GE requirements needed for your degree anyway
Hey everyone here is my current situation. I am a sophomore community college student; Business Administration major/Econ. My first year at CC wasn’t that good I got a 3.16 gpa average. I took three classes over summer up to a 3.35. I have three As right now and 1 B; might have to drop my calculus 1 (80%) class which would make me a part time student, however I would have a 3.48 and then I plan on taking two winter classes which would bump my gpa up to a 3.53. I talked to a USC rep she said if I’m retaking the calculus class or business calculus in the spring then they would send a spring grade request however she said that I becoming a part time student would look bad as well. USC has been my dream school. I was just wondering if you all think I have a shot, or if I should just stay one more year at CC than apply next yea.
1 choice: Marshall School of Business: Bus Admin
2 choice: Economics Dornsife
Thanks,
First time on the forum.
@Warrior106 I don’t see the harm in applying, so long as you’d have ~30 units completed by the spring despite you dropping a class. Being a part-time student can be a concern, but I remember a really cool dude from the forums that was really part-time (he barely took any classes just before transfer) and he still managed to get in Your GPA would just slightly be below the USC transfer average of 3.7, but you can still get into Marshall. However, maybe your odds are better for your second choice. As the rep said, you are all but 100% certain to get an SGR if you aren’t taking calc until the spring - that’s a really important class for your major.
You definitely have a shot - just try to focus on things that make you stand out in your essay. Maybe you have a really interesting EC or something. I don’t think you would be wasting your time especially since you seem to be planning on applying next year anyway. The best case scenario would be that you don’t have to do that
Hello everyone, as a junior transfer would it put me at a disadvantage for not posting sat/act scores on the app?
Also how are my chances of making it into USC Marshall school of business with a UC gpa of 3.85 and prob most of GE reqs/pre-reqs done by winter. I would only need 2 more GEs (physics and humanities) for spring to finish everything. Would I receive an SGR?
Thank you for your help! @zettasyntax
When are we supposed to submit our applications by?
@cc2LAuniversity February 1st but all programs in the School of Dramatic Arts, Kaufman School of Dance, Thornton School of Music, and Iovine and Young Academy, and some programs in the Schools of Cinematic Arts, require applicants to apply by December 1st
I have a question about courses that appear in two categories in the GE requirement. If I take History 101 per se, would it count in both categories that it appears in or would it just be for one category? Background information, I am currently a freshmen at a CC and plan to transfer to USC fall 2017. Any help would be appreciated.
