@gosteelers123abc I have no info about it but I heard that only a small amount of applicants apply to the school of price, but that doesn’t mean it’s easier to be admitted to their program.
@pomeranian4rich well in that case I’m better off applying to Marshall and switching if that’s what seems like the better move, because my CC doesn’t have lab based science courses that transfer to USC (besides geology) and Calc 2 is the highest level of calc I’d be able to complete before transfer
@gosteelers123abc yes, I am!
Anyone know if our transcripts are due by feb 1?
@jjcc77 no. You don’t have to submit it by feb1. They will process your application but won’t look at it until you submit your transcripts. They don’t start looking at transfer app until march/April because they’re busy with freshman applications.
@pomeranian4rich thanks!
@jjcc77 np!
I’m currently attending New Jersey City University, and by the end of my spring semester, I will have completed 31 credits. I’m just finishing up the fall semester right now & I will have around a 3.7-3.9( i don’t have all my grades yet, but it seems like a safe estimation at this point.) I will have completed 13 credits for the fall semester (which i know isn’t much) , and I am taking 19 in the spring, so USC doesn’t have to look at my high school grades + SATS. On their website, it says that if you complete 30+ credits, they don’t look at high school grades + SATs. I didn’t apply myself in high school, and had a 2.8 gpa & 1880 SATS. I have been involved in many extracurricular activities, such as writing for the college newspaper, photographing for the newspaper, working in the study abroad office for my work study job, and recording basketball games for the school. I have also been very involved in political activism in New York City for the last year or so. Additionally, I have been a freelance photographer for the last year, and I won a gallery thrown in NYC in my honor. I can assemble a solid portfolio to show my work. I am also a low income student, and I have heard that helps my chances of getting into schools. I’m not relying on that, but if it helps, then cool. I’ve heard from many people attending USC that their financial aid is very generous, and have read that online as well. Being a low income student, the financial aid is a crucial aspect of my college decision. I was wondering if you guys think it is likely I will get in. From what I’ve read on these forums, I seem to stand a decent chance, but college decisions are always a toss up. It probably doesn’t help, but I have three cousins who have either attended USC & graduated recently, or are attending now. I am applying undecided, but at some point, I will likely major in computer science. Also, I have 1 W for a math course on my transcript, but i’ll be taking a math course in the spring to make up for it.
@dnymrel your chance at admission is likely going to come down to the amount of general education requirements you meet, as well as university requirements. The writing requirement is probably fulfilled by completing the first 2 composition or writing courses at your university, the math requirement (for USC and for csci) is probably calculus, since you will be completing multiple levels of calculus in USC’s csci curriculum. Also, making sure those 31 credits will be transferrable is important.
I’m also a low income student, but USC’s admissions are blind to the financial statuses of their applicants, so income will play no role in the decision. It could be different at other schools, but whoever told you so might have meant ethnicity, because that can provide for a non-academic advantage.
Other than that, you definitely seem like a competitive applicant. I can relate to you quite a bit in the sense that I also didn’t apply myself in high school, and had about a 2.78 and 1700 on the SATs. You might even have the same admissions counselor as me, because mine reviews applications from PA and a few counties in NJ (as well as Louisiana but that’s irrelevant), which would also benefit you because the applicant pool is very small. You have a good GPA, solid EC’s (although I remain very unsure of whether or not USC looks at them, counselor told me no, everyone else says yes). I’m not familiar with how family alumni works, but it definitely might help. Overall, I think you’ve got a pretty good shot, as long as you knock out of GE’s and the math & writing requirements. Good luck!
Does USC consider the whole GPA or just GPA for the classes that are transferable?
Never mind, found the answer here: http://admission.usc.edu/transfer/prospective/transfercredit.html
@penntousc wait so our regional admissions counselor is the one reviewing our applications? I thought it would be like an admissions committee or something
@USofAwesome I’m pretty sure it goes through a number of processes and there’s more than one person that will see it, but I think the regional counselor is the first place it goes and if they don’t reject you, you probably have a decent shot. I could be completely wrong but I thought that was how it worked
Ok, thank you so much!
@pomeranian4rich ok thank so much!
Does USC consider only our fall grades, before making their decision? Or is it, Fall and Winter?
@Bounce4Dayz I want to say Fall and Winter. My ccc didnt have winter last year and those extra classes could’ve helped me but oh well. I think they consider fall and winter, and if they want more information they will send you a SGR, spring grade request.
Hey guys! I’m planning to apply for Fall 2017, and was wondering what kind of chance I have?
I started a semester late at my local CC, so I’ve only taken Spring 2016, Summer 2016, and Fall 2016 so far. I’m planning to take Winter 2016 too!
I’m not sure if I’ll have enough units to transfer as a junior, but if I’m just shy of 60 units, do you think they’d let me take classes over the summer and still go in as a junior? That one missing semester is killing me LOL
I’m applying as a biology major, and I heard it tends to be really selective because of grades and stuff D: Are my chances good if I have a 4.0 GPA right now?
Ahh I’m so worried T_T
@Shuisazn I heard they prefer to admit applicants with less credit completed so they can take more classes at USC (they make more profit that way lol), but I wouldn’t worry about you entering as junior or as a sophomore. What’s more important is the quality of your classes, not quantities. So forget the number of units and focus on the major requirements/GE. And I think they will let you take classes at your cc before starting school in the Fall. You have to submit your whole transcript before registering for classes. It’s hard to say if you have a good chance with a 4.0gpa. What makes up your 4.0gpa? Is it all GE classes or PE classes(lol)? the number of GE/prerequisites you have completed for your major is a good indicator of your chance, not just your gpa. Feel free to message me if you have anymore questions.
Ok for some more clarification (because I realized my last post seems a little vague LOL)
I’ve taken:
General Chem (both semesters, still waiting on the grade for the second semester)
Introductory Biology
Calc 1 and Calc 2
English (the second level one, after the one USC requires)
Sociology
Philosophy
I’m planning to take the first semester of o chem, the second biology class (deals with classification and stuff?), and two other general education classes next semester! I don’t have many extracurriculars besides being in chamber orchestra at the CC, but I heard that USC looks more at the grades that the ECs. Is there anything else I should be doing?
Ultimately, I’m aiming for medical school and a career as a cosmetic surgeon.
