2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

Hi, one of my reasons for transferring is because the major that I would like to get into at my current school requires certain courses that are only offered to freshman and since I am now a sophmore, I cannot take those courses and therefore can’t change into the major that I want. Do you guys think that this a good reason for me to include, or should I leave this out?

@mhak17 I don’t think it would hurt to include it. it shows your tenacity for that major.

hey guys! do ap credits count toward the 30 credits?
I got a 4 on macro and world history and according to college board website, usc would grant total of 8 units credit for those scores.
I did bad in high school so i really want them to just focus on my college grades!
I earned a total of 16 units in fall but only 14 of them are USC transferable so I’m really scared that they will focus on my high school grades since i have less than 30 units.
I have only signed up for 14 units of usc transferable courses for spring so I am freaking out right now!!!
Please help me.

@uscgrad2020 yes they do count ap credits toward the 30 credit. They take most ap credits with a score of 4+ so you’re good no need to worry!

Hello everyone, hope all is doing well and enjoying their holiday break! Just wanted to get some feed backs on my stat I suppose. What do you think? And for those who were accepted from previous years, do you think I have a good chance?

I am attending a CCC, this is my second year, and I am applying for USC transfer Fall 2017.
I am majoring in Economics so I will be applying for Dornsife ( and from reading the previous year thread, it seems like Dornsife/Econ is fairly to get in).

Current GPA: 3.7~3.71 transferable units (quarter system) For the remaining winter and spring quarters though I aim to have a 4.0 each quarter, so that should bring my GPA up a bit.

I have my major courses done already : macro/micro econ, Calc 1A and 1B, and Stat (I received all A’s for all of these courses except for Calc 1A and 1B where I got solid B’s for both classes, do you think this would hurt my chances? I feel like Calc is really important at universities, considering it is part of my major req too).

As for the USC articulation, by the time I submit my application I will only have 2 categories where I have not complete yet (the 2 science categories, but I will be completing them during spring quarter).

I think I’m at a pretty decent standing, what do you think?

@rawrrxboo it depends how many units you have completed. if you’re a junior standing and still havent completed two GEs that is fine because you’re REQUIRED to take two GE classes once you transfer to USC. for econ it seems like you need business calculus, not calculus 1 and 2 (only for math/econ major you need calc 1 2 and 3, at least for my college (pcc)) I think you have a good chance since you have macro/mirco econ completed and all A’s. besides classes and gpa your essay will play a big role so make sure you have a solid essay.

Hey guys can someone give me some advice on my transfer profile? I’m a transfer student applying from penn state with a 3.54 gpa. I was also a full time student at a local CC before going to penn state and I had a 3.72 gpa over there. I have a total of three W but 2 of them were because my transfer credits didn’t come in correctly so I was forced to take two classes that I wasn’t supposed to be in and my advisor recommended just dropping them. Any help/advice? Thanks!

@dangerruss you have a good chance. your gpa is decent. I suggest that you mention your three W in your common application and explain why you have those W. Otherwise they will assume you dropped those classes because you couldn’t handle a full time course load.

@pomeranian4rich how can I strengthen my case??

@rawrrxboo @pomeranian4rich Calc 1 will count toward the business calc requirement for Econ… so it does fulfill that major req.

@USofAwesome it depends on your college. for business admin I need calc 1 and 2 if I don’t take bus calc. for Econ they specifically want bus calc. so I guess it varies for every major.

@pomeranian4rich I’m gonna call the admission counselor after Christmas just to double check since I want to be 100% sure that I’m not making a mistake but I found this major sheet for USC and on it it says Math 118 or Math125 for Econ http://www-ccd.usc.edu/assets/sites/524/docs/baEcon.pdf as well as: http://dornsife.usc.edu/econ/ba-economics/

@pomeranian4rich I don’t remember exactly but I have 70+ transferable quarter units. Business calc isn’t required for my school/USC agreements, I was only required to finish up to Calc 1B. Thanks for your advice though! I was worried the B’s in Calc would lower my chances somewhat. And yes, I agree a solid essay is key.

How important would you guys say the essays are? I’m pretty confident in my writing skills so I’m not really worried about it but I figured I’d see what you guys thought

@pomeranian4rich @USofAwesome I double checked with USC transfer planning guide, for Econ majors, for lower division math req it can be either Bus. Calc or Calc 1B( which I have taken already) I was just worried because my grade for it was a B.

@USofAwesome You are right that you need calc 1 for econ requirements BUT do take into account that calculus 1’s materials may be different from college to college. USC’s calculus 1 can be different from harvard’s, cornell’s and even community colleges. so my cc’s calc 1 and 2 is equivalent usc’s calculus 1 because of one topic: exponential functions lol… We don’t cover exponential functions until calculus 2 but usc covers it in calc1.
I suggest you to pull out usc catalog course description and your college’s catalog and see if the same materials are taught in usc and your college’s calculus 1. I didn’t quite understand why usc’s calculus 1 = my cc’s calculus 1 and 2 until I checked the course’s description. I hope that helps.
if your college isn’t listed here https:// camel2 .usc.edu/TPG/ or in any of the usc articulation list, then you have to check your class’s description and match it up with usc’s classes.

@rawrrxboo Even though it’s a B I can see a consistency in your grades. Your B didn’t drop to a C in calculus 2 and you kept it at a B which shows your effort. Having A’s in your econ classes is a plus because it’s your major lol
@penntousc I think it plays a very big role, especially in placement like sgr(waitlist). I took my essay for granted and wrote it last minute and because it was so poorly written I assume the admission committees threw my application behind everyone else’s (for SGR applicants) and I would be the last one to hear back in mid-July, kinda like a filler if they needed more applicants. Yeah, so I learned my lesson and this time I’m making sure I write a solid essay. (already finished it, but still polishing it until Feb.1)

I got my fall grades today.
If I’m applying to Marshall business and these are my stats, do I have a good shot guys?

All A’s (also in Writing requirement and Calc 2)… except for two B’s (one in Calc 1, one in international relations).
I also have most of my GE’s complete, except for 2 (which I’m not doing until I get to USC).
I’m applying as a junior so I’ll have around 75 semester units.

@cc2LAuniversity your chance is as high as mine, but I would suggest that you explain to USC you’re going to take your two remaining GE’s at their school so they won’t wonder why you haven’t completed all your GE despite having over 64units. remember: if you have lots of units completed, they expect you to have most or all requirements completed.

@cc2LAuniversity I think you have a good chance. Your calc grade shows an upward trend from a B to an A.
