@pomeranian4rich yeah, I’ll probably call them first thing Monday. Thanks
Hi guys! I plan on sending in my application soon and wanted some feedback on whether I have potential towards being accepted! I am greatly open to any advice as well.
-Current freshman at Santa Monica College (applying to USC for sophomore year)
-First choice major is COMMUNICATIONS (impacted, I know ugh) second choice PSYCHOLOGY
-Applying with 3.6 GPA (16 units completed), plan to have 3.75 by end of Spring (38 units)
-Completed 6/8 core literacies by end of spring, 2/2 global perspectives
-Completed ALL prereqs (stats & psych)
-Will have excellent essays, community involvement + letter of req from professor who used to teach at USC
-I won the most honored awards 3 years in a row at some national high school journalism conferences (in which Annenberg reps made an appearance) + experience in the industry
-I also wrote about how I can relate psychology to my career interests
-USC legacy
TBH I’m hoping to get a spring grade request. Then, once i submit the 3.75 gpa after my spring semester at SMC, be accepted for my second choice or at least undecided as a spring admit.
Thanks!
@zettasyntax @pomeranian4rich that is what I heard for UCLA so I am really hoping to have a chance at USC. When I was speaking to a USC counselor she just told me it is recommended but not mandatory to take before transferring.
That is great to hear because the school I am currently attending has really amazing psych department.
Hey guys, lurking on here is making me nervous haha. So can someone give me some input on my chances of getting accepted with my stats?
-Junior transfer applicant
-Out-of-state community college
-Planning to major in Communications at Annenberg
-GPA: 4.0 all A’s
-Taking one GE spring 2017 semester to complete all that’s required
-Foreign language requirement fulfilled with a score of 5 on my AP test
-Where I’m from, there’s not many internship opportunities related to my major, but I have a lot of leadership roles like SGA, and I volunteer at an international organization
-My essays are pretty solid, and to add to that I have two letters of recommendation
-My only concern is that I only took 10 credits my first semester of college, but I explained why in my application. But since then, I’ve been a full time student. I even took 12 credits in summer semester and 20 credits this past semester and got all A’s
@muffin546 Hey there. A lot of people from SMC transfer to USC (maybe not as much as those that go to UCLA, but still, they had a noticeable presence at my transfer orientation). Heck, even the director of the orientation proudly proclaimed she attended SMC back in the day With a 3.6 GPA, you’re essentially at that 3.7 competitive mark. You are pretty much guaranteed an SGR if you’re going from 16 to 38 units. That’s quite a bit and USC will want to see how you did since your current unit count isn’t that high (this is a reason why many soph applicants get SGRs). If you can ace most of the classes, that will definitely impress them. I went from 32 to 62 units (9 winter units and 21 spring semester units) and I received an SGR. However, I was also taking my transferable math course, so that added even more reason for USC to send me a spring grade request. Your journalism-related ECs will surely boost your chance with an Annenberg major. USC legacy is always good too. Your chances are rather solid I’d say. Your hope of getting an SGR is likely to come true, so just be prepared for the infamous USC wait
@ashurikko Strictly going by your stats, you have an outstanding chance. If you have a 4.0 and took pretty much all of the GEs and not some random classes, you’re clearly above the average admitted GPA and are good to go. Also, it’s probably unlikely that many/any community college courses will satisfy major requirements of the communications degree, but as long as you’ve taken courses related to communications, that’s good enough As with the poster above, I have a feeling that USC might want to request spring grades from you. Going from 10 to 20 units in a regular semester might give reason for them to see if you can keep it up the good work (although if you tackled 20 units and aced them all, I don’t see this being a problem for you). This is just my opinion because USC likes to see at least two years of full-time attendance. However, I don’t think your situation is as bad as mine. I only took 6 units my first year at CC and then really started to crank things up. Anyway, a bunch of rambling lol. As long as you don’t mess anything up in spring semester, I don’t see a lot of reasons for you to worry - maybe just a little though because nothing is ever a sure thing. On a random note, the new Annenberg building is so cool. I always want to hang out there, but feel intimidated since I’m just a comp ling major and have nothing to do with their school
@zettasyntax I finished the equivalent of Physics 151 and Calc 1 and 2 and Differential Equations with A’s and will be applying with a 4.0 having completed all G.E’s. But now what I have left on my articulation is Linear Algebra. I’ll still probably get an SGR right? (Will have 55 units by the end of spring, didn’t want to take unnecessary classes that don’t transfer for Viterbi)
@zettasyntax My major is CSBA btw
Hey guys so this upcoming spring I’m taking my last ge course I need … everything else is complete including major prep and 6 other ge course… at this point should I just do that class or actually take a full course load. Since I’ve completed everything and people say taking relative coursework is important would it be a good idea to take random courses ?
@Pantafootball I’d recommend taking a full course load so you remain full time… just don’t take anything that you’d struggle to get an A in
@itslife123 I’ve noticed a lot of CSBA majors in my CS classes that I’ve had to take! In fact, a lot of them had a final for one of their business classes at the exact same time and date as the final for this one CS class, so I’m not sure how the heck USC let that happen Although, I think the majority of the ones I’ve briefly chatted with aren’t transfer students.
I’m not actually sure if an SGR is a guarantee for you. Calc II is essentially the highest minimum prep they want for CSBA transfers right? How many units are you taking? Like 15-18? If anything, I believe they might send you an SGR for not being at junior level standing (in terms of units) by the end of the spring, but if you have the minimum prep completed, I bet they might skip straight ahead to a flat out decision.
@Pantafootball I agree with @penntousc. It would likely look somewhat bad to them for you to take just 1 class and not even be a half-time student. I took the most random stuff like microeconomics that had nothing to do with my linguistics major, but it was fine. There was really nothing else for me to take, so I picked courses that sounded cool.
@Pantafootball I agree with others. Take classes that you are interested in so that you have 12 semester units for spring to be a full time student. (USC loves full-time students) For example, I also need one last GE in the spring and beside taking that one GE I decided to take intro to business, calculus 3 and speech which will bring me to 14 semester units to stay full-time. Even though those classes are not prerequisites, I am taking them because I’m interested in them.
check this forum that I made last year for accepted transfer students if you haven’t seen it yet: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-southern-california/1877907-usc-fall-2016-transfer-students-stats-decisions-only-p6.html
Noticed that many sophomores who were accepted finished all or most of their GEs and were accepted despite having below an avg gpa of 3.7. The transfer applicant, awalksonman, had a low gpa for fall:3.3 and spring:3.4 (and one W) but had completed his or her prerequisites and all GEs as a sophomore applicant and was on a better track than I was despite having a 3.8 in fall and 4.0 in spring. It just goes to show how important completing GE is for sophomore applicants.
@zettasyntax Hi! Thank you so much for the reply! I’ve been seeing you a lot here and just wanted to say thank you so much for helping all of us out
@pomeranian4rich which major are you applying as?
@cc2LAuniversity School of Marshall for business administration
Hello, I was wondering as a business Junior transfer, if I take the math pre-req. (calculus) during spring quarter, am I for certain going to get an SGR. Or is there still a chance I will just get a flat out admissions decision w/o SGR.
@usc4ever Well considering one of the main factors of Business transfers is Calculus, I would assume you will get ir.
@usc4ever most likely you’ll get a sgr because it’s a major prerequisite. An exception would be that you have a high gpa and strong grades that they know you’ll do well in spring otherwise they want to see how well you do in spring before making their decision.
Hi guys! I was wondering what the chances of me receiving a SGR would be:
Credits completed: 45
GPA: 3.74
GE’s: I have about 3 more to complete in the Spring (chem, bio and stats) I completed one major pre-req and my school does not offer the other major pre-req.
@gatsby it’s hard to tell if an applicant will get a sgr. But if you are taking lots of GE requirements or major prerequisites and depending if you have an upward trend of your grade you might or might not get one. Applicants near the 64 units mark usually won’t get a sgr unless they’re taking a major prequisites or lots of GE in the spring. I for example will probably not get a sgr because I have 68 transferrable units and a 3.9gps and only need one more GE to complete in the spring. I doubt the admission would send me a sgr to see how well I do considering I’ve gotten all A’s in the last three semesters.
