2017 - 2018 USC Transfer

Speaking of second choice majors, I was going to make mine broadcast and digital journalism, but I noticed that if I were to do that, I actually will need to write another essay explaining as to why annenberg is the write school for me. This is really frustrating because for the first essay, I’ll be talking about my desired minor in sports media, and my interest in sports journalism/media involvement at USC, and if I write about annenberg, it’s going to be a very similar answer in terms of why I’m interested. So, should I give an answer that’s practically the same anyways, or should I just make undeclared my second choice since I’m expressing my interests in sports media in my first essay?

@penntousc well leaving undeclared as your second choice defeats the purpose of getting “3 chances” for admission lol cause they give sophomores a chance for undeclared. Maybe choosing econ or international relation is your safest bet because it is within the lines of business admin.

Hey guys FAFSA and CSS is due March 2nd right? Also is it true the later you do it their is a higher chance you won’t get as much Financial aid?

Thanks for reading!

@pomeranian4rich oh yeah I know I completely contradicted myself there, just having a tough time deciding on a good second choice but I guess it doesn’t matter too much since I would probably have a better shot at getting accepted for business anyways

I am currently a sophomore, and my dream is to transfer to University of Sothern California for my junior and senior year of college. Since my sophomore year isnt over yet, I cant give any hard numbers on what my GPA will be, but I am going to just give you a GPA that I would ideally get.

Major: Computer Science

Freshman year:

1st Semester GPA - 1.89

2nd Semester GPA - 3.7

Sophomore year (again, ideally):

1st Semester - 3.7

2nd Semester - 3.7

Extracirriculars: The only club that I am apart of is Ski & Snowboard Club. There aren’t many clubs at my school that I am interested, and not many clubs in general. It’s a very small state school, and I haven’t been very interested in them. I do, however, play on a few intramural teams, and am the captain of one of them.
I completely tanked my first semester of college. I slacked off a lot, and thought I could scrape by easily like High School. Plus I was trying to balance working 30+ hours a week and school. Once I saw my horrendous GPA, I quickly changed my attitude and did quite well, and plan on continuing that trend.

How are my chances looking for USC? Anything you could recommend that would make me a stronger candidate for admission?

@AnimaVestra3 it’s all going to depend on how many transferable credits you have, how many general education classes you’ve completed, and how many major prerequisites you’ve completed (with good grades)… as a computer science major I assume you probably needed to complete calc 1, 2 and 3 as well as linear algebra and differential equations, as well as a some science classes and a writing requirement… if you’ve got most or all of that completed, you’ll probably have an ok shot because of the upward trend in your GPA since your first semester. Best of luck!

@squirtlesquirtle I think you have a pretty good chance because you’ve completed all of the major prep and have plenty of credits, and I think whether or not you get in will come down to your GE progress. Obviously your GE classes will more than likely transfer because they are all UC transferable, but you will probably need to have 7 or 8 completed in order to have a shot. There are 8 different GE categories, two of which require two classes. If you have almost all of them complete (two core literacies need to be completed at USC anyways), I think you have a pretty good chance. Good luck!

@penntousc FAFSA/CSS is due by March 2nd right?

@itslife123 I’m not sure what the deadlines are, I’m just going to start handling that stuff as soon as I send my application in. I don’t think time will affect your aid though, because there were some people with really low EFCs last year that heard late (June, July) and I believe USC still met full need.

Hey guys, I’m currently a freshman trying to transfer as a sophomore and I’m worried about my chances because I won’t have the writing requirement completed until the end of summer… So I was wondering how my chances look…?

Applying to Dornsife as Human Biology major

Units completed by spring: 38 (30 transferable)

GPA: 3.78

Transferable GPA: 4.0

GE’S: 6/8 Core Literacies and completed Global Perspective category
One letter of rec from writing professor

@penntousc Same, I saw the website saying March 2 but just wanted to confirm here. But it seems more people are concerned with getting in than financial aid, which makes sense considering the time period we’re in  Best of luck man!

@itslife123 yeah that’s what I’m thinking as well, and thanks you too!

@et8818 it’s really going to depend on how they feel about the writing requirement not being completed, since that is very important. Other than that, I think everything looks good, you’ve got a lot of the GEs completed (same amount as me) which will definitely increase your chances, and obviously the GPA is good. Best of luck!

@et8818 I have to say that your chances are iffy since you won’t have the writing requirements completed in the spring. It says that “Writing and math are required for all transfer Students”. “Successful transfer applicants will complete a course equivalent to the lower-division requirement, WRIT150, before applying for admission”. I really think your chance of getting in is compromised because you’re not taking the writing required in the spring like other sophomore applicants are.

So what do you think my chances of getting accepted if I have been accepted to USC before, but chose to go to an Ivy League school instead. Then, decided to transfer to USC? I also have legacy with 2 siblings who have gone or are going to USC. Also my gpa is 3.3 which is lower than the average of 3.7 for acceptances.

I am also a sophomore currently and majoring in CS.

@et8818 are you currently attending a community college? A USC admissions counselor informed me that the english requirement can be waived for transfer applicants from four-year universities.

@stahboy unfortunately, I don’t think being accepted in the past and attending an ivy will impact your chances. It’s likely going to come down to your final GPA, transferable credits, completed GEs (very important), and completed major prep. If all of that is handled, then I think you should be good. I would expect them to at least recognize the rigor of Ivy League courses when considering your lower GPA, so I don’t think that’d be a huge issue.

@smileesarefree yes I am currently attending a community college and hopefully the requirement can be waived… Either way, I’ll be finishing the requirement during summer before enrolling at USC (if i even get admitted that is)
