Hey, well, the first time I applied, my major choices were undecided (first) and computer science/games (second). I had pretty much all of my GE requirements completed, but I needed to complete my foreign language. At that point, I had only taken one semester of Spanish. So at that time, I was pretty much all GEs and very little in terms of major prep. I had taken a ton of programming courses, but they didn’t transfer over as course equivalents at USC (however, they did at UCLA). Anyway, when I applied again, I decided for a different path and took a ton of anthropology courses (like 3-4 more aside from one that I took for GE purposes). Other than that, I took another Spanish course and pretty much whatever just to have a full schedule (microeconomics, etc). This time, I applied for anthro (first) and sociology (second). My new major choice was going to be linguistics, but since I had applied for that at other schools the year before and had been rejected, I didn’t want to risk it - and given the fact that there’s very little in terms of ling courses at the CC’s I went to (I just had human language communication). Sorry this is getting so long, but in the end, I was accepted for sociology - despite only having 1 sociology course. The crazy thing is, I had that sociology course completed as a GE requirement the year before! My GPA went down just a little when I applied the second time and if you count that Spanish, I didn’t really do much else in terms of GE completion (since there wasn’t anything else for me to complete). So to me, I wonder if I could have been accepted the year before since they didn’t even accept me for the major I was more prepared for.
TLDR; all you can really do is just continue to take a full course load if you were rejected to show that the rejection didn’t stop you from trying. But I hope you don’t have to go down that road. It sure sucked having so many units at CC; the FA office even told me that they would stop paying for me to take classes
@zettasyntax wow well I guess I’ll just have to take a full course load of other classes or just change my major haha … and I know I don’t want to go through that road since 2 years of CC already seems like enough for me #:-S maybe if I get rejected I’ll have to sit down with a USC councilor and let them know about my situation and ask them what classes would I be taking if I have everything completed for me major . But thank you for the response!
Anybody here know someone that put the deposits down on their backup while waiting for USC, but managed to back out when they were accepted, and successfully enroll to USC? My backup has a deadline of May 1st for the seat deposit (like most schools) and I would need to have on campus housing, so I would have to put a deposit on that as well. Just worried that if I put the deposits down, it’ll cement my position and I wouldn’t be able to attend USC if I were to be accepted. Already emailed someone at my backup, just wondering if you guys knew anything about this.
@penntousc hey! I know @zettasyntax he did the deposit onto UCLA and dropped it to go to USC… I think he said you’re just going to lose money but it’s better than not having a backup if USC doesn’t come through. That USC loyalty though
@Pantafootball @zettasyntax I thought so, but I thought they might try to force me to go there if, by June, I’ve got a room and roommate and everything set up. All of that is necessary for me to get started on in late March-April so that housing doesn’t fill up, so that’s why I’m a little worried. Worst case scenario, I ditch my backup and stick to another year of community college because I’m not going to jeopardize my chances with USC over a mediocre fallback school. USC over everything lol
@Pantafootball Yeah, I wouldn’t wish another year of CC taking some random classes on anybody I just found my situation weird because you’d think USC would have admitted me for anthro. In my case, I was at CC for four years (the first year being part-time) :\
@penntousc I can only speak about UCLA, but on June 1st, I just sent my SIR in. The fee was waived, but I think it’s about $100 usually. I found out about my spring acceptance 5 days later, but I was very upset with the fact it was for spring. I went ahead with UCLA and did a payment plan for a dorm while I kept thinking about USC. I continued to make payments and it wasn’t until July (maybe early August) that I changed my mind after my terrible orientation experience with UCLA. I cancelled my enrollment and despite thinking my dorm payments would be lost (especially since I was already assigned a room and a roommate), I got the $650 that I had put toward my dorm refunded to my account - I hadn’t even asked for the refund. So aside from the SIR (if you have to pay it), I don’t really think there’s too much of a risk if you initially commit to say, UCLA
@zettasyntax thank you! I’m guessing this is what the counselor at my backup will say, so hopefully that works out and I can make sure I have plans made if I’m denied at USC.
Is anyone going to pay USC’s full tuition if getting little to no aid?
Guys, I am a first-year at a cc, but due to the amount of AP credits I have and the number of courses I’m taking/testing out of, I’ll be graduating this spring. Do you think that means I’ll have a SGR (I had 19 class credits and 20 credits completed by the end of the fall semester)? Because I applied to a few schools that require a decision by mid-may, so I’m not sure I’ll have time to hear back from USC at all, if that’s the case. Am I allowed to put a deposit down at one of the others while I wait to hear back from USC?
@CCTransferer Yes, USC typically likes to see two years of full-time attendance. While it is awesome that you have so many AP credits to knock things out having so few units actually completed at a CC makes it quite likely for USC to send an SGR because they’d definitely want to see more than one semester’s worth of college grades. However, if you find yourself accepted to a school that you wouldn’t mind attending, you can definitely go ahead and submit your SIR/make plans. I did the very same with UCLA. USC wait times can be excruciating, so if you have other options, you should definitely take advantage
My college transcript has yet to be taken off my portal
Since I am a first year engineering major and I am currently taking Calc 2, does that mean that by default they are going to ask for my spring grades? (I have more than 30 transferable credits at USC due to IB scores)
@greenpotatoe if you’re only in your first year of college, you can basically be certain that you’ll be receiving an SGR (or straight rejection) no matter what classes are in progress
@penntousc Does this also apply to trojan transfers? I’m curious if USC rejects a lot of TTP applicants
@kamtea they accept over 90% if not all TTP lol it’s like having priority over regular applicants. Kinda wish I was on the TTP too.
@pomeranian4rich oh wow…i see…hopefully, you’ll get in as well do they usually ask for SGR from TTP applicants?
I was offered TTP after I didn’t get in senior year of highschool… I didn’t pay attention to it cause at that time I didn’t think I’d do good in college to even be considered again… oh the regrets :((
