***2017 National Merit Finalist Thread***

@Tgirlfriend Thank you.

Posting from Utah. Called and confirmed that I am a finalist! Thanks to @CaveMom

Called and D did make it to finalist. I talked to the school and they still have not receive anything but mail does come until 3pm. We are in NC.

Doing these from memory
PSAT 222
SAT 1490 (Jr year)
~1540 (fall senior year)
ACT (Jr year) 33
GPA 4.0 (uw)
~4.9 (w)
Has taken 5 AP classes so far (all 5 on tests)
Is take 3 AP classes this spring.
Was ranked 11th out of about 600 in class at end of Jr yr (There were only 2 semifinalist at her school and the other one was probably ranked 2nd)
Has a lot of EC and service hours.
Is going to go to East Carolina University (ECU). Wanted to be in state for ungrad and the other instate schools that had what she wanted (Nutrition and Athletic training) she didnā€™t like as much as ECU. She has already been accepted to Honor college and is a finalist for Early Assurance for Physical Therapy (interview next Monday).

Now need to decide if I tell her she made it or have her wait for the school or letter to the house. Canā€™t really celebrate because she has musical practice at the school until 8pm.

Have really enjoyed see all the comments about people making it. Hope to see many more.

test

Posting from Houston TX. I just called the #. My S is a Finalist too!! 221 selection index (Texas) but highest regular new SAT was 1460. Did get a 34 on ACT the 1 time he sat for that test. He can use NMF for free ride at U of Houston Bauer Business. He is also in UT (auto admit) + McCombs + Plan II and my alma mater, Boston College (Carroll School Management). He heads to Bauer this week to sit in on a few honors classes. Grateful to all the CC adult members who stay positive and helpful to others.

@Notknot77098 Congratulations! H-town pride! Go Coogs!

Yes Son is a finalist from WI. He has no idea yet.

Daughter made it!! We are in CA. She is already in college (USC through early admission) so we are hoping she gets some kind of a tuition break.

Tex151: Son applied to quite a few schools including state school, Univ of OK. Others include Rice, Tulane, UNC Chapel Hill, Univ Virginia, Vanderbilt, Wash U St. Louis, U Chicago, and two Ivies. Applied EA to a few, but most RD. Accepted so far to OK, Tulane, and UNC Chapel Hill. Waiting until all RD school decisions are in in late March before making decision. Visited several already to try to get a feel for private vs. public. Pros/cons to each. Weā€™ll see. Wants to be a physician so debate going on paying big money to schools not offering merit scholarships vs. taking a merit scholarship offer. I make too much $ to qualify for non-need based aid, but itā€™s a stretch (but doable given my income level and 529 savings) to pay Ivy league costs assuming he were accepted. Iā€™ve read endlessly as to the justification, or lack thereof, of paying the higher undergrad costs for a pre med track education. Will wait until weā€™ve heard back from all schools before making final decision.

@phokie : Not to hijack this forum, but in a nutshell I am really eager to know pros and cons that you have learned, if you can share please. Almost in the same boat. Waiting for RD decisions, with similar career path ideas and financial situations.

Not that motivated to find out if our kid has made NMF status here in CA (no news or letter yet) because I donā€™t think Stanford gives any money for NMF, right? Does UC Berkeley or UCLA give any money for becoming NMF? I was happy when our kid made NMSF because I thought it would lead to a near full-ride merit scholarship from some Honors College or state colleges (which it did); but it doesnā€™t seem as if our kid will be going that route, so I donā€™t think there is any incentive for our kid to make NMF now.

@phokie @prospect17 We were in a similar situation. We had few near full ride merit scholarships locked in (assuming our kid becomes NMF which I expected he would) from one or two Honors Colleges, and he unexpectedly got into Stanford REA. He does not want to be a physician but we were in the similar situation deciding paying big money to Stanford with no financial aid vs. taking a merit scholarship offer at Honors College. We have pretty much chosen Stanford mainly because we decided to go with where our kid wanted to go. [We can afford 4 years of tuition at Stanford but told him there might be no money if he goes to graduate school.] Had our kid chosen a Honors College route, I would have been just as happy, if not happier. But since Stanford was our kidā€™s ā€œdreamā€ school (he didnā€™t want to go to Ivy school in the East coast so he didnā€™t even apply; Stanford was the only HYPSM school he applied to), it was hard to go against our kidā€™s strong desire, especially when we could afford it (we are not very rich but did manage to save enough money for an expensive private college).

Just called and made finalist in PA. 3.63 UW/4.81 W with 2 semester Cs in AP classes, 12 AP classes total, 1510/227(?) PSAT, 1570 SAT. School also submitted the app a day late. Good luck to everyone still waiting!

I have been tempted to call, but think I just want my daughter to find out on her own.
Congratulations to all of the Finalists!

@websensation Thatā€™s great. I totally hear you. Itā€™s a tough choice to let go of full ride in a good college, and pay so much of money for one of the top colleges in the country. But again, since it is his dream, totally understandable.

@nac7890 Wow. Congratulations! A lot of variety in those stats. Should give every future NMSF reading this thread for tea leaves something to latch onto. ~X(

Prospect17: Will summarize for you this evening after work.

I think that stats can be helpful to others who are watching the process in the future so Iā€™m putting some here for our finalist. PSAT - 220, SAT 1550, ACT 34, 8 AP classes, 3.7 u/w 4.4 weighted, no Cā€™s. u/w GPA was really the only concern for us.

@websensation Cant speak to Stanford, but S has applied to both UC Berkeley and UCLA. From everything I have seen, none of the ā€˜stateā€™ schools in CA give a penny for merit based accomplishments, NMF or otherwise. Only need based aid from those schools. Somebody correct me if that isnā€™t the case. S still hasnā€™t completely ruled them out, but decisions arenā€™t till late March and I think he is tired of it all and wants to come to a decision. If not, we may have a last minute late trip to the left coast over spring break.

OMG I just called NMSC and was confirmed a finalist. After all these weeks of worrying, I was sure my rejection letter was lost somewhere because of my poor mail service. With 3 C+'s, I was almost sure I was gonna get rejected. Thanks to all those who were supportive since back in January, you guys have all been so great! Full ride to FSU, letā€™s goooooooo.
