***2017 National Merit Finalist Thread***

Got my letter today! Finalist from WV

@DMM53064 My son’s school has not mentioned receiving his certificate but I called on Monday to confirm and today the finalist letter arrived. If the letter has not arrived today, call NM in the morning.

@frazzledsenior17 Oklahoma and ASU are ones that come to mind. Received a letter from Oklahoma just yesterday. You should call them ASAP and see if they would still take your application. Good luck!

D got her certificate from the school today. Principal received it yesterday. We’re in NY.

Thank you all for the encouragement to call. My son is a finalist! The school counselor didn’t know the letters had been sent and so I gave him the number to call. (I would join a thread called, “What I wish counselors understood
”) Son was called into the office and told. He called his mother and she cried. He called me and I cried. So proud of the young man.
To those of you still waiting, I wish you luck! I think there is more to do on our end but at least that hurdle is completed. dm

So glad I called this morning (finalist, yay!) Our school has not said anything yet despite having a dozen semifialists and we still have not gotten anything in the mail! That is really the best thing to do for one’s sanity if anyone else is still waiting for official word - thank heavens they answer quickly! We are in CA.

My D received her letter notifying her of Finalist status today in WV! What an accomplishment for all the Finalists!
As a side note, notifications to schools are addressed to Principals. As a Counselor as well,
my school has not informed me of any information regarding National Merit as of today. I did expect to hear something last week but have not. Most likely the Finalist received notification at home today.

Does anyone know about the corporate-based scholarships? I am looking at a school that does not offer a scholarship for NM, and I am pretty set on going there. Would it make sense to list it as my first-choice school? Would this make me eligible for a scholarship through NM or a corporation?

To be eligible for a corporate scholarship, most times you have to have a parent who works for a corporation that sponsors one. My older son put a college as his first choice that does not sponsor NM awards because none of the colleges he applied to sponsored them and he was eligible for a corporate award. Lots of finalists leave their first choice as undecided for as long as they can until the college deadline for declaring it. Keep in mind, if you are offered one of the NM scholarships and you turn it down, you don’t get another one.

Our school told kids today. All 12 semi finalists made the finals.

17 kids from S17’s HS were named semi finalists. Only 9 were named finalists. This state has a relatively low selection index compared to some of the heavy hitters like CA, NJ and D.C. I wonder if this is how NMSC balances it out in the end?

Just curious. What is in the letter to the school? How’s it different from the one sent to home? We got the letter at home with a certificate today.

We already knew but got our letter in Kentucky yesterday. They don’t beat around the bush! Salutation is “Dear Finalist,”

@JBStillFlying Congrats to you. Sucks that Stanford doesn’t give anything for making NMF. Got nothing out of being NMF. Even if someone gave $500 USD for being NMF, I would have been happy. Recouping PSAT/SAT testing fees would have been nice. Oh well. . . that’s life.

S just go the letter confirming he’s a finalist.

D17 got her letter today.

Quick update on University of Chicago as they aren’t as generous as they used to be. Just found out that they switched sometime this fall to a $2,000/year scholarship, down from $4,000. I think NU gives out a similar amount but could be mis-remembering. I always liked the fact that UChicago seemed to want to attract NMF’s. Not sure that’s the case anymore. Fortunately they are supposed to be good with need-based aid but of course that can change from year to year.

Finalist in Utah. School still hasn’t said a word.

PSAT 1450 (216), SAT 1500, ACT 34. 4.0 UW, 8 AP classes total (but he’ll have taken 12 tests by the end of May).Club president, normal extracurriculars.

He was admitted to Willamette University EA (his first choice) and offered their top merit scholarship. NM should add an extra thousand a year because Willamette is a sponsor school. Not a whole lot of money but we’ll take it.

Made finalist, have certificate. Wondering something. I named a college who isn’t on NMSC list of sponsoring colleges. Is it too late to change it to one that is that I also applied to?

Hey, $2K per year is better than ZERO per year.

Nope, not too late. Looks like you have until March 1 to finalize your choice.

I agree, @websation, but $4,000 is better than $2,000 and $4,000 is what it was when d17 made the decision to apply in the fall. In all honesty, we didn’t think to look to see what might have changed when she was deferred in December and opted for ED II. It’s the only thing I overlooked when it came to examining the expected net cost. Oh well.
