I’m in no position to judge my writing, but I liked my essay enough and put my most significant extracurriculars/employment/awards, so I’m incredibly honored and grateful!
(I really need the money.)
I’m also the first one to make semifinalist in over ten years from my school, so perhaps my guidance counselor was more effusive in her letter of rec/her side of the app.
Best of luck to everyone, and you’re all awesome no matter the results!
This website that @oblivion2017 posted last week has a brand new article for parents/students like me who are waiting to hear about index score cutoffs and commendation cutoffs for the class of 2018.
Congratulations to those of you who are award winners!
I received the $2500 scholarship but I’m very surprised. 225 SI and 2370 SAT with good extracurriculars, but my essay was actually cut off in the middle. Like I continued writing past the word limit, and it wasn’t until after submitting and I received the PDF that I realized that only half my essay was there. I guess they liked the half that showed up!
Quick question, and maybe this has been addressed elsewhere. My son got the $2500 scholarship and is attending Stanford, which gives no additional funds for NM. He has, however, received some financial aid. Will they deduct the $2500 scholarship out of the financial aid offer? I don’t expect people to know Stanford’s policies per se, but what is typical?
You should be able to look that up or call them for clarification. In the case of UChicago, they say that the NM funds would deduct from workstudy or summer earnings but not grants.
I received the $2500 scholarship, but I’m most likely not going to one of the schools that offer a scholarship (aka probably a UC school). Does this mean I won’t receive any money? Will my name not be listed as a “national merit scholar” since I won’t actually be receiving the scholarship for media sites and stuff?
When is the deadline for changing my first choice school? I am trying to decide between list Baylor or Ole Miss (my state school) but I want to make sure that I have visited by before the deadline.
Does NMSC coordinate the awards, meaning you only get one option offered to you–NMSC award, corporate sponsored or college sponsored? If, so have all those offers probably been made as well or, if you didn’t get a NMSC award, is there still (real) hope for one of the others?
Sorry to ask this rather than look it up myself, but can someone please chime in on whether the college sponsored awards show up on your NM portal or in the mail, or on your college portal or - ?
@JBStillFlying Not sure how helpful this is, but my daughter’s NMF award showed up in her college portal and we received a letter from the school. She designated before Mar 1, since she’s firm in her decision (Alabama). She hasn’t gotten a letter or email from NMC, so she hasn’t even logged into her portal there.
Thanks @momof2TX that is helpful. My D also specified before 3/1 so should be in an early group if she gets anything. Her school reduced the amount this year and it’s not clear if it’s automatic. We’ve never heard of someone attending who was NOT awarded the college sponsored award but it might be a new ball game this year :-S
@JBStillFlying The waiting game is so stressful. Hopefully your D’s school will do scholarship offers soon. Good luck and best wishes that all comes out as you hope it will!
I accepted the scholarship offer a few days ago, but I realized I didn’t put the right major Is it possible to change it by emailing them or is it impossible once I submit it?
