@SmartJarhead my family income for 2017 was a little below 100k and I got a 30k grant, so I’m left with a 35k cost of attendance. I know how you feel, I was really excited about it but it probably won’t happen
@socal77 I was admitted to Columbia but there’s no way ill be able to attend due to COA, so I know exactly how you feel. I didn’t get a dime from Cal besides student loans which is a bummer since UC Santa Cruz had at least offered me a $5,400 grant.
@GoldenState1 did you apply to Columbia General Studies? I heard their financial aid is terrible
@socal77 That’s not too bad considering it’s only 2 years, what’s your major?
@SmartJarhead yeah I did because I’m a non-traditional student. The only way I would attend would be if I were offered the PALS scholarship which is basically a full ride for underrepresented, first-generation college students.
@SmartJarhead Neuroscience, but I’m pre-med so I’d rather not come out of undergrad with a lot of debt.
@GoldenState1 wishing you all the best! Let’s hope it all works out in the end
Hi all I am actually so nervous about Stanford, it is the school I really want to get in to.
I actually have applied to Columbia too and I am still waiting.
Applied: UCLA, USC, UCR, UCSD, UCSB, BU, Stanford, Columbia, UCI
Accepted: UCLA, USC, UCR, UCSD, UCSB, BU, UCI
Pending: Stanford, Columbia
CC GPA: 3.9
HS GPA: 4.3
Hi. Do you think Stanford is a TECH focus uni rather
than a politics centred place? Cuz I am majoring in literature and french in Australia, and want to major in English literature, politics and Arabic literature when I return to the states( hopefully I shall!!!) And I am soooo anxious waiting for admission result to be announced.
Appreciate your effort and energy in contributing to the discussion. All the best to you!
Thanks,
@dancingmed you got into great schools do not get to hung up on Stanford. What I would do to live in Cali and actually have a chance to get accepted to Berkley or UCLA as a transfer.
@mjr2013 as a current student, have you found it difficult to maintain a high GPA? How hard was the transition from a CC?
Thanks in advance for your help!
@thathabitat There is definitely a tech presence on campus, and most everyone would admit it. CS is the most common major on campus, and there is certainly an unintended pressure (by sheer quantity of people and conversations with friends) to take CS 106A (the intro programming course). It just comes with the terrain of Silicon Valley.
With that said, I’m a psych major, I’m not taking 106A, and I’m loving life. Every major is amazing. Literally. Every. Major.
@socal77 It completely depends on the person and the major. My GPA has increased since fall, and is now what I would consider high (a place I’m happy with), but yes I’ve worked hard for it, but yes I have a very good and active social life also.
I’m a “fuzzy”. I’ve heard it’s harder in “techy” majors, but it’s all subjective and what engages you.
Some universities are bad because they reject a person who had a 4.0 GPA with courses like linear algebra and differential equations finished already and a person who had a 4.0 GPA but literally didn’t take any high-level courses.
@mjr2013
I remember you mentioning somewhere about how Stanford doesn’t accept transfer applicants who are already at top schools like USC. I am currently at a top 15 school doing really well and hoping to transfer to Stanford. Are all of the admitted students really either from community college or veterans? I assume there has to be some exceptions such as students from schools like UChicago and Ivies. I just can’t imagine and understand why Stanford would pass out on qualified applicants from other top schools, too. Thank you.
@standreaming The logic is simple. If you are an excellent student and really love Stanford, why you didn’t try to apply to Stanford for the first year? Or you got a rejection and would like to try applying again? And of course, based on your logic, brown students can apply for harvard and yale and they are extremely qualified. But anyway, Stanford do love students from other top universities.
Stanford are really looking for the special cases, when it comes to transfer students.
I assume most of 4.0 applicants that apply are getting rejected, but a 3.7 with an interesting life story or a US veteran definitely have an edge. They’re looking for the versatility, which they might not look for in freshman applicants.
@standreaming I hope I didn’t say that! While the majority of accepted transfers are community college transfers or veterans, I know of at least two or three transfers from my year that were not either. Both came from larger east coast schools. I know of past transfers who have come from UC Berkeley and other larger state schools.
The Admissions Department would accept many more transfer students than they do, if they could. They are restricted by much higher than their office, to the office of the president and provost.
I applied just to see what could happen.
On my application in my second semester expected classes I put a class that I didn’t end up taking. Will that matter?
Also by the time the decisions come out I will have probably gotten a D in a class. On the slim chance I get in, I’m expecting they would rescind it, after seeing that, right? Other than that I’ve had all A’s during my time at community.
@ascendiox It would depend. It would not automatically be rescinded, but you would need to explain it, and it would not transfer for credit.
@mjr2013
Thank you so much for prompt reply. Your kind answer has taken a lot of anxiety and fear off my chest.
