@Trixiet I agree with @rah5720, GPAs are not standardized and can vary greatly across schools. Right or wrong, the easiest way to compare candidates apples-to-apples is via standardized tests.
@EvDrew They recalculate for the Honors/IB/AP points, but they cannot determine whether an A at High School A is equal to an A at High School B. Different schools use different grading scales, different teachers are more generous or stingy with grades, etc. That is the variation that I am referring to.
Oh I agree it’s a leveling way of viewing candidates @fl1234 and @rah5720, just pointing out it’s not the end all of indicators of college success. Seems like it should be a combination of the two in this regard. Not all colleges rely as heavily on it. If you look at any of the tools that gauge chances of admission at UF, for instance, GPA is much more of a determining factor (after reaching a minimum threshold of test score). UCF uses standardized test for merit scholarships. GPA can show a view of effort and rigor of schedule.
@Trixiet I do think merit scholarships should be based on gpa AND test scores. One or the other is not the right way to go but there should be minimum requirements for both. GPA should never outweigh test scores and test scores should never outweigh GPA. With test scores, the problem is that they don’t necessarily indicate how hard they try in school but with GPA, there is serious inflation issues. Many kids with high GPAs and low test scores are not products of what they call, “testing anxiety,” but they are products of serious GPA inflation. Overall, I do agree both should be used in the decision but for UCF, I do not think that is the case.
Does anyone know about how long it takes to hear back about scholarships? I applied November 17th and was accepted December 14th, which was a really long wait even though I’m auto-admitted through Top 10 Knights and they received my transcript the same day.
@ella582 it seems to be taking a lot longer this year for them to award in state scholarships. Daughter was accepted in September and just got notified of her scholarship last week.
@UCFBest2018 When I first sent in all of my stats I had a slightly lower GPA and SAT score all honors and dual enrollment courses, and way more hours and extracurricular but got deferred. I just retook the SAT and now I’m waiting for them to process my scores and give me a superscore.
@UCF0923 That’s really unfortunate, I wish you the best of luck and hopefully you get accepted. Though for myself, I really think my essay is what helped me the most.
I was accepted on October 2nd but I haven’t heard back about scholarships. When I emailed they told me I was still under consideration although according to this forum people who applied and got accepted later have already received scholarships. Can anyone chance me based on my stats on getting merit?

Date Applied: 9/28/17
Found out yet? Date: Deffered 11/1/17, accepted 11/9/17
Decision: Comitted to UCF!!
@omarrrr I can not believe that they would not offer you a scholarship with a 1520 SAT and your GPA. I also don’t have any idea why it would take them so long to offer one- maybe they are considering you for a higher level scholarship above the Pegasus ones??? I have no idea if they do that, but otherwise it doesn’t make sense to me why they would take so long to offer one. Good luck!
@omarrrr If you are a national merit semifinalist, you won’t get a scholarship notification until march-ish (once they receive the list of finalists). That’s the only reason I can think of for your delayed/lack of scholarship notification.
