2019-2020 USC Transfer

@potatotush All I can say is that it’s not uncommon. I’ve definitely seen people mention in the stats threads over the years that they were accepted without letters of recommendation. I asked my English professor and my anthro professor to write letters, but they both forgot to send them in. I was accepted

USC (College of Letters and Science)
CCC: SMC (community college)
Major: Political Science
GPA: 3.50 (hopefully a 3.67 after fall)
Major Gpa: 4.00

EC: Law pathway program, Scholars Program, Alpha Gamma Sigma, Young Democratic Socialists of America

Chance me?

You should try to achieve at least a 3.7+ GPA to have a good chance of acceptance. The higher, the better. This is not to say that if you are a little below, you will not get in. Some have gotten in with lower GPA’s.

Me! Hello, fellow prospective! I’m so nervous lol

Hey, everyone! This is my first time participating in one of these forums, though I’ve been eyeing several of them (specifically for USC) for awhile. Only now have I decided to join as it’s finally time for me to finish up my application. I’m superrr nervous so it’s nice to have an outlet and connect with other people who are in the same boat as me. I’m applying for the fall semester of 2019 as a Sophomore transfer. When I submit my application I’ll have a 3.87 GPA with 32 credit hours. I know that’s pretty low – like the bare minimum, but after the spring semester of this academic year I should have 49 credit hours with a GPA of 3.91. Last year, there was one semester where something pretty heavy happened to me and I had to kind of uproot and leave school for a few months, so there’s a couple of Ws and two Ds as well as an F on my transcript (yikes, I know, but it’s something I plan on talking about in my application because that whole experience actually turned out to be a pretty pivotal moment for me), but when I came back home, I retook the classes I got Ds and an F in and got As. Before that disastrous hiccup, however (which was my very first semester), I got all As and one B, beginning my academic career with a 3.69 (a decent start is always good, yeah?). So for the most part, there’s always been an upward trend in my grades, and had the terrible thing that happened to me not happened, I’d be applying with my 49 credit hours and 3.91 GPA. By the end of this academic year, I would have completed all my major preparatory coursework as well as the general education requirements outlined by the transfer guidelines. So basically – much like everyone else – I’m curious about my chances. I just want to manage my expectations and approach this whole situation realistically. I’m super happy that USC’s admission process has a very holistic approach, but I’m still freaking out a little.

I was a (successful) sophomore cc transfer 15 years ago with either a 3.6 or 3.7 GPA. I’m convinced I got in on the strength* of my SAT score (1470) – which USC still considers a factor in sophomore transfer decisions.

Point being: if you did well on standardized tests, you can make up some ground if your GPA is middling.

*A 1470 SAT was great back then but considering SC has become much more selective in the interim, it’d only fall in the 70th percentile of admits nowadays.

@uscgirl818 what is your major if you don’t mind me asking?

Hey guys! Looking to transfer as a sophomore into Dornsife as an International Relations major. I’m currently an International Business major.

High School GPA: 3.69
College Attending: Temple University
Projected First Semester College GPA: 3.83-3.88

College Courses: French 1001, Leadership & Organization Management, Legal Environment of Business, Macroeconomic Principles, and Stat 1001 (Looking to take more transferable ged eds next semester)

Am I a competitive applicant?
Best of luck!

@GotYa55 no problem! psychology, so i’m trying to get into dornsife

Hey everybody, I’m currently a first year at UCSB and I’m planning on transferring to USC after my first year here.
I was wondering if there is anyone else here transferring from a UC or another 4 year, or if there is anyone that successfully has and could offer some advice. I’ve already contacted an admissions counselor and am waiting for them to get back in their office to reply (the admissions counselor for my school is out of the office for about another week).

Currently I’m undeclared, but I know I want to do something within in the entertainment industry, which is one of the main reasons I want to go to USC, since the opportunities for internships, connections, and work experience are a lot greater in LA than here at SB. I’ve seen different things on how USC accepts transfer applicants (through 4 years or through CC), and I’d like to know how plausible it is to be able to transfer from a 4 year (I’ve heard a lot of people do, but want to get some more input), and the steps I should take to successfully transfer from a UC. Any help would be appreciated, and good luck to everyone else on here that will be transferring as well!

@maxyyjones My situation was slightly different. I attended UC Davis for a year before withdrawing to attend Riverside City College. My UCD GPA was around a 2.85 because of some family health issues, but I had a 4.0 my second year (at RCC). I was admitted to the Cinema and Media Studies program in the SCA presumably for my upward trend in grades and my strong writing sample. USC is incredibly flexible with transfers from 4-year schools, so I would just focus on finishing as many of the [GE Categories](https://dornsife.usc.edu/2015ge/2015ge-requirements/) as possible. I had 6/8 categories completed before I transferred which likely also helped me get in. Lemme know if you have more questions (might take me a bit to respond, but I will get to it for sure).

Thanks for the reply! That’s good to know that USC is flexible with transfers from 4 year schools. I may have some more questions so I’ll let you know if I do haha, thank you again!

Hello!
Is there anyway for me to personally message you? I have a lot of questions !

So I was wondering if SAT scores as well as ECs matter as a sophomore transfer

@uscgirl818 SAT scores aren’t even required if you’ll have 30 units completed by the time you transfer  EC’s are always nice, but I don’t believe they matter as much for transfer students as they do for HS students. Maybe in borderline cases, USC might admit one student with similar stats over another if they have interesting extracurriculars. Or if the EC is something truly extraordinary, they might take notice. If you don’t have time for EC’s, I wouldn’t dedicate time just to find one to put on your application - focus on your classes instead.

@CADREAMIN Does USC accept coursework taken at 4 year universities for transfer? I’m taking 2 classes at a 4 year while taking 8 classes at a community so I don’t want to worry them or be confusing

Yes - it is more about the specific class then where it came from. So whether it counts depends on what it is, but they certainly take classes from 4 years.

Should I take one of the Global Perspective GE’s next semester (specifically from Category G) if I’ve already filled up my 6 transferable GE’s? I’ve already fulfilled category H from AP credit. I don’t see any of the Global Perspective classes in the example 4-year plan for Marshall students though.

Does this mean they don’t look at Cat G and H as much for Marshall admissions?

I’m planning on applying to Marhsall and I’m registering for English, Bio, and Accounting next semester. I need another class to have full-time status and I’m not sure what to take.

I am currently a freshman at Pasadena City College with TTP, applying for Marshall. I am taking 17 units this semester (14 transferable). If there is anyone here who has transferred to USC after 1 year at CC, please let me know, because I have questions. I have already done 2 of my categories with AP credit (Calc AB and US History or Euro), but I still need to take a math class. Here is my current schedule.
English 1A (messed up by not sending Lang score)
College 1
Philosophy 1 (Category B)
Business 14A (Category F)
Sociology 1 (Category C)

English 1B is the writing requirement for USC, so will it affect my chances if I complete it in the winter intercession rather than now?
Also, one of the requirements for Marshall is Business 14B, which is equivalent to Math 118, but the transfer worksheet to Marshall says that a 4 or 5 on the AP Calc exam can get credit for Math 118. Do I need to send my AP Score to USC? Thanks!

Hey everyone,
So I’m a freshman at UCSB looking to transfer to USC as a sophomore. I’m currently taking 3 classes this quarter at UCSB (13 units), and my admissions counselor told me today that the amount of classes I’m taking this quarter puts me at a slight disadvantage since people at USC take 4 classes a semester, so I’ll be behind a little bit. I was wondering if anyone else has gone through the same thing here, how big of a disadvantage this is, and if there are any steps that can be taken to compensate for only taking 3 classes this quarter (like taking an extra class next quarter or a Summer school class at a community college). Thanks, any help would be greatly appreciated!
