2019 Tulane EA/SCEA Decision Thread

It just means you will get a decision no later than Monday. Could be a deferral, or could be an acceptance. Not too likely to be a denial, if the past is any indication.

@shell765‌

Yes, it is worth checking for a couple hours past that at least. Plus don’t forget they are on Central Time. I imagine they are working late this week.

With all due to @fallenchemist, who does an AMAZING job on this site, I do believe that the status change from awaiting to pending does indicate a deferral is forthcoming. If you check threads from prior years, everyone who got this message, unless I’m missing someone, got deferred. There’s a history of data that suggests this change in status means deferral. I just got the message as well, so I’m bummed … I really think its a deferral. And, yes, @fallenchemist, we will know by the 15th, but it is stressful nonetheless.

Has anyone gotten the change in status from “…complete and awaiting review” to “Your decision is pending review We will try to get you a decision in just a few weeks, but you will receive an update on your admission status by December 15th at the latest?” and been admitted??? (that’s a copy & paste of the status message on Gibson … its not even a complete sentence … )

That’s OK, @Homer101. You are right that most are deferrals, possibly even the significant majority. But of course, as was discussed in other posts, we know that is going to be the case since Tulane accepts only around 27% overall, not to mention that deferrals are skewed to the end of this process for reasons already discussed. So when you look back, I am sure it does seem that all the people getting that message get deferred. You will just have to take my word for it that some do still get accepted. But to be sure, I am not trying to mislead anyone by denying that most, at this point, will probably get deferred.

My daughter’s status just went to Pending Review today and I have been convinced for awhile that she was going to be deferred. She has high stats, but I think didn’t show enough interest, but I suppose she certainly could have had other problems with her application that we don’t know about.

ETA: Best of luck to you all!

@fallenchemist‌ That’s a little disheartening, but I won’t give up hope until Monday. I felt very confident with my stats initially, now I keep going through my application in my mind to think of what could have gone wrong. Regardless, thank you for all you do in helping de-mystify the Tulane admissions process.

FYI - My stats are UW 4.0, W 4.51 ACT 32, AP and Dual Enrollment, graduating from high school a year early, varsity sports, lots of EC’s, and completed the “Why Tulane” essay.

what if mine still says your application is complete and awaiting review. I already called and they said I would hear by Monday.

@gidgett‌

Wow, what a great record! You will be a fantastic addition to any school.

Not to speak for Tulane admissions, of course, but you do seem like the type of student that is probably shooting for several schools that are even more competitive than Tulane. If Tulane does defer you, and if you are truly interested in attending, you have to make it your job to convince admissions that Tulane is not just a “safety” for you. That would just be the reality, fair or not. But hopefully by Monday it will be a moot point.

@gidgett Your stats look good to me. IF you get a deferral I would think it is because you have not shown enough interest. Did you apply ED to another school? Sometimes the deferral is caused by them not wanting to accept someone who is committed to a different school (if they are accepted ED).

@ging23‌

Then you will hear by Monday, as has been stated 100 times on here. It means nothing else.

@fallenchemist‌ Kind words, thank you! Tulane is my first choice, and not just because it was the furthest school my parents would allow me to apply because of my age. :wink: If I am deferred, I will do as you suggested!

@fallenchemist‌ if my Gibson account hasn’t changed, and still says “Complete and awaiting review” is it still likely that I’ll get deferred? Or does that really just mean that my app hasn’t been reviewed yet. Any idea?

Nope. I still think people are reading too much into these messages. It just means you will have a decision by Monday.

Thanks @fallenchemist for putting up with all of us. I will be really disappointed if I am deferred because Tulane is my #1 choice by a long shot. After doing three stints of service work in NOLA and visiting Tulane on several occasions, I made it clear in my Why Tulane essay that my interest was sincere. I attended the local Tulane presentation in Seattle and wrote my admissions counselor several times (and received very nice, encouraging notes back). I thought my stats were competitive – 3.9 UW GPA (4.6 W), 2250 SAT, varsity soccer, leadership, 400+ community service hours, an internship in political consulting, 2 part-time jobs, and student government. You’re right, though, what will be will be … and life is full of disappointments. This isn’t my first and won’t be my last. Thanks again for all your wisdom and input.

@Homer101‌ Well said :slight_smile: At this point, I’m just wishing good luck to us all!

Just curious on what you’d think will happen for me. I have 4.0 gpa, 35 ACT, captain of my schools dance team, student council president, participate in plenty other extracurriculars and volunteering yet my gibson account says pending review.

You will definately be accepted, biomed.

However, did you complete the “optional” essay and/or did you demonstrate interest through other means? Tulane may assume you’re using them as a safety if you didn’t demonstrate interest.

Hey guys! I was accepted 6 days ago (on the portal) and I was wondering how long it usually takes to receive the acceptance letter and info in the mail? Many thanks.

Trying my best to follow @fallenchemist‌ 's advice and BREATHE! But it’s a little tough. Up until about after school I had the beloved “awaiting review” page and around 4 it switched to the dreadful “decision pending review” Not many students from my school applied to Tulane early action this year, but one of my closet friends got in but he did also apply weeks before(I was a Nov. 15ther) but I feel like I have a strong application. One thing to consider though, maybe I al reading too much into this but does Tulane have committee voting during the early application stage. Where about 6 counselors and the Dean of Admissions sit down and go through the “on the fence apps” and decide there? And decide to admit, defer, or reject there? Hopefully everyone knows what I am alluding to. I am trying to keep faith and hoping that my screen pattern just breaks the decision tradition and I get accepted through the grace of God! Hang in there “decision pending” peeps! There’s hope for us, just try and relax and if we get deferred take it as an awesome opportunity to work on our app, add some extra passion to our application and get back out on the playing field for RD! Hoping that isn’t necessary though and WE ALL GET IN! Keep faith guys!

@biomed1‌ @homer101 @gidgitt My status changed to “pending review” over a week ago, and I got my deferral letter a few days ago. I had similar stats to you all, applied SCEA, toured, wrote the Why Tulane essay (and included that it was my first choice in the essay.) Obviously I can’t speak for everyone who’s gotten the “pending review” status, but it was a deferral for me.
