Homer – I cant imagine it would be otherwise as it causes you to instantly reconsider all the paradigms you are operating under. Its not fun, but it causes you to dig deep down and really ask yourself the important questions about what you want to do and what you are willing to do to achieve that. That’s exactly what happened with our daughter and it ultimately was a very positive experience but I’m sure it doesn’t feel that way right now.

I can tell just from many of your comments that you are very capable of digging deep down and doing that!

BTW, I do recall while looking through last year’s acceptance thread that some deferred candidates ended up getting merit money, so you shouldn’t by any means assume that is out of the question either. I’m sure FC can speak more to this point.

Mot much more I can add to that, @RMKA2013. You are exactly right. I have to admit that with all the interest @Homer101 said he showed, I am surprised by his deferral, but as I always say we cannot see the entirety of the application. In any case Homer, I strongly encourage you to keep communicating with Tulane and make sure they know you are sincerely interested. After all, as RMKA implies, the alternative is to give up. You don’t want to do that.

Defered after my status changed to “pending” on Friday.
30 ACT, 3.83 UW, wrote why tulane.
Bike racing is my main EC with national results which thus got me selected to race at Worlds 2014
Community service at a local nonprofit bike shop
Tulane is my first choice and I’m pretty upset.
Sorry if this was answered before, but should I still submit DHS? I’ve been working on it for the past few months
I also decided to graduate early for my own reasons and talked to the admissions rep for Wisconsin. He said if anything, it would have a positive effect but I’m wondering if it had anything to do with the deferral

I can say with utmost confidence that your graduating early had no negative effect on your application. While it isn’t common, it isn’t exactly rare either.

I cannot say, of course, why you were deferred. And in general being deferred should not be a deterrent to someone applying for the DHS or PTA if they have the stats. While I have a general policy of never talking anyone out of applying, I will point out to you that the stats Tulane has used as a guideline for applicants to be in the running for these awards is 33+ ACT or 2250+ SAT, top 5% of your class type GPA, and lots of challenging courses (AP and IB for most people). Anything well short of those types of stats has very little chance of getting these scholarships. So use your own judgement, but I thought you should know the facts. http://tulane.edu/financialaid/grants/dhs.cfm

Thank you so much @fallenchemist I figure I may as well try since I really do want to go there! I did have connections with my brother attending as well as my dad being involved with Tulane so I thought that would help a tiny bit but ahhh we’ll see I suppose!

@RMKA2013 @fallenchemist Thank you both so much for your kind and encouraging comments. I’ll take your advice and push forward. Thanks @RMKA2013 for sharing your daughter’s experience. It really does help to hear that. And @fallenchemist I will definitely do some soul searching and keep expressing my sincere interest in Tulane. Maybe they didn’t believe me when I said it was my #1 choice. I’m from Seattle and have done a bunch of service work in NOLA for the last three years. I discovered Tulane through that … and it’s been at the top of my list since my first visit. There’s just something about the spirit of the city and school that grabbed my heart. So, this one hurts. I’ve got to believe the right thing will happen in the end. Thanks again for your support. Onward:)

@RMKA2013 @fallenchemist One more question for you both … do you have any data on the odds of a deferred applicant ultimately getting admitted?

Ahhhh defered I thought my stats were competitive, 32 ACT, 3.82 GPA, founder and leader of several clubs but still…, I guess I didn’t show enough interest. And yea, I did have the pending review before being defered. Right now I feel so worried about my other ED school vanderbilt, because I got defered here, ugh

Got deferred today. SAT 2110 (CR750/w730/m630). Ascending grades with 6 advanced courses (like AP) straight a’s jr and senior year. Wrote a why tulane essay, but it wasn’t very good. I’m still very interested in Tulane. Do you thing I still have a shot?

I don’t even know what is going on. I thought that I would be a shoe-in for Tulane but I was deferred! I’m super upset because Tulane is my first choice. I wrote the “Why Tulane prompt.” It could have been a little stronger but it showed how interested I was.

I go to one of the top public high schools in California.

I applied to the BME major.

3.9 UW GPA
32 ACT (33E, 30M, 34R, 31S)
Figure skating is my main EC, I coach in addition to skating
I work 15 hours per week
Over the past two summers I have done summer programs at the Stanford school of medicine department of clinical anatomy.
Community service: I teach kids with disabilities how to skate.
I am in a middle college program (where I can take 11 units of college credit every quarter in addition to my high school classes).
I also mailed in teacher recs
Hook? I’m asexual. I talked my experiences and struggles in my personal statement. My teachers who read it said it was powerful without being a sob story.

And @fallenchemist (so sorry to make you answer the same questions over and over) Do you think that I should still submit my application for Dean’s honor and Paul Tulane? In addition, what can I do to show interest?

Thanks so much and good luck to everyone else who was deferred! Congrats to everyone who got in!

Homer – I defer entirely to FC on all the statistical stuff. I do recall seeing the deferred blog that FC refers to is that all deferred applicants are essentially compared against the RD applicant pool, so it sounds like something of a fresh start, so that has to be encouraging. Also, take some of the spirit you have shown in your posts and write a sincere letter and better yet, if the opportunity presents itself for you to be in New Orleans, ask for a meeting with your admissions counselor and sell yourself! Tell them why they are nuts for not admitting you (don’t take that too literally … smile)!

That applies to everyone here that was deferred that really wants to attend. Its laid out really well in the blog. Selling yourself to others is one of the most important things you need to do as a adult and this is most certainly an important opportunity to do that. I cant imagine anything that would make an admissions counselor happier than a generally qualified candidate telling them why they want to attend Tulane with sincere reasons why … from the heart. If you sit around and wait, you do that at your own peril.

Yes, with your stats I would still shoot for the DHS and PTA. You are on the edge with that ACT score, but certainly I think you would have a shot with a strong project/essays.

Well, there are two ways to look at it. Since Tulane has an overall admit rate of about 27%, and I would have to think the EA rate is higher than than the RD rate, the odds are significantly less than 50-50. So from a mathematical point of view the odds are not so great. But of course it isn’t random, you have great stats, fantastic enthusiasm, and a good attitude. I think as long as you follow the steps Jeff outlines, your chances are very strong. I always, always, always have to throw in the caveat that I cannot see your entire application and record, so that is based only on what you have related and I read into your posts. But if those are representative, I feel very good about your chances. Bottom line, convince them that if they accept you, you would send in your deposit the next day, or something to that effect.

Of course you do! You have the stats, at least. Per the advice to others, if Tulane is really high on your list, then make them believe that and keep trying.

Something to consider, several of you have noted that you applied ED to other schools or that Tulane was your “safety”. That could be a factor in the deferral. Tulane is going to wait to see if you follow through with the RD process or if you end up going to a school you have higher ranked. I noticed the same thing happen last year when my son applied. He was accepted EA and many applicants with better stats then he had were deferred. But for him Tulane was always #1. No other school was even close on his interest list. In fact, he only applied to two other schools (both safety schools) and once he was accepted to Tulane didn’t send in any other applications.

Just curious if anyone is left on this thread with “your file is complete and awaiting review?” It seems as though a lot of deferrals came out over the past day or so.

To people that have been accepted, I’m assuming you all received the email I got today from tulane congratulating you on the acceptance. If you got merit aid, would that email have mentioned it? I still have not received the letter in the mail which I know is how most people found out about aid but I was wondering if they discussed it in anyone’s acceptance email as well? I’m sure the letter should be coming any day but I just thought I’d ask.
