Congratulations @kgamon‌ ! when did you hear? Planning on enrolling?

Having experienced the admissions process last year with my D I can say that one of the most nerve racking parts of the process is the need to continually log into Gibson to find results, without any heads up to do so. A simple email to say “Check Gibson” so you would know that an update has been posted would be a welcome change.

I was accepted a few weeks ago EA with the Presidential Scholarship and Honors (SAT 2280, UW GPA 4.0). I was ecstatic! Still waiting to hear back from the rest of my schools of course, but it is such a relief to know that I have been accepted (and will be able to now comfortably afford) an amazing school in an amazing location. Finishing up the final touches on my DHS and PT scholarships today as well.

Is it impossible to get merit money with a low SAT/ACT score? My D has a 4.0 GPA, great EC’s, ltrs of rec, sports, work, leadership, community service etc etc etc. But it looks to me like the kids with the scholarship money are the kids with high standardize test scores. Some kids have high standardize test scores and low GPA’s but still get merit. Why doesn’t it seem to work both ways?. With the exception of one or two thats how it appears. Am I correct to assume this? Is it insane to go to admissions and ask them to reconsider?

Answered “Why Tulane” essay

@Dungareedoll I guess it depends on what you mean by “low SAT/ACT score.” My S got the Academic Achievement award ($20,000) and his SAT’s were only 2000 (710 CR/650 Math) superscored.

ea- deferred

great ec’s
great essays
answered “why tulane”
awesome rec letters

i talked to some people about the fact that overqualified students have been getting deferred from Tulane. I found out that Tulane has a tendency to defer people who aren’t likely to go there- its rather an ivy leaguer’s backup school. I guess at Tulane demonstrated interest plays a key role.

good luck to everyone in the regular decision round

Opps! My bad I didn’t include the scores. D got a 28 on the ACT. She also got an 1800 on the SAT but I only sent the one ACT score because it was worth slightly more than the SAT.

Contd…just to be clear. She took the SAT three times. Each time got the same basic score, give or take ten points in either direction. So superscored it was an 1800 but there was little difference between each test. Then she too the ACT in Sept. and recd straight 28’s, so that was the only score reported.

ea deferred

She is a very good student. At home she would get 700’s in the math and high 600’s in the reading/writing, but on the day of the tests she was very anxious. In the meantime, she has been all honors since 8th grade and started AP’s in 9th. Will graduate with 8 AP’s and a 4.0 GPA from a large competitive high school. So for five years she has worked really hard to be a good student. She is very dedicated and hardworking, but these tests did her in and consequently it appears she lost out on a possible scholarship.

@Dungareedoll‌ Is Tulane her top choice? Have you considered waiting it out to see if any of her other top schools would be willing to give her a more competitive scholarship? What is she planning to major in? Her career path will mean a lot when considering her student loan tolerance.

thanks @fallenchemist !!

I was Deferred EA. I have to admit, I am a little shocked honestly, but judging by other’s, it sounds like a lot of people were. I did show demonstrated interest at every Tulane conference that came to town (one reception, one college fair). Here are my stats.

Deferred EA with 3.87 UW GPA and 32 ACT. Friend got in EA with a 3.3 and a 23…I honestly do not know what this school wants. I showed LITERALLY as much interest in Tulane as possible: I visited campus, I mentioned specific details about what I loved about tulane in my “Why Tulane” essay. I emailed my representative repeatedly, not bugging or spamming him, but often enough. I am extremely discouraged right now as Tulane was one of my better safeties. While I am happy for those who got in, I cannot help but feel slapped in the face, almost like I am being punished for trying so hard in school. Now I am extremely worried about my other colleges, whether I will be met with similar cold reception despite doing everything on my part to show my interest:

I am also Asian (Indian) if that makes any difference, as apparently there are not many asians at Tulane…
