*** 2020-2021 Medical Applicants and Their Parents

Congrats! Acceptances always help one breathe easier.

Best wishes to those still awaiting them… It’s a tough year to be trying for a slot. Many capable students will be left out.

Congrats to @UMD2021_2023’s daughter and family!

Congrats to @srk2017’s son on acceptance to Hopkins or NYU or Stanford! Very prestigious schools.

My daughter is applying this year for MD/PhD. She has received a few MSTP acceptances.

Anyone have advice on how these young adults can get a good feel/vibe for schools across the country that they won’t have the opportunity to visit? It sounds like Second Looks will be virtual this round just like the interviews.

Congratulations @mamabear16.

She has been admitted to both MD and PhD correct?

It is a very long commitment (8 or more years). So it is important to pick a location where she is planning to spend so many years of her young life. If she is admitted to Houston, Dallas or Austin, I can tell you they are great cities to live in. I have lived in Houston for 30 years as an immigrant and have never felt out of place. Texas is a great state to live in!

I have nephews and nieces going to school in Philadelphia and they are quite happy living there.

@MamaBear16 Congratulations!

It’s the same problem for my guy wondering how to rank residencies he likes post interview. There’s no way to judge the areas according to his preferences. There’s only so much one can see online.

Thank you. I knew you can figure out which school

Ivies dont come out until February/March.

I am guessing Stanford and Hopkins would be fullfare for you…

Yes, given we didn’t pay for UG we are fine with that.

Yes, all MSTPs combine both the MD and the PhD degrees.
Thank you for your offer to help with cities, but she didn’t apply to any of the Texas schools.

@MamaBear16 Is this in East coast ?

@mamabear16 - you can PM @WayOutWestMom or @thumper1 and/or me about the locations under consideration and may be we can try to connect you with people familiar with locations under consideration. Since MSTP is considered somewhat cost neutral, I would assume the consideration should be primarily based on school and city.

DS got two more acceptances, home school and another home state school.

Congratulations @srk2017

Very low key announcements but both very tough to get into schools.

Should be very proud!

@srk2017 Congratulations!! Sounds like your DS will have quite a few to choose from :slightly_smiling_face:

Great way to start off our new year, yesterday daughter got her 2nd acceptance to an OOS MD/MPH program. Has her big interview next week with our in state school for their MD/MPH program. She’s pretty nervous about it, but is glad to have 2 acceptances under her belt going into the interview.

Congrats and GL with her in state interview. I don’t think my son will do anymore interviews.

Congratulations on the 2nd acceptance @UMD2021_2023!

Is the interview at a different state school than the one she already received admission?

MPH is kind of a freebie. Anyone can get in including those who dont receive an MD admission…

My daughter is doing MPH but she didnt apply for it as part of the original application.

Thanks! I’m sure your son is glad to be done with this part of the process and can hopefully relax and enjoy the rest of his time at Vandy :slightly_smiling_face: Will be interested to hear where he finally decides to go to med school and how he came to that decision. GL to him!

Thanks!

She has only been accepted to 2 OOS schools. We only have 1 in state public school which she is interviewing at next week. Our 1 private in state medical school is very competitive and she didn’t feel like she had the stats to get into it so she didn’t apply. Our instate public school is pretty competitive too, but since they usually admit up to 70% from in state she felt she had a better chance there.

Thanks for the advice on the MPH part. That’s really good to know. I think when she applied to med schools she didn’t know how hard or easy it would be to get into the MPH part after medical school had started and she knows that she really wants to do the MPH part too so she decided to apply for the joint degree when she could.
